DIVISION II (SELECT) STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES PREVIEW

When the Division II (Select) playoff bracket was released, one half felt all but decided — with #1 Teurlings Catholic sitting as the clear favorite — while the other side looked wide open. That prediction has largely held true. Teurlings Catholic has steamrolled its way back to Sulphur, while #7 E.D. White has taken a more unpredictable route, emerging as one of the surprise stories of this year’s state tournament. Yet here they both are, set to clash with a state championship on the line.

Teurlings Catholic Rebels

The defending state champions entered the 2025 season with sky-high expectations — and have met every one of them. Head Coach Brooks Badeaux has led the Rebels to a 32-4 record, and through three rounds of postseason play, they’ve outscored opponents by a staggering 58–11 margin. Simply put, Teurlings Catholic has looked every bit like a team on a mission to repeat.

A major reason for their dominance lies in the depth of their pitching staff. Junior LHP Evan Vincent, a Louisiana-Lafayette commit, has emerged as one of the top arms in the state. The crafty southpaw presents a tough look with a cross-fire delivery and low ¾ arm slot, sitting in the mid-to-upper 80s and featuring a wipeout mid-70s slider that’s become a nightmare with two strikes. Junior LHP Dylan Helms adds another quality option — a strike-thrower with a three-pitch mix, including a low-to-mid 80s fastball.

Senior Jace Garber has logged valuable innings, while sophomore righties Lincoln Guillory and Isaac Boudreaux give the Rebels even more depth. Guillory, a high-leverage bullpen weapon, can run his fastball into the upper 80s. Boudreaux, a long and projectable 6’3” arm, also works into the upper 80s with a loose, easy delivery that has big upside.

Offensively, Teurlings is relentless. They wear pitchers down with quality at-bats from top to bottom. Sophomore leadoff hitter Kaden Chavis sets the tone — a tough out with elite speed. Junior Will Power, the team's starting shortstop, follows behind, and senior Ryan Berard (LSU-Eunice) anchors the middle of the order. Berard is a reliable run-producer who delivered the walk-off hit in last year’s semifinal to send the Rebels to the title game.

The lineup is deep and experienced. Seniors Brant Badeaux, Jack Purser, Porter Stuart, and Jack Ortego bring steady production, while junior Brennen Storms, a returning starter from last year’s title run, continues to be a key contributor. This group has remained near the top of our Power 25 Rankings all season — and it’s no mystery why. They play clean, complete baseball and know exactly what it takes to win it all.

E.D. White Cardinals

E.D. White returns to the state championship series after an up-and-down regular season — but they’ve caught fire at the right time. Despite being a #7 seed, the Cardinals are playing their best baseball of the year and arrive in Sulphur riding a wave of momentum.

Their success has been built around pitching and timely hitting. In seven playoff games, E.D. White has allowed just 11 total runs. Sophomore Grant Kirkpatrick has been the go-to arm in each opening-round matchup, including a dominant semifinal outing against Archbishop Hannan where he tossed a complete-game shutout with five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Sophomore Owen Blanchard has also stepped up, throwing a complete game and allowing just two earned runs in the decisive game against Hannan. If a Game 3 is needed, the Cardinals could turn to freshman southpaw Carter Falgoust — one of the most talented arms in Louisiana’s 2028 class. Falgoust already pitches in the low-to-mid 80s with a feel for a low-70s curveball, showing poise beyond his years.

The Cardinals’ offense hasn’t been explosive, but it’s been timely — averaging just over four runs per game during their playoff run. Senior Jax Triche leads off and sets the tone, followed by junior shortstop Evan Arcement in the two-hole. Junior Grant Barbera is a physical, left-handed bat who anchors the middle of the order and is also the team’s starting quarterback on the gridiron in the fall.

It’s a tale of two different paths — #1 Teurlings Catholic, the reigning champs and heavy favorite, versus #7 E.D. White, the resilient underdog playing with house money. Will the Rebels finish what they started and bring another title back to Lafayette? Or will the Cardinals crash the party and claim the crown?

We’ll find out starting Thursday afternoon at McMurry Park in Sulphur, LA.
