New England Diamond Notes: May 19-25

Tyler Bonelli pitched twice during the week and gave up just one run in each outing.

The 229th-ranked junior in New England fanned six in five innings against North Branford on Monday and came back on Saturday to throw a one-hitter in a 2-0 conference quarterfinal win over Morgan, striking out four in six frames.

The 18th-ranked 2026 third baseman in New England and No. 7 in Connecticut also went 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs against North Branford while producing the game-winning two-run double against Morgan during a 3-4 day at the dish. 

So who else had big weeks? Read on… 

TWO-WAY STANDOUTS

Two home runs, a double and seven RBIs is just  part of what James Rabuse did this week for Wahcouch Regional.

The fourth-ranked junior right-handed pitcher in New England, who went 5-11 batting for the week, also struck out 12 and gave up three hits and two earned runs in 5.2 innings. The Northeastern commit is 3-3 overall with 83 Ks in 36.1 innings and a 2.30 ERA.

At the plate, Rabuse is carrying a .491 average with six homers, six doubles, two triples, 28 RBIs, 20 runs and seven steals.

There were a couple others that had big weeks reported on the mound and at the plate…

- Lucas Deshefy threw 3.1 innings of one-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts and no walks on Monday and came back on Saturday to pick up a win for Guilford, giving up two hits and one run with one K in three innings while not walking a batter. The 13th-rated senior RHP in Connecticut also had two strong games at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and two runs on Tuesday and coming back to go 2-3 with 2 runs on Saturday.

- A 5-5 game highlighted a big week for Plymouth Regional left-handed hitting shortstop Luke Diamond, who finished 9-12 with the bat in three games. The senior, who is now hitting .395 with a .458 OBP and 12 runs scored, also struck out nine in 8.1 innings, giving up three hits, one walk and one earned run.

STRONG PITCHING

Riley O’Brien retired 20 batters on strikes in nine innings for Champlain Valley Union this week, allowing five hits and four walks while picking up his first win of the season.

The senior right-handed pitcher has thrown 27.1 innings and given up 15 hits and 18 free passes while striking out 49 with a 1.793 ERA.

One more good pitching performance was reported…

- Tyler Easterbrook was the winning pitcher against McMahon in the FCIAC quarterfinals, tossing a two-hitter and surrendering one earned run with eight strikeouts for Darien High School. The 82nd-ranked junior right-handed pitcher in New England is 2-1 on the season with a 37-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Easterbrook has a 1.42 ERA while holding the opposition to a .190 batting average.

SOPHOMORE STANDOUTS

The No. 4 2027 outfielder in New England is living up to the ranking.

Scituate High School’s Grayson Foley hit two home runs this week, including a grand slam, going 4-8 with five RBIs, five runs, five walks and two stolen bases.

The 44th-rated sophomore in New England has a .348 batting average and 1.067 OPS, scoring 18 runs on the season with 15 walks and nine steals. 

There were other 10th-graders that had big weeks…

- Kaiden McCarthy is a regular in the Diamond Notes and this week is no exception. The Vermont Academy sophomore threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk to beat Kimball Union 10-0 for the Lakes Region championship. For the year, the No. 1 2027 in New England and fifth-ranked sophomore RHPin the nation is 5-0 with 55 Ks in 29 innings, allowing just one earned run, seven hits and five walks. Earlier in the week McCarthy had a triple and two RBIs against St. Paul.

- Ryan Hollis threw a no-hitter at Stratford while going 2-2 at the plate with three RBIs for East Catholic. The sophomore RHP/SS also struck out six while producing three hits in a win over East Hartford and is now 6-0 on the year with a .390 batting average.

- A four-game week featured nine RBIs and a pair of home runs from Kyle Soule. The second-ranked sophomore shortstop in New England went 7-14 with two runs and now has 20 RBIs, 11 runs, three home runs and a .385 batting mark in 11 games played for Greely.

- A four-hitter with 11 Ks and one walk boosted Dylan Chamberland to 2-0 on the year for Newington. The 24th-rated sophomore right-handed pitcher in New England did not give up an earned run and now has a 1.45 ERA on the year with a 34-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 24 innings.

- Nolan Sullivan went 8-12 with a pair of doubles and a walk for Nashua North, scoring twice and driving in three. The No. 2 sophomore third baseman in New Hampshire also fanned 13 in 6.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.

- Frank Carrasquillo recorded eight strikeouts in a five-inning two-hit win over Windham, walking one. The sophomore pitches and plays right field for Timberlane.

HOT STICKS

Tommy O’Connell continues to produce big numbers at the plate for Hopkins.

The junior right fielder went 4-9 with two doubles and a triple, driving in six, walking once, scoring one run and stealing a base.

On the season, O’Connell now has 10 extra-base hits including nine doubles while driving in 29, scoring 19 and walking nine times. He has a .355 batting average, .419 OBP and .500 slugging percentage. 

There were other standouts with the bat worth mentioning…

- Rocco DeMaio III had a .500 week at the plate with four hits in eight ABs to go along with four walks for Hopkins. The 11th-rated junior shortstop in New England had a double, three singles, scored five runs and swiped four bases. DeMaio, who has turned 10 double plays at SS, has scored 29 runs on the season with 26 walks, 17 RBIs and six two-base hits.

- Ryan Wood had six hits and drove in six during the week for Champlain Valley Union. The junior infielder had two triples and a double, scored three runs, walked once and stole a base in 14 plate appearances and is now hitting .404 on the season with 15 RBIs.

- An 8-13 week for Cole Sidwell helped Franklin win three of four games. The senior center fielder had a double and four walks with five runs scored and five RBIs while posting a .706 OBP.

YOUTH SHINES

Sophomore right-hander Gus Witt now has six wins on the season for Hopkins.

In 46.2 innings on the season, Witt has struck out 56 and walked 14 with a 1.238 WHIP.

This past week the 10th-grader surrendered one earned run in seven innings, striking out seven and giving up three hits and two walks.

There were two other sophomores that came up with strong performances reported this week…

- Witt’s teammate Tommy Corwin shut out Winchendon on a four-hitter, fanning four and walking four in seven innings to improve his season ERA to 2.47 in 17 frames. A RHP/1B, Corwin also scored a pair of runs and drove in one going 3-10 at the plate.

- Max Boehm fired a three-hit shutout at Natick, striking out six and walking one for Wellesley. Boehm is the 11th-ranked sophomore right-handed pitcher in New England and No. 6 in Massachusetts.
