At The Yard Podcast: New Episode LIVE now!

This past Tuesday, July 1st, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the Bay Area Summer ID at Islanders Field in Lathrop, CA. This was an open event for high school classes (2026-29), and gave our staff an ample look at the development of some of the top talent in the area and introduced our staff to new names to know after their performances.

20 players made their way to Islanders Field this past week and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners (VALD, Blast Motion, and TrackMan) as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball California staff.

Today, we will be looking at some of the top performers from the event and for more information including stats from the event, click here.

Bay Area Summer ID: Top Performers

Walter Unruh OF / RHP / Kingsburg, CA / 2028

Unruh is a pretty physical looking freshman and one of the top ranked players in the 2028 class, standing at 6’2” 181.9 lbs, his future is going to be bright. Unurh was a freshman on varsity this season at San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno, CA. Aside from the size, Unruh ran an event best 6.96 second sixty-yard dash, with a max running speed of 19.7 mph, he also had a max jump height of 22.8 inches. Unruh has a lot of upside on the offensive side, his large frame gives him some juice, does a good job of using his lower half when he hits. Unruh had a max EV of 94.1 mph and an average of 87.1 mph during the hitting portion of the workout. With only being a freshman going into his sophomore year, I think Unruh will be a name you’ll be hearing about in the Central Valley, there is just something different in that Valley water down there. Centerfield and right field are where I see him being able to stick around, the outfield arm strength will come too, his max velocity in the defensive workout was 81 mph, where his ball showed it had some carry and kept the throws low. Unruh isn’t done growing either, there is still some more room for growth, excited to follow him over the summer/fall.

Jacoby Pitnikoff C / 2B / Orangevale, CA / 2027

Pitnikoff was one of the three catchers who attended the event, tied with the best pop time of the day with a 2.11 sec and a max velocity of 73 mph. There is some arm strength behind the dish along with quick transfers, he uses the ground well when throwing down to second, mixing in a lot of smooth long hops. His throws to third were accurate and in the tag zone. Pitnikoff took some groundballs in the infield and profiles more of a second baseman, but the bat is something I took some notice of. If he can potentially learn some more infield spots I think his bat will keep him in the lineup. Pitnikoff ran a 7.30 60-yard dash which has the potential to get lowered in the future, he's a pretty athletic/strong kid. During BP, I noticed he did a really good job of using the middle/opp approach, most of his juice was towards the middle of the field. There were even some misses to the oppo gap where he showed some legit backspin. Pitnikoff had a max EV of 94.9 mph with an average EV of 87.7 mph, and a max distance of 346 feet. Pitnikoff attends Bella Vista High School where he’s got a shot to be one of their impact players next season.

Cooper Carleton LHP / Rocklin, CA / 2027

Carleton is coming back off an injury over a year ago, so with having to sit out since last summer, it was refreshing to be able to see him throw again. Carleton is a sleeper in the area and not many people know about him yet. He’s got a lot to offer considering he’s 6’1” and 150 lbs, with the added strength in the future, Carleton has got a shot to be a really talented arm in the 2027 class. Carleton stepped on the mound with a three pitch mix, starting with his fastball, it was coming out of the hand pretty heavy. His fastball was sitting between 85-86 mph while topping out at 87 mph. Carleton has a ton of armside run on his heater making it look a lot more firm than it is, mix that with a 97% spin efficiency (2,009 rpm on FB) there's definitely something there. Also, Carleton has an average Horizontal Movement of -16.7 in with a max of -20 inches, potentially a left handed hitter's nightmare. The curveball plays well off of the FB, with a max spin rate of nearly 2700 rpm, and an average of 2375 rpm. I like how he can stay in the zone when throwing the off speed. Carelton paired those with a changeup which had some finesse, the velo was 73-75 mph while having a max spin rate of 1823. Carleton earned his spot as a PO on team NorCal for the Future Games.

Devon Richardson 1B / 3B / Manteca, CA / 2027

Richardson came out of Manteca High School and held it down at first base, one of the more physical guys of the group, standing at 6’1” 222.9 lbs, along with a 7.73 60-yard dash. With being a bigger guy he was still able to move around the infield efficiently at first base. Richardson had a max infield velocity of 77 mph, the arm is good enough to get it across the diamond with ease. Richardson can mash, he was consistently finding the barrel in his BP rounds, he had an event best 101.1 mph EV and had an average EV of 94 mph, which was showing he has a feel for the hitting zone and his own swing. He has the ability to show the pullside pop as well as hit it to the middle of the field. Richardson will be going into his senior year and will try to find a spot to contribute.

Nicholas Torres OF / 3B / Mountain House, CA / 2026

Torres was the only switch hitter of the event, coming from Mountain House High School, the outfielder displayed some promising potential all over the field. Standing at 5’11” 216.3 lbs, another kid who’s got some good size. Torres ran a 7.73 60-yard dash with a max run speed of 17.6 mph. Transitioning to the outfield part of the workout, Torres has an outfield velocity of 80 mph, if he wants to stay in RF/CF he will need to get his arm stronger, but the bat is what is really impressive. Naturally, Torres is a left handed hitter, the right side is not bad but it's more of a base hit type of approach. On the left side, Torres can really let it rip, he had multiple home runs over the right field fence, having a max EV of 97.6 mph and a max distance of 363 ft. The bat is where I see Torres making a threat, I can also see him potentially transitioning to first base and focusing more on the left side, because there is some serious bat speed.
