CHSAA 4A Final Four Team Breakdowns:
Golden Demons:
The Demons are 25-3 on the season. They finished 9-0 in the 4A/3A Jeffco League, good for 1st place. Golden finished as the 4-seed in 4A and hosted the regional round. Golden beat #29 Longmont 15-0 in the first game of regionals, they defeated #20 Pueblo South 10-2 in the 2nd gamed to advance to the state tournament for the 4th consecutive year. Golden kicked off the state tournament by beating #6 Cheyenne Mountain 7-4. Dodge City CC commit Sawyer Brinkman got the ball in game 1 of the state tournament and he did what he has done all year, pitched the Demons to victory. Brinkman went 6.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and punching out 9 while only walking 1. Brinkman has been the ace for this pitching staff all season and should certainly have the ball in his hands with the state title on the line. Brinkman is 10-0 with a 1.26 ERA this season, he has 105 strikeouts in 66.2 innings of work. Golden won game 2 in the state tournament against #2 Falcon 13-6. Western Oklahoma State commit, Luca Casali led the Demon offense going 2/4 with 2 RBIs. Casali leads the club with a .470 batting average, he has 11 doubles, 4 triples and 4 HRs on the year. Golden earned a spot in the championship game by pulling off a comeback win over #4 Windsor. Windsor held a 10-6 lead in the bottom of the 5th when Golden rallied for 6 runs to take a 12-10 lead. Golden held on to win the game 12-11. Brody McBroom picked up the save. McBroom has pitched many high leverage innings at the back-end of the Demons' bullpen this season, he has only allowed 4 earned runs in 12 appearances. The Demons are in the driver's seat this weekend, they need 1 win to take home the title and will have Sawyer Brinkman waiting for whoever advances to face them in the Championship.
Windsor Wizards:
Windsor comes in at 21-7 on the year. The Wizards went 8-4 and finished 3rd in the 5A/4A Northern Conference. Windsor was awarded the 6th seed and a host spot heading into regionals. Windsor defeated #27 Fort Morgan 9-4 and #11 Grand Junction 5-2 to make it to the state tournament. This squad opened the state tournament by defeating #5 Palisade 9-2. Southern Miss. commit Wyatt Gustafson got the ball in game 1 and he went 6.1 innings while only giving up 1 earned run and striking out 6. Gustafson is 9-1 on the year with a 0.92 ERA. The Wizards took down #1 Pueblo County in game 2. University of Northern Colorado commit Ethan Fillinger led the Wizard offense going 3/5 with 2 doubles, 5 RBIs, and has been one of the top bats in 4A for the past 3 years. Fillinger hit .500 in 102 PA this season, added 14 doubles and 4 HRs and will certainly be a guy teams need to be aware of in the final weekend. Fillinger has the type of offense production to take over games and if he gets hot this weekend, he could lead the Wizards to the title. Windsor dropped game 3 to #3 Golden 12-11. The Wizards held a lead late in game 3 but Golden was able to rally and pull off the win. Windsor will face the winner of Cheyenne Mountain & Palisade with a chance to get into the 4A title game. With top end talent like Gustafson and Fillinger plus a deep pitching staff, don't be surprised to see Windsor wear the crown at the end of the weekend.
Palisade Bulldogs:
Palisade sits at 19-9 on the season. They finished 7-3 and ended up 2nd in the 5A/4A Southwestern League. Palisade was the #7 seed and hosted a regional. The Bulldogs defeated #26 Canon City 6-4 and #23 Mullen 7-6 to advance to the State Tournament. Palisade lost the first game of the tournament to #4 Windsor. The Bulldogs battled back and defeated #8 Severance 14-0. The highly athletic Easton Embrey went 2/3 with 2 RBIs in the victory. Embrey hit .476 to go with 20 stolen bases on the year and has also chucked 48 innings on the mound while he is the type of player who will be dangerous for any team to face in an elimination game. Palisade defeated #2 Falcon 7-3 to survive and advance to the final weekend. Hunter Howard took this game over at the plate. Howard went 3/4 with a double and 2 triples (hitting .418 on the season). Dylon Larson is another name to watch for this weekend, he hit .537 on the season. If Embrey, Howard and Larson get hot this weekend they could lead the Bulldogs to the championship round.
Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks:
Cheyenne Mountain brings a 18-8-1 record into the final weekend. The Hawks finished 4-6 and in 4th place in the 4A Pikes Peak League. Cheyenne Mountain is the only team left who did not host a regional round. The Hawks were the #9 seed in regionals and defeated #24 Pueblo Central 17-16 and #25 Green Mountain 18-4 to reach the state tournament. This program is no stranger to playing the final weekend of the season, as they have 6 state championships to their name. The Red-Tailed Hawks opened the state tournament by losing to #3 Golden 7-4. They beat #7 Durango 9-1 behind a complete game gem from Javin Eslinger. Eslinger allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 5 over the 7 innings of work. Jansen Roberts went 2/3 and added his 8th homer on the year. The Hawks beat #1 Pueblo County 14-2 in the next game to advance to the final 4. Cheyenne Mountain has relied on their offense to carry them all year and if their bats get hot this weekend, they will be a tough out. The Hawks hit .366 as a team this year and have power up and down the lineup (65 doubles and 32 homers as a team). Roberts and Charlie Scofield led the team with 8 HRs. Nate Glad is not far behind with 7. The winner of Cheyenne Mountain/Palisade will move on to face Windsor.
