At The Yard Podcast: New Episode LIVE now!

Malibu, Calif. - On Sunday, June 1st, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the ProCase West on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.. This was an invite-only event for the high school classses of 2026 and 2027 from the States of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. Players in attendance are amongst some of the top ranked players in their individual states with the group from Southern California squaring off against a team comprised of Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. Players in attendance were showcasing their skills for the MLB scouts in attendance, the staffs of each Prep Baseball state represented and Prep Baseball Vice President of Scouting Shooter Hunt for potential invite to the Prep Baseball All American Game to be hosted in Miami in September of 2025.

A talented group of position, pitchers and two-way players made their way out to Pepperdine and participated both in a showcase-style workout and a simulated game play event over the course of the day. Position players and two-way players started their day with electronic height, weight and grip testing before beginning their athletic testing by running a 60-yard dash on our laser timing system from VALD (providing 10 yard, 30 yard and 60 yard splits with a max run speed). From there the group underwent a defensive evaluation with Outfielders making multiple throws to home plate on video with their arm strength being recorded via a Stalker radar gun. Next up the Infielders undewent defensive evaulations with video and arm strength readings with 3Bs working out at their spot, middle infielders all working out at SS and 1Bs from 1B. Catchers underwent a defensive workout by making multiple throws to 2B with pop times and arm strength readings with video. During the batting practice portion of the day all hitters in attendance had their swing metrics gathered via Blast Motion technologies to provide valuable information on their swing, batted ball data was provided from Trackman technologies and all swings are recorded via video. The pitchers or two-way players in attendance each would face five live hitters during the simulated game portion of the day with all pitches being tracked via Trackman technologies and video recorded of their deliveries and pitch shapes.

On a day full of talented players from all over Southern California coming together to form Team California at this event this group of players put on strong performances.

Note: A player's inclusion here does not guarantee a roster invite, simply they performed well during their tryout attendance.

POSITION PLAYERS:

Jared Grindlinger OF / LHP / Huntington Beach, CA / 2027

The number one player in the 2027 for the State of California showed why during his appearance at the Prep Baseball ProCase West. Checking in at a measured 6'3 180 lbs. Grindlinger started his day by taking an impressive batting practice session with the second highest exit velocity for a 2027 from California by posting a max exit velocity of 99.2 MPH while averaging 94 MPH throughout his two rounds. The LH hitter blasted a 375' drive with a hard hit rate of 88% and sweet spot rate of 66% in his two rounds showing his consistent feel for hard contact with raw power. His Blast Motion metrics were impressive throughout his batting practice and the combination of his strong batted ball data, impressive swing metrics showed up during the game play portion of the day. Grindlinger had a pair of at bats during the sim game posting a pair of base hits including a 100+ MPH exit velocity single which he turned into a run for the west squad. Grindlinger's athleticism was on display when running the bases and playing CF where he looks comfortably strong to stay long term as a defensive option.

Carson Sheffer C / 1B / Oaks Christian, CA / 2026

Sheffer entered the ProCase West event not at 100%, but the Oklahoma State commit showed off his competitive side and intriguing overall toolset to standout in a group of impressive players from the 2026-2027 classes. With five catchers throwing from all the states in attendance Sheffer was the top performer with an 83 MPH C arm velocity and was neck and neck with Alain Gomez Gudino from Arizona for pop times with a 1.87-1.95 range over his workout throws. His 6.81 60 yard dash time was second amongst all catchers in attendance showcasing his strong athleticism while adding 1.61 10 yard and 3.73 30 yard splits on VALD. During batting practice Sheffer took a pair of strong rounds posting a 95 MPH max exit velocity, 353' max distance and identical 64% hard hit and sweet spot rates. His batting practice carried over into the game with a two hit performance the first a 90+ MPH single to CF on the first pitch he saw on the day and then his athletic ability showed up when he beat out and INF single in his final trip to the plate on the day. A strong showing all around for the Oaks Christian High School backstop as he kicks off his summer on the circuit.

James Tronstein OF / SS / HARVARD-WESTLAKE, CA / 2026

The 2024 Prep Baseball All American Game alum and 2023 Team California Future Game alum made a strong case for a return trip to Miami based on yet another loud performance in front of the Prep Baseball scouting staff. Checking in at 5'11 175 lbs. Tronstein showed his athletic ability and versatility throughout the workout portion by first running a Top 10 60 time at 6.61 with the third fastest 10 yard split at 1.55 and fourth fastest 30 yard split at 3.64 while his 29.7" vertical jump was the third best in attendance. During the defensive workout Tronstein showed off a 91 MPH OF arm velocity with carry and accuracy before coming on the INF dirt to showcase smooth hands, quick feet and a smooth accurate 84 MPH arm. But, the nickname Tronny Barrels was on display again when he consistently hammered the baseball over two rounds of batting practice reaching a max exit velocity of 100.7 MPH while averaging 94.3 MPH. His underlying batted ball data with 81% hard hit rate, 68% sweet spot rate, 387' max distance and 82% fly ball/line drive rate were amongst the best of any player in attendance. His offensive profile played in game at a high level yet again as Tronstein rocketed a pair of base hits in game both at 94 MPH one to RCF on a CB he kept his hands back on before turning around a FB later in the game to LCF and lined out to SS in his third trip to the dish while also stealing a base in game.

CJ Weinstein SS / Huntington Beach High, CA / 2026

Weinstein was a 2024 Prep Baseball All American game attendee and the Huntington Beach High School and LSU alum made a strong case to head back to Miami this year. He checked in at 6'1 184 lbs. before running a 6.93 60 yard time and posting a solid 84 MPH INF arm velocity with solid footwork and hands during the defensive workout. His second round of batting practice was electric including a 99 MPH max exit velocity on a 384' drive while hammering the baseball consistently into the pull side gap and over the fence. Weinstein produced a 73% hard hit rate, 60% sweet spot rate and a 73% fly ball/line drive rate during his overall batting practice session. While his workout was strong the LH hitter and up the middle defender kicked it up a notch when the game play portion began by collecting a pair of base hits against premium arms. Weinstein singled up the middle in a really strong first at bat showcasing his adjustability and feel to grind against tough pitches before capitalizing when getting his pitch to hit and then stung another single in his second at bat. In addition to his plate presence Weinstein made an athletic and electric barehanded play from SS to nail a runner on a slow roller.

Dylan Seward SS / 2B / Norco High, CA / 2027

On a day full of electric athletes and top end baseball players the overall day for the number 4 ranked 2027 in California was amongst the best of any player in attendance. Checking in with an athletic 5'11 171.3 lbs frame the switch hitter from the Inland Empire generated buzz early in the day by posting an event best 6.18 60 yard dash time while adding 1.53 10 yard and 3.48 30 yard splits while topping the vertical jump testing at 34.1" and was second in the RSI power testing at 2.69. His athleticism shows up when on the INF dirt with a bouncy quick first step, athletic actions through the ball on the dirt, silky smooth hands and the arm strength 91 MPH and accuracy to profile as an impact defender at SS. The switch hitter put on a loud display during batting practice with a 102.8 MPH max exit velocity which was tops for a 2027 California player in attendance and seventh overall while adding a 96.7 MPH average exit velocity (fourth in attendance) and a 390' max distance while hammering the ball from both sides of the plate. His underlying data shows intriguing information to confirm his high level offensive profile with a 93% hard hit rate (tied for first), 68% sweet spot rate and a 82% fly ball/line drive rate with all of his hard contact being in the air at quality angles. Far from a workout warrior the switch hitter posted an impressive in game showing by drawing a walk against Eli Herst in a deep count at bat from the LH side and then came back to drill a 90+ MPH exit velocity single to RCF from the RH side before stealing a bag at the plate. Seward has made a strong case for a potential All American game invite while cementing himself as one of the pre-eminent recruits at the SS position in the country for the 2027 class.

Taytum Reeves C / 3B / Vista Murrieta, CA / 2026

Reeves made the trip up from the Inland Empire and the Texas Tech commit backstop made a strong impression with his overall showing. Strongly built presently at 5'10 183.3 lbs with solid present athletic ability running a 6.78 60 yard time posting a 1.60 10 yard and 3.77 30 yard splits while reaching a peak run speed of 20.4 MPH. His athletic ability translates into his work behind the plate where he shows high level catch and throw tools that were on display during the workout with a 81 MPH C arm velocity and 1.93-2.00 pop time range, plus in game with clean receiving actions. His bat shows high level ability including strength in his swing with a 97 MPH max exit velocity, 345' max distance and identical 46% hard hit and sweet spot rates while producing a 67% fly ball/line drive rate during his batting practice session. His offensive profile showed during the sim game when he stung a single to leftfield at over 95 MPH and drew a walk over the course of his three at bats.

PITCHERS:

McCoy Silicz RHP / 1B / Bakersfield Christian High School, CA / 2026

Silicz continues to make movement up the 2026 class board and his performance at the ProCase West showed why he is on an upward trend. Taking the mound second for the squad from California Silicz faced five hitters during which he struck out three hitters two coming via whiffs in zone and one on a chase out of the zone while lone hit against him came on a soft INF single. Silicz featured a three pitch mix fronted by his 90-93 MPH FB which featured spin rates approaching nearly 2500 RPMs and 17.7" of IVB from a 6'3" release height. Backing up the high quality FB for Silicz is an impressive CHG at 81-83 MPH with a SPLT like movement profile that has heavy tumble and fade, plus his 79-82 MPH SLD with two-plane shape. Silicz got uncomfortable swings while inducing whiff/soft contact at the bottom of the zone. With a physical 6'5 222.7 lbs frame and feel to throw strikes from a clean delivery Silicz has a long term starters profile. In addition, he adds an interesting power RH hitting profile that during batting practice topped at 101.9 MPH on his exit velocity, 381' max distance, a 83% hard hit rate, 75% sweet spot rate and 91% fly ball/line drive rate.

Jake Ourique RHP / Gahr , CA / 2026

The newly uncommitted Ourique had yet another outstanding performance on the Prep Baseball stage with the righthander flashing his high level pitchability and strike throwing ability to go with upward trending stuff. Ourique retired the first five hitters he faced on under 15 pitches allowing him to face one extra hitter. Over his six batter outing Ourique showed off an upward trending FB that now reaches 91.3 MPH while sitting at 89-90 MPH that has both ride and run in the shape with spin rates above 2300 RPMs. Ourique features one of if not the most deceptive CHGs in the 2026 class which he throws at 79-80 MPH while getting fade to this arm side with tumble vertically to induce whiff from both RH and LH hitters. The SLD for Ourique like his FB has ticked up now being thrown at 73-76 MPH and averaging nearly -13" of horizontal break and over 2500 RPMs of spin. He induced soft ground ball contact for four of his outs and struck out one hitter with no balls leaving the INF in his first five hitters. A starter profile with high level pitchability and a pitch arsenal that continues to get better Ourique has an intriguing ceiling which has showed consistently.

Gary Morse RHP / RHP / Orange Lutheran, CA / 2026

A Top 10 player in the 2026 class and number one ranked RHP in the class Morse was the first arm to throw for the California squad and made a loud impression towards his case for a return trip to Miami for the Prep Baseball All American game. Morse attacked aggressively with a FB that peaked at 96.1 MPH (top velocity for the event) living at 94.4-95.5 MPH in his outing with an average of 15.8" of IVB and 2299 RPMs of spin.  Morse spun a solid 77-78 MPH CB which he flashed feel to throw for strikes, but his CHG was the primary offspeed offering coming in at 83.7-86.5 MPH with arm side fade up to 14.2" while averaging around 1600 RPMs of spin on the offering. His five batter look was very strong including a pair of Ks the first coming on a FB with the second coming off a CHG, plus picking up a broken bat on a well thrown CHG and rolling over another hitter on a quality CB.

Gavin Guy RHP / 1B / Newport Harbor High, CA / 2026

Guy started slowly in his outing allowing a hit to the first batter he faced, but the UCSB commit righthander out of Orange County responded quickly. Over the next four batters he picked up a soft grounder to first on a CHG and then struck out the final three hitters he faced all on FBs (two swinging and one looking). An athletic mover with projection in his 6'4 190.3 lbs. prototype pitchers frame Guy has a high floor with an intriguing ceiling. His pitch arsenal continues to tick upward heading into the summer circuit throwing his FB at 87.1 to 90.1 MPH with spin rates now approaching 2300 RPMs getting life up in the zone on his offering including 17.7" of peak IVB and 14.4" of average IVB.  Guy backed up the FB with an interesting SLD he threw at 75 MPH and spinning upwards of 2500 RPMs and a CHG in the 79-80 MPH range which he throws with effective arm speed and feel to generate arm side fade with tumble in the zone.

Caleb Trugman RHP / 3B / Ruben S. Ayala, CA / 2026

Another UCSB bound righthander who put on an impressive display with his five batter look the 6'5 204 lbs. Trugman has seen the life of his pitch arsenal tick up to go with his sound feel to throw strikes. Trugman picked up a pair of strikeouts over his five batter inning one coming on a FB whiff in zone and the other coming on a pair of whiffs against his CHG. He induced two softly hit groundouts one one a FB inside and allowed one hard hit ball on a fly out to LF versus his breaking ball. Trugman worked predominantly of his FB which lived at 88.5 MPH to 91.2 MPH while featuring life to the arm side including 15.3" of max horizontal movement and averaging 13.6" of horizontal movement. Add in the 7' of extension Trugman gets on his FB the ball gets on hitters quicker than the 91 MPH velocity to miss bats and pick up soft contact. He spins a sweepy like SLD at 71.7 to 72.8 MPH getting an average of -13.9" of horizontal movement while peaking at -15.2" and spin rates above 2300 RPMs. The CHG for Trugman is a high quality pitch that he throws at 79-80 MPH with FB arm speed, 7'2" of extension and arm side fade that tunnels with his FB (14.6" average horizontal movement and a peak of 15.7") the tunneling of these two pitches helps to generate whiff/soft contact on the two. Trugman has an east/west attack profile, high level pitchability and control to go with his durable athletic frame that projects a long term starters profile. Trugman took a strong batting practice as a two-way player who reached 95.2 MPH on his max exit velocity, 357' max distance, 53% hard hit and sweet spot rates with a 94% fly ball/line drive rate from an uphill path.
