2025 OHSAA Tournament: Division VI State Semifinal - #1 Hiland (Berlin) vs #4 Fairview (Sherwood)
AKRON - A three-peat is still alive for Hiland - but it was far from easy.
The top-ranked team in the state outlasted Fairview 4-2 in the Division VI semifinals on Saturday morning at Thurman Munson Stadium to advance to the finals on Sunday.
Caden Coblentz gave up five hits and five walks in six innings, getting out of numerous jams, and the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and held on for their 30th win in 31 games.
No inning was bigger for the Hiland senior right-hander than the fifth when the Apaches loaded the bases with two away. But a ground out ended the threat and the Malone commit survived a two-on and two-out situation in the sixth.
Hiland scored one in the first when Colin Coblentz singled in Caden and, after Fairview scored one in the top of the third on a Cole Mack RBI single, went back on top in the bottom of the frame on a Grady Monigold grounder to score Mike Miller who singled and stole second.
An error led to a two-run fifth and a Colin Coblentz run-scoring triple and another Monigold RBI grounder resulted in two critical runs for Hiland in the fifth.
Fairview, which had the leadoff hitter on four times and left 10 runners on base in the game, plated one in the seventh on a Zane Timbrook two-out triple and RBI single by Drayden Grinnell-Dennis. But with the potential tying run at bat, Miller, who came on in relief to start the inning, induced a pop out.
Anthony Singer and Logan Olinger had two singles apiece for the fourth-ranked Apaches, playing in the state tournament for the first time in school history.
Hiland will now play the winner of Elmwood and Lake Center Christian in the D-VI championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Canal Park.
HOT TAKES
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Six innings of one-run baseball by Coblentz was the difference for Hiland. The senior right-hander fanned nine against a Fairview squad that had scored double-figure runs on 10 occasions this season. Of his 119 pitches, 75 went for strikes.
SHINES IN DEFEAT: Strong defense helped keep the Apaches in the game. In the fourth with two on and one out, left fielder Shady Fritch made a nice sliding catch on Kaden Kandel and a batter later center fielder Gavin Garza had a running grab on a shot by Caden Coblentz to get out of the inning. In the fifth, Fairview shortstop Olinger took a hit away from Monigold on his RBI ground out to help limit the damage in the frame.
WHAT’S NEXT?: It was a record-setting season for the Apaches with a lot of promise for the future. Only three seniors were in a starting lineup that featured two freshmen, Fritch and Singer, and a pair of sophomores. Five hitters that averaged .350 or better return along with three of the top four hurlers in Saturday’s starter Elijah Arend and reliever Jonah Shinger along with Singer.
