Senior infielder Brendan Scheel (Winona State) has swung a hot and powerful bat for the Spartans all season while helping the Spartans go 2-1 on the week in conference play. Multiple standout performances both at the plate and on the mound on the week, going 7-for-12 with five extra base hits, 10 RBIs, five runs scored and a walk. Scheel would also earn two wins on the mound allowing one earned run across seven innings in relief on the week. For his efforts, Scheel was named this week’s Player of the Week.

Thursday is a conference matchup against St. Thomas More, Scheel would go 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double in the first inning and two runs scored.

Saturday in two games against Racine St. Catherines, Scheel would provide an impact across both games. Game one, a 10-7 win for the Spartans, Scheel would go 3-for-5 at the plate with two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored. Also the starting pitcher in the matchup, earning the win in a four innings appearance allowing one earned run and striking out four batters.

Game two, a 8-2 win for the Spartans, Scheel would provide a similar impact going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run, six RBIs, a walk and a run scored. Scheel would start on the mound once again, earning the win over four innings, allowing two unearned runs and striking out three batters.

The physical and strong 6-foot-4 right-handed hitter is one of the strongest players in the state’s senior class with easy strength at the plate. Getting to his game power more often this spring, seeing the run production and extra base hit numbers tick up in his final spring season.

Scouting Report

7/30/24

Imposing 6-foot-4, 240-pound infielder with incredible strength. Scheel was one of just two performers to reach triple digits in the exit velocity department, creating leverage out front with good feel for the barrel. The pull-side power is among the best in his class, hitting a home run on a ball he didn’t even quite square up. The actions at first base are decent, but he’ll go as far as his bat takes him.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
