Today we are releasing our final version of the 2025 Virginia/DC Private School Rankings. With the vast majority of the Take a look at some notes on a few teams from inside the rankings.
- The vast majority of the Private School seasons are finished and St. John's reigns supreme. The Cadets finished off an outstanding 2025 campaign with a WCAC Championship that included a perfect WCAC record. SJC was led by seniors Clayton Armah (Auburn), Sean McCabe (College of Charleston), WCAC Player of the Year Ren Devereux (Penn State), Gavin Weber (Shenandoah), Nate Hawton-Henley (Maryland), Nick Felton (ODU), and Caleb Hawton-Henley (Randolph-Macon). In addition to their experience and production, all of those players were named to the WCAC First-Team. In addition to securing their #1 spot in the Power 25, they will also maintain their top spot in the Private School Top 10 for the remainder of 2025. This is the first time in memory that a team has maintained their #1 Private School spot for the entire year (since first release on 4/1).
- Miller School capped off yet another strong season, this one ending with a VISAA DI state title. After a 2-1 loss at St. Christopher's on April 30th, the Mavericks rolled the next nine games, scoring 92 runs and allowing 18. Up and down the order, the Mavericks dominated opposing pitchers and got really strong contributions on the mound from the likes of Kason Wagner, Evan Hankins (Tennessee), Jake Rexrode (Ferrum), Naomi Ryan, and Drew Wade. Coach Wagner's group ran through the VISAA DI playoffs with wins over Benedictine, Cape Henry, and a thirteen run victory over Paul VI in the championship game.
- Following two spots behind the Mavericks are the VISAA DII Champion Highland Hawks. This is the second state title in four years for Coach Higgins' group. After a tough stretch in early May that saw the Hawks lose four of five, Highland scored thirty-two runs in their final three games, including a run rule victory over Steward in the championship game. They played with a renewed sense of urgency and an edge that had been missing for parts of the season. Benjamin Cardone (VMI) and Christian Dart (Roanoke) were two of the big bats for the Hawks that propelled the offense forward in the VISAA semi's and finals.
- Cape Henry shoots up a few spots, even after a loss in the semi's to Miller School. The Dolphins boasted one of the toughest schedules of any of these teams and went 15-4 in the months of April and May. In those two months they had a 3-1 loss to Miller School, 1-0 loss to Hickory, 11-9 loss to First Colonial (the defending Class 5 Champions), and a semifinal loss to Miller School. Colin Lebel (George Washington) had an All-State type of year and was joined by Reid Downs (Richmond), Ryan Dobrinsky, and Ryan Hummel (Randolph-Macon) as some senior catalysts in the lineup.
- Finishing up some notes on other teams:
- St. Alban's claimed the DCSAA Championship with a gutty performance from the top ranked 2025 Myles Upchurch (Alabama).
- Walsingham won their seventh straight VISAA DIII title on Saturday. They were led with a strong performance on the mound by junior right hander Matthew Swanson (JMU).
- Coach Secrest, aka Mr. May, led the Steward Spartans on yet another magical run in the VISAA tournament. They defeated Nansemond-Suffolk on Monday and then upset top seeded Greenbrier Christian on Friday to advance to yet another VISAA DII title game.
- St. Alban's claimed the DCSAA Championship with a gutty performance from the top ranked 2025 Myles Upchurch (Alabama).
