Vancouver Spring Invite: Quick Hits

Jaxson Smith-Peterson
Lead Scout, Western Canada

On Wednesday, May 28th, the Prep Baseball British Columbia staff hosted the Vancouver Spring Invite hosted at Parkgate Park in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

This sold-out event featured roughly 26 prospects in the 2025 - 2029 classes and it was the final chance for players to showcase themselves before our staff begins creating rosters for our marquee national events... The Canadian Future Games team (2027/2028 prospects) and Canada's Senior Future Games team (2026 prospects). Players attending the event also qualify to be selected for other marquee events including the Pacific Northwest Games (WA), Super Sophomore Games (OR) and more!

All player ran through a full workout that included batting practice and bullpens captured on our TrackMan. Over the next several days we'll be highlighting top performers from the event within our post-event analysis. Stay locked into our social media channels over the next several days as we continue to push out video, leaderboards and more.

Earlier this week, we began our post-event coverage within our Statistical Analysis, Pitching Data Dive and Hitting Data Dive articles. Today, we will conclude our post-event coverage as we provide scouting notes and video on five standouts from Wednesday's showcase.

Caine Fahrni SS / C / Killarney Secondary, BC / 2026

Our staff got an up-close look at Fahrni, who’s had a breakout season as part of a talented North Shore Twins squad. He walks around with an athletic 6-foot, 185-pound frame that glides around the infield with ease. His hands are some of the smoothest around with a light lower half and carry across the diamond at 88 mph, showcasing a low slot with arm strength as well. At the plate he’s got plate-coverage, barrel feel and whip through the zone that’s easy to replicate, shooting balls to both gaps with an impressive average of 85.5 exit velocity, and a peak of 95.4. Also worth noting, while he didn’t pitch at the Spring Invite, he’s regularly lived in the upper 80s and into the low 90s. Overall it was an impressive showing for Fahrni, who’s cemented himself as one of the better players across Canada in the 2026 class.

Dylan Bird SS / RHP / Lord Tweedsmuir, BC / 2027

Bird has been on an upward trajectory, showing out as one of the better two-ways at the Spring Invite. Checking in at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, the 2027 grad out of Cloverdale still has room to add size into his frame. At the plate he was strong on his front side, generating backspin to the middle part of the field while reaching a peak exit velocity of 326 feet. On the mound he’s got a good chance to develop. He’s clean with some looseness in his arm, and while he lives 83-84 mph right now there’s clear room for an increase in velocity with maturity. Good day for Bird as he continues to trend in the right direction.

Jeffrey Qi OF / RHP / Sir Winston Churchill Secondary, BC / 2026

Arguably the most athletic showing we had at the Spring Invite came from Jeffrey Qi, a 2026 graduate out of the UBC Thunder program. Qi started off the day by running a 6.95 before stringing together one of the better rounds of batting practice. At 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, he’s a simple mover with wiry strength, staying consistently up the middle while reaching a peak exit velocity of 92.7 mph and max carry distance of 346 feet. We’ll continue to check in on Qi as he adds size and strength, but overall strong performance.

Jackson Sleeman OF / C / Magee Secondary School, BC / 2029

One of the younger players to stand out at the Spring Invite was 2029 graduate Jackson Sleeman, a Whalley product who joins a talented list of younger players from that program. What separated him was his swing. Commonly lacking some strength from that age group, Sleeman didn’t look out of place on the big field. He took quality swings (with a wood bat), generating solid contact from a flat plane while shooting line drives to both sides of the field on a consistent basis, reaching a peak distance of 268 feet, while keeping the ratio between his max and average exit velocity narrow. Already with a swing that stands out, it’ll be interesting to see how Sleeman performs as we watch him develop over time.

Kolton Ogawa RHP / OF / North Surrey Secondary School, BC / 2028

Our last pitcher of the day was a quality 2028 arm out of the North Shore Lions program. Standing 5-foot-11, 160-pounds, this was the first look our staff got at Ogawa, who stood out as a relative unknown prior to the event. Showcasing exclusively as a pitcher, he’s got a deceptive delivery as he gets down the mound, living 78-81 mph while flashing feel for a curveball (2300+) in the 62-64 mph range. It’ll be some time before we see what Ogawa’s got in the tank, but our first impression of him was a good one as he’s got the frame to move faster and see gains in his velocity over the next couple of years.
