2025 CHSAA 5A Final Four Team Breakdowns
May 27, 2025
The stage is set! Cherry Creek, Grandview, Regis Jesuit and Broomfield are your final four teams in 5A. These programs will square off this Friday and Saturday (May 30/31) at All-Star Park in Lakewood with games beginning at 10AM each day (Full 5A-2A schedule)
Cherry Creek is the lone undefeated team from bracket play thus far, which means they have won five games in a row in postseason and are automatically in the championship. We will see Broomfield and Regis Jesuit matchup for the first elimination game on Friday followed by the winner against Grandview at 12:30 PM on Friday. Since this is a double-elimination format, on Saturday the winner of the second game from Friday would have to beat Cherry Creek twice in order to become the 5A state champion while Cherry Creek needs just one win to claim back to back 5A state championships.
Let's dive into the remaining four teams:
BROOMFIELD EAGLES:
The Eagles went 12-1 this year in the 5A/4A Granite Peaks League where they took first place (20-3 overall). Following the regular season, Broomfield received the 5-seed regional host where they beat Fort Collins and then had a no-hitter performance from senior LHP Maverick Scarpella (Indian Hills CC commit) for a win against Cherokee Trail. Broomfield won their first game in the state championship bracket 5-2 against Fossil Ridge before falling in a close one to Grandview 5-4. The Eagles had to fight back late in the losers bracket against Arvada West when they scored 7 runs in the 6th and 7th inning for a 9-6 win. Broomfield and Regis Jesuit have not matched up this spring, but we are likely to see plenty of firepower on the mound from these two teams in a must-win game. Scarpella has been fantastic in the postseason and has pitched to a 1.55 ERA overall this season across 49.2 innings. The lefty comes with plenty of pitchability and a breaking ball he lands for strikes and whiffs, in about any count. This lineup is led at the top by senior catcher Brendan Fritch who is committed to Davidson to continue his baseball career. Fritch is hitting .560 with 5 HR, 5 3B, 9 2B, and 13 stolen bases across 27 games this season and is one of the hottest hitters left in this state tournament. Overall, this Eagles' lineup is scrappy and deep with players from all classes contributing at the moment. Broomfield is looking for their 7th baseball state title and first since 2022.
REGIS JESUIT RAIDERS:
Regis Jesuit is looking to finish the job in 2025 after being runner-ups just last spring. The Raiders put together a 16-7 campaign during the regular season and went 9-1 in the 5A/4A Continental League to take first place. During regionals, RJ hosted as the 6-seed when they handled Brighton 6-3 and had to win in walk-off fashion 2-1 against Mountain Vista in an absolute pitcher's duel between senior Chase Ruden (Santa Clara commit) and junior Hudson Alpert (Vanderbilt commit) for RJ. The Raiders won their first game in this state tournament against Arvada West 11-5 and then lost a close one late against Cherry Creek 4-3. Another late rally was needed from Regis Jesuit in their first game in the losers bracket when they put together a 4-run bottom of the 6th inning with a go-ahead bases-loaded hit from senior Nick Wiley (Anderson U commit) to win against Castle View. Junior Chase Massey (Boston College commit) has really begun to heat up with the bat in this postseason while Cronin, Reasbeck, Wiley, Lopez, and Stevenson are each hitting around .350 or higher at the moment. Coach Darr has been able to use a solid rotation of Alpert, Reasbeck, and Kroll on the mound which bodes well for their depth in these upcoming must-win games. Regis Jesuit is looking for their 4th baseball state title and first since 2019.
GRANDVIEW WOLVES:
Grandview has never won a Colorado baseball state championship, but they certainly have a great opportunity this season. The Wolves are already slotted into the semifinals where they await the winner between Broomfield and Regis Jesuit. Grandview came out of the 5A/4A Centennial League where they went 10-2 with an overall regular season record at 19-4. This program was ranked #1 in CHSAA's RPI which gave them the 1-seed hosting when they beat Poudre and Pueblo West in their regional. Junior Ethan Wachsmann (Wake Forest commit) took down a stout Castle View lineup in the Wolves' first game of the state tournament, and then they won a close game against Broomfield 5-4 to advance to the semifinals against Cherry Creek. Grandview just didn't quite have the pitching or offense rolling in the semifinal game against the Bruins when they lost 7-1. However, Wachsmann, Pfister, Giron, Dean, and Martensen will all have time to rest and reset this week before the stable has a chance to put together some quality innings on Friday and Saturday. Uncommitted senior Chase Chapman (1.358 OPS) is the big threat in this Wolves' lineup while Bohmeyer, Schimberg and Dean have contributed lately as well.
CHERRY CREEK BRUINS:
The Bruins couldn't have asked for a better chance to repeat as 5A state champions this year. Cherry Creek has two games to play with in the championship but could also just take care of business in the first game on Saturday to claim their crown. This program took first place in the 5A/4A Centennial League where they went 11-1 followed by an overall regular season record at 17-5-1. The Bruins received the 2-seed for regionals and won both of their games handedly against Denver North and Riverdale Ridge. Coach Smith has this group locked in for postseason play as they then took down Rocky Mountain, Regis Jesuit, and Grandview to advance to the 5A state championship. Many of the top contributors from last year's championship run are still on this roster which include players like; 1B/LHP Connor Larkin (Oklahoma commit), RHP Wyatt Rudden (Michigan commit), SS Sean Goldy (West Virginia commit), RHP Ryan Falke (Washington State commit), and 3B Mason Scott (Army commit) just to name a few. This is a very deep roster, and they are just one win away from sending many of these seniors off in remarkable fashion with the program's 10th baseball state championship.
