Indiana Rankings Update: Class of 2028

Indiana Staff
Prep Baseball Indiana

The 2028 class graduates to the sophomore class and our rankings see a slight expansion after this group enjoyed their rookie campaigns' for their respective high school programs. Our list was expanded to 100 after a winter of identifying young talent, and now stands at 125. At this stage in the game, this is much more of a follow list than it is a set-in-stone picture of where all players will end up in three years. Several will rise, as well as fall, with our most likely 'picks to click' seeing their names near the top due to several determining factors.

The sophomore seasons almost-always brings maturation to bodies, toolsets, skillsets, and more - but for now enjoy some notes on the top-ranked players in the class along with a highlight on the risers that saw early impacts at the varsity level.

Top 6️⃣

+ This top ten features big talent coming to the forefront of the class and begins with four bats in the top 6. SS Dylan Murphy (North Posey) remains at No. 1 after a freshman campaign that included 3 homers and 18 stolen bases for a North Posey club that was featured in our 2A top 10 nearly all spring. We are still bullish on the frame, athleticism, and mental maturity of Murphy, but he's starting to get pushed by our most notable riser in this update, CF Canyon Koonce (Brownsburg), who climbs to the No. 2 overall spot. Koonce (clip below) finished amongst the HCC leaders in batting average, posting a .406 average and 20 stolen bases for the Sectional Champions. There is strength beginning to pack onto the 6-foot frame leading to impactful bat speed being flashed this spring. The bat-to-ball is some of the best in the class presently, as was the run times our staff got on him this spring (into 4.1s).

+ SS Jack Whaley (Columbus North) and OF Mason Biernacki (Penn) fall a spot due to the rise of Koonce, but the margin amongst these bats is much closer than it appears. Whaley (clip below) enjoyed a quality debut campaign for Columbus North, hitting .310 with 2 2B, 4 3B, and 3 HR, looking the part of a run-producer with some of the best raw power in the class to date. He is challenged for that by Biernacki, who also likely owns the loudest present toolset of the group. There are big gamer tendencies to mitigate the profile, and he earned spot starts this spring for the top-ranked 4A program in the state. It feels like a demotion for these two, but in reality both have the ingredients to challenge the two names above them with continued tool elevations and further production.

+ Two arms appear at the forefront of this class in RHP Cole Breeden (Mater Dei) and another riser, RHP/SS Billy Miller (Kouts), up to No. 5 overall in this update. Breeden is the top-ranked arm in the class still, a 6-foot-5 high-upside arm with starter traits and a fastball reaching 87 mph during sectional play. Miller, up to 90 in a spring look, is the hardest throwing 28 on our board with an athletic delievery and an arsenal that also includes quality spin. His athletic, wiry, 6-foot-1 frame holds ample room for continued strength gains, and he is also one of the highest-regarded shortstops in the class by our staff. Although it was versus 1A competiton, Miller batted .549 to lead all 2028s in average this spring, with an astounding 12 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, and 19 stolen bases through sectional play.

+ While the top six create the top tier of this list as it stands now, another handful of prospects remain close behind tiered from 7-13 on the list. Many saw at least a taste of the varsity diamond as freshman, while four made instant impact to big programs. RHP Bodhi Pulley (Bloomington North) saw 19.1 innings of varsity time for B-North, while OF Hayden Zellers (Greenfield-Central) and C Spencer Schiff (Mater Dei) enjoyed successful springs as impact bats for sectional championship winning programs. OF Andrew Noble (Westfield) is planted firmly amongst this group, an explosive athlete with the best run tool in the class to date. Noble squeaked his way into the varsity rotation for an upperclassman-heavy Rocks squad that came away victorious in Sectional 8. This group leads the pack for now, with our risers led off by a new face within this update in....

Risers

+ RHP/SS Drew Morgan (Mt. Vernon) jumps to No. 14 in this update after an impressive look at the youngster in a sectional environment. He came into a tough situation and handled it with poise, showing three pitches that included a fastball up to 87 mph. The 6-foot-1 frame has ample room to add to it, and he also saw time as a starter in the Mt. Vernon infield as just a freshman. He did his best work on the mound for the Marauders, appearing 8 times (10 IP) without allowing an earned run.

+ A pair of left-handed hitting infielders see a slight rise with SS Brody McGaha (Mooresville) at No. 20 and SS Donovan Craig (Munster) at No. 22 overall. McGaha led all 4A freshman with a .473 batting average indicating his short, accurate left-handed stroke should indeed prevale as these youngsters face better and better velocities. The infield actions from McGaha are some of the best in the class with an evolving run tool that posted 4.4s down the line this spring. Craig was just as impressive as a freshman facing 4A competition, boasting a .424 batting average with 8 extra-base hits. The Munster native jumps 9 spots after performing as one of our favorites at the Freshman Preseason All-State in February.

+ Four arms rise into the top 40, most notably LHP Charlie Johnson (Cathedral), appearing at No. 23 overall. Johnson carved out an impact role for sectional champion Cathedral, totaling 17+ IP with a sub-2 ERA and 22 strikeouts. RHP Rhys Sorgius (Gibson Southern) (clip) is one of our more bullish follows with dynamic movement patterns and a frame that should pack on velocity in a hurry. He showed flashes of big upside in a spring look, as did another new face to the list, RHP Brady Martin (Greenfield-Central). Martin (tweet) earned leverage roles for the sectional champion Cougars this spring, logging 37+ IP with a 1:1 K/IP. He pitched to a sub-2 ERA while finishing sectional play with a 5-2 record. RHP Caiden Pohler (Huntington North) also gained over 25 innings of experience at the 4A varsity level this spring. Pohler performed at our Northeast ID this winter to earn a spot on the list in our T100 expansion, and he sees a 3 spot rise into the T40 after posting this spring.

+ Three more performers to note that see a rise conclude this update. Appearing for the first time after jumping on the scene with everyday starts at times for 3A #1 Andrean, SS/RHP Matthew Kulig slates in at No. 46 as it stands now. There are several traits to be bullish on with Kulig, including loose, natural arm action, a high-waisted frame, and bat-to-ball skills that played against low-90s velos in a look this spring (swing in clip). Following Kulig and jumping into the T50 is RHP Cass Omlor (Zionsville). Omlor was a light-but-right performer from our All-State that earned some varsity innings for the Eagles, and looks the part of a next-up arm from the Zionsville pitching factory that has produced 7 D1 signee arms in its last 3 graduating classes. Another light-but-right arm jumps significantly this update in LHP Austin Semmler (Terre Haute South). His fastball still plays in the upper-70s, but the high-waisted, still-physically immature, 6-foot frame, clean arm, and quality feel for spin are all positive traits. Velocity is a sure bet as the lean frame adds strength, with his feel for command showing clear this spring with just 10 walks in 31 innings of work at the 4A level. Strike-throwing lefties always tend to move up the board with age and our staff is getting ahead of this one now with Semmler slated at No. 56 overall in this update.
