Indiana Rankings Update: Class of 2027

Indiana Staff
Prep Baseball Indiana

As the spring comes to a close and the ever-important sophomore summer descends upon us, recruiters will be out in packs to get looks on the top uncommitted talent that the Hoosier State has to offer. This August, the contact period for college coaches to directly communicate with recruits in this class will open, and we predict several of the top-ranked players to be heavily recruited at that time.

This update comes with modest movement, with most of our preseason evaluations holding true through the spring. However, we give credit where it is due and this update rewards several prospects who performed at a high level this spring. Find those names, notes on the top 10, and more ⬇️.

But first, find the full list of 225 prospects at this link.

Top 10 Entering the Summer...

+ Our top 6 remains unchanged after the spring with all players in this group performing to expectations to remain in the most prestigious spots in the class. The top two, SS Isaiah Snavely (FW Snider) and CF Drake McClurg (Center Grove), were two of the top sophomore performers in 4A with virtually identical slashlines. Snavley slashed .378/.462/.633 highlighted by 13 extra-base hits, while McClurg batted leadoff all spring for #2 Center Grove while slashing .378/.510/.622 with 12 extra-base hits and 12 stolen bases.

+ RHP Cole Cheatham (Union County) remains as the top-ranked arm in the class with an absurd strikeout rate this spring - punching 84 batters in 32.2 IP and only allowing 17 free passes with the 94 mph heater he is armed with. Cheatham remains at No. 3 overall position in the class, while RHP Elijah Hall (Noblesville), up to 91 several times this spring, maintains status as the No. 2 ranked arm (No. 6 overall) after a quality season for the Millers. OF/1B Grady Nelson (Warsaw) and SS Parker Robinson (Lake Central) remain at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, after Nelson led 4A sophomores with 4 HR and Robinson batted over .300 with double digit extra-base hit totals.

+ Our first riser in this update appears at No. 7, the top-ranked backstop in the class - Cooper Collins (Vincennes Lincoln). He led the SIAC with a .462 average this spring while also providing a run-stopping force behind the dish with arguably the best catch & throw tool in the 2027 class on a national scale, firing mid-80s bullets from the crouch with b/w inning pops reaching into the 1.7s...

+ RHP Gavin Markus (Greenfield-Central) and SS Liam Delp (Mooresville) are familiar faces in the top 10 that enjoyed quality springs and hold down the No. 8 & No. 9 spot in this update, while the No. 10 spot is reserved for arguably the biggest offensive performer amongst 4A sophomores this spring - OF/C Mason Meyer (Mt. Vernon). A 6.7 runner with swiss-army knife defensive versatility, Meyer led 4A sophomore-regulars in batting average (.421) while also clubbing double digit extra-base hit totals and swiping double digit bags.

Spring ⭐

Ben Canada SS / ST THEODORE GUERIN HIGH SCHOOL, IN / 2027

+ Canada is our most notable riser in this update, jumping 17 spots to the No. 11 overall position after a breakout spring for Guerin Catholic. He maintained a north-of-.400 batting average against stiff competition while his 6 homers tied for the most amongst all sophomores in the state. His left-handed bat and projectable frame are sure to gain him notarity on the circuit this summer, with a chance to grab even more helium as we near August 1...

Top 50 📈 & Performers to Note

+ While much of our evaluations carried through the spring, our staff highlights a group of players rising within the top 50 of this class, a prestigious ranking reserved only for those in which we have evaluated as division one caliber recruits entering the summer. Left-handed pitching is an obvious strength of this group, with 15 primary LHP comfortably within the top 100 as the list stands now. Our three highest ranked southpaws in the class all see a bit of a bump in this update. Davis Moore (Zionsville) and Riley Ackerman (Crown Point) stand at the top and appear back to back at No. 16 & No. 17, with Moore's pitch shapes and deception giving him the slight edge at this point. Moore posted a quality sophomore statline with a 4-1 record against HCC competition, pitching to a 2.26 ERA with a BB/K of 6/38 in 31 innings of work. Ackerman was just as good pitching out of a loaded Crown Point bullpen, posting a 3-1 record while pitching to a sub-1 ERA with a BB/K of 7/27 in 21.1 IP. LHP/OF Aden Baggett (Evansville North) jumps to No. 22 overall after pitching to a sub-2 ERA for the Huskies, racking up 34 K to just 11 BB in 26.2 IP.

+ A pair of right-handers get rewarded after positive in-game looks by our staff this spring in RHP Sam Tokar (Yorktown) and RHP Destin Billings (Washington Township). Tokar's in-game look brought upper-80s heaters with flashes of a future wipeout slider coming out of the hand of the projectable, athletic, 6-foot-3 right-hander. The Yorktown native rises to the No. 25 (#7 RHP) spot as one of our more-bullish takes in this update, though the movement patterns (arm action, delivery, frame) certaintly warrant a jump, the strikes will be monitored moving forward, and improved control will allow for an even further jump up the board. Billings ran his near sidearmed fastball up to 90 in our spring look, with the slot inducing wicked arm-side life and sink at times, and he racked up a 11/45 BB/K this spring to warrant a move to No. 30 (#10 RHP).

+ The back-half of our top 50, specifically spots 25-50, houses seventeen arms to this point, speaking directly to the depth of arms in this class, and there is not much separation amongst this group. RHPs Chase Gothrup (Harrison) and Bryton Gregg (Greencastle) cement themselves further amongst this group after posting two of the top sophomore campaigns on the hill amongst their peers, from a statistical standpoint. Two Indianapolis-area natives highlight the risers in this bunch in RHP Sam Flickinger (Westfield) and RHP Henry Haley (Cathedral). Flickinger posted a sub-2 ERA against HCC competition while throwing leverage innings for the Rocks, while Haley carved out a significant role in the Cathedral rotation as a sophomore this spring, both jumping 5 spots and now sitting at No. 43 & No. 44 overall.

+ Two position players see themselves rise into the coveted top 50 in this update in OF Shane Bardwell (Homestead) and MIF Gio Ardizzone (Roncalli). Bardwell posted big metrics at our Preseason All-State and backed that by hitting atop the highly-ranked Spartans lineup throughout the spring. A physical, compact, 5-foot-11, 190 pounder - his 6.8 speed helped him steal 23 bases this spring while the near triple digit exit velocities he produced in showcase resulted in just 5 XBH. More in-game power shown should shoot him further up the list, while his swing and miss rates will certaintly be monitored, as well. Ardizzone got off to a blazing start to the spring before 'cooling' to a final average of .402, and he clubbed 9 doubles and a pair of homers for Roncalli. His 6.69 speed helped him to 16 stolen bases on the spring and he enters the top 50 for the first time, currently tiered amongst a group of some of our favorite infielders in the class.

+ Another group of position players see a rise into the top 100 after posting number this spring. C/UTL Cal Lemmons (Morgan Township) is a new face that debuts at No. 59 overall after posting a .440 average with big power numbers that included 7 doubles, 8 triples, and 4 homers on the spring. Although Morgan Township does compete in the 1A class, Lemmons posted these stats against a scheduled filled with 3A & 4A opponents to give more validity to statline he posted. Another small school performer was OF Micah Toler (Heritage Hills), who rises into the top 70 for the first time after a standout spring in Southern Indiana. Toler's .444/.544/.683 slashline paired with a high-waisted frame merits a significant bump and he is a quality follow on the circuit this spring. 3B Brayden Campbell (Gibson Southern), SS Carsten Bland (Franklin Community), OF Brady Vince (Dekalb), and C Carson Kail (Guerin Catholic) are also worth noting with at least a 10-spot rise in this update, earned by standout springs for their respective high school programs.

+ To conclude, and tie back to the left-handed pitching depth we noted earlier, we wanted to highlight four LHPs rising in the back-half of the top 100. All four arms pitched significant innings for their high school program this spring, boasting competitive earned run averages, more strikeouts than innings pitched, and less walks than innings pitched - statistics that we value in the rankings process. The southpaws rising include: No. 60 (#5 LHP) Jaiden McNulty (Western), No. 62 (#7 LHP) Aveary Johnson (Northridge), No. 70 (#8 LHP) Cayden McGrew (Evansville Reitz), and No. 77 (#10 LHP) Miles Brockhouse (Dekalb).
