We took a week off of a rankings update, as many teams were wrapping up their regular season, some in district tournament and some not, and then a large majority of the state saw significant scheduling impacts from the weather.

VA/DC Power 25 Update Notes

+ Moving back into the #2 spot are the Miller School Mavericks. The Mavericks steamrolled through the VISAA Division I playoffs, erasing Benedictine, Cape Henry, and then Paul VI in the championship game. After going 1-4 to start the season, with four straight losses in Florida, they lost two the rest of the way. The Mavs did not lose a game in the month of May, outscoring opponents 92-18 over that nine game stretch. In addition to the state title, senior standout Evan Hankins (Tennessee) was named VISAA DI Player of the Year. Like St. John's, Miller School is locked into their position in the Power 25, as our staff does not see a path for a team to jump them at any point the rest of the way. Their schedule was arguably the hardest schedule of any team in the state and they handled business inside of VA/DC.

+ Because there was a two week break from rankings, there has been some significant movement throughout the Power 25. We have two teams moving into the rankings, one that has spend a large majority of the season in the rankings in some capacity and the other making their debut. Highland School has been up and down in the rankings, being as high as #5 to start the season and as low as #21 two weeks ago. The Hawks turned it up a notch in the playoffs and coasted their way to their second VISAA DII title, ultimately vaulting them back into the ranks after a strong finish. The Riverbend Bears make their way into the rankings for the first time all season. Coach Labrusciano has his team playing their best ball all season at the right time. The Bears have not lost since March 26th, reeling off seventeen straight victories to get to 19-4. Riverbend lost all four games in an eight day span in late March, and they do not have a single bad loss. Three of those losses came to teams inside of the current Top 12 of the rankings, with two of those losses being two run losses.

+ There are no longer any undefeated teams in the state. Buckingham sits at 15-1 after a loss to Central (Lunenburg) and Hampton lost their first game last week to Bethel. There are plenty of teams sitting right outside of the Power 25, but with some teams not playing due to weather, or winning their recent games, there has been no significant impact to the backend of the rankings to open up spots for teams like New Kent, Blacksburg, Kettle Run, East Rock, or Hickory to name a few. These next two weeks of regionals will be very big determining factors in how the rankings shake out the rest of the year.

+ To wrap up our weekly notes, this year we will unveil a final rankings release on Thursday June 19th. This release will rank the Top 50 teams across the state and give some detailed analysis into their season, as well as some reasoning as to why they finished where they did. Be on the lookout for that release, as well as our final regular Power 25 on Monday June 2nd.
