QUICK HITS

Jackson Whitcomb 3B / RHP / Lamar, MS / 2026

Athletic frame with solid tools across the board. Whitcomb is a Pearl River CC recruit but it remains to be seen how he will be used once he makes it to the Poplarville campus. The left handed hitting corner infielder had a solid bp round with multiple pull side liners and exit velocities consistently in the mid 90’s. He shows a good glove on defense and will likely hold down a corner infield spot and with his arm strength third base could be his primary position. Whitcomb definitely stood out this weekend with a fastball that reached 91 mph though his breaking ball showed some extreme tilt and swing a miss action.

Caden Lowery 1B / RHP / Wayne Academy, MS / 2027

Lowery has the look of an upperclassman though just finished his sophomore year at Wayne Academy. The 6-2, 175 pounder has a fairly mature frame with some room for added mass and when that happens he tool set will get even more impressive. On Sunday the right handed hitting Lowery smoked several pull side liners and found the wall on multiple occasions. He shows an adequate, though still developing arm and looks like he will settle in as a very sure handed first baseman. He runs decent (7.09) which could allow him to play an outfield position at some point as well.

Ian Smith RHP / C / Wayne Academy, MS / 2026

With his lean and wiry frame, Smith still has tons of upside but already shows a feel for multiple pitches in the strike zone which is half the battle. On Sunday the uncommitted junior showed off a running fastball that worked up to 83 mph with lots of ground ball potential. His change up was pretty impressive as he mimicked fastball arm action and had good fading action in the lower half of the zone while killing the spin well. His breaking ball is coming along and has nice shape and will get even better with maturity.

Gavin Austin OF / LHP / Madison Ridgeland Academy, MS / 2027

Austin gave us a glimpse of some dual role possibilities on Sunday both as an outfielder and left handed pitcher. The MRA prepster showed off good pop at the plate for a 2027 with exit velocities to 95 mph with primarily a pull side approach. He later stepped on the mound and worked his fastball up to 80 mph with looseness to his delivery. He’s still finding his way on the bump though the look is there and the next calendar year could be huge for Austin.

Charlie Fowler C / OF / Heritage Academy, MS / 2026

Fowler is coming off a very solid junior year in high school that saw him hit .439 with 6 home runs and 39 rbi’s. He also swiped 18 stolen bases and this weekend he showed off how he was able to produce those numbers. At the plate, the uncommitted rising senior had exit velocities up to 96 mph as he worked gap to gap with the ability to pull the inside pitch with power. He started the day with an event best 6.6 60 and could get a little faster over the summer. We can’t imagine this one being available much longer.

Chase Putman C / Lamar School, MS / 2027

Putnam was another Golden Spike that we feel has some dual role possibilities. The stocky sophomore had a pretty good day in all phases of the event. He moves particularly well for a catcher and shows advanced movements behind the plate. Putnam also turned in solid pop times at 1.91 to 2.12 and velocity from behind the plate at 74 mph. During his batting practice round he used a short, quick approach and sprayed the baseball to all fields With more pop on the way. As a right handed pitcher, he still has some development ahead of him but he did show good feel with a fastball that stays around 80 mph and secondary stuff in the making.
