2025 WIAA 2A & 1A State Tournaments - Top Contenders and Staff Picks

Dylan Grenz
Associate Scout

The WIAA will host the 2A and 1A state tournaments at various sites across the state this Saturday, May 24th. Teams will compete in the opening rounds, in hopes of advancing on to the state semifinal and final games next weekend on Friday, May 30th and Saturday, May 31st.

1A and 2A will host their games at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham, with 16 total teams in each state bracket at this point.

Below are previews of some of the top contending teams in each classification, prospects to keep an eye on, and our staff picks for the champions in each classification.

2A

Top Contenders

#1 Anacortes

The Seahawks enter the 2A state tournament as the one seed after a 21-4 season to this point, winning an incredible 20 games in a row after dropping 4 out of 5 games early. Anacortes has carried this momentum and currently sits at #12 in our Power 25 Rankings. Seniors Bo Mager and Jake Andrew lead the way atop the lineup, but they've gotten contributions throughout the order. They'll face 16 seed Aberdeen in their first game on Saturday before a potential second round matchup with either East Valley or North Kitsap that could cause trouble. Anacortes hopes to advance to in Bellingham, where they would be close to home for a potential semifinal matchup.

#2 Bainbridge

Perhaps no team has a better duo of arms than Bainbridge, who boast a pair of D-1 commits in McCrea Curfman and Trey Thompson. If both are locked in, it could line up perfectly with the 2-game a day format of the playoffs. The 19-4 Spartans have won their last 7 games heading into the state tournament. Juniors AJ Larsen and Will Rohrbacher can also impact a game in a big way. They'll face a 15-seed Fife team that has had a great spring themselves, and features multiple seniors with college commitments. Pitching depth and timely hitting will be the key to Bainbridge potentially making a deep run.

#3 Selah

The 13th ranked team in our Power 25 Rankings, Selah enters state at 21-2, one of the best records regardless of classification in the state. Their season is highlighted by wins over fellow 2A state teams Othello and East Valley to close their season. Sophomore Braxton Young is generating a ton of buzz, while the pitching as a whole has been strong in the latter half of the spring. The Vikings could face a really tough test in 14-seed Cedarcrest if junior Carter Smith is on the mound, however Selah has shown the ability to explode on offense at different points this season.

#4 WF West

The Bearcats enter the state tournament at 21-3, and have been one of the strongest 2A sides all spring. WF West impressed at the Baseballism PNW Kickoff Classic attended by Prep Baseball in Vancouver, and have carried that momentum all season. Connor Coleman is a great arm that has returned from injury, while seniors Deacon Meller and Ross Kelley lead the way atop the lineup. WF West will face Chief Sealth in the first round before a potential rematch with Othello, whom the Bearcats defeated earlier this season.

1A

Top Contenders

#1 Seton Catholic

The top-ranked 1A side both in tournament seeding and in Prep Baseball's power rankings, Seton Catholic comes in to state with a 21-2 record, with their only losses coming against 3A Prairie and 1A La Center. Portland commit and Future Games alum Teddy Wieczorek has great bat-to-ball skills in the leadoff spot, while multi-sport athlete Ryker Ruelas is a big offensive threat as well. Kolton Gesser is another key player for the Cougars. Gesser shut down a tough La Center side in their most recent game leading into state. Seton Catholic will face 16 seeded Zillah in their first round and look to have a favorable draw, in hopes of reaching the semifinals and beyond.

#2 Cedar Park Christian

Prep Baseball staff saw Cedar Park Christian come away with an impressive victory earlier this spring, where the Eagles showed why they should have a real shot to contend for a 1A title. They'll face 15 seeded Castle Rock in their first round matchup. At 19-4, Cedar Park Christian has gotten contributions from the top of their lineup consistently. Catcher Grady Gallagher and Nathan Welch have been on-base machines. Lyal Viers is a nice two-way piece, running his fastball into the low 80's earlier this season. The Eagles have put up at least 6 runs in each of their last two games, and if this can continue they should have a real shot to advance to Bellingham.

#3 La Center

La Center has a weapon that very few teams have in top arm Justin Fuller. The senior can run his fastball into the low 90's and is the clear-cut best arm in 1A if in the strike zone. The Wildcats have plenty of talent apart from Fuller as well, which they have used to propel them to a 19-4 record. Infielder Caden Taylor and outfielder Gunnar Schockelt are bats to watch heading into the state tournament. Pitching beyond Fuller may well be the key for La Center, who will face 14 seeded Colville in their first round matchup. Expect the Wildcats to continue stacking quality wins as they have done all season, with a real shot to make a deep tournament run.

#5 Overlake/Bear Creek

The defending 1A state champions from a season ago may have a lower seed coming into 2025, but are still a dangerous side with many returning players that could contribute to another deep run. Senior Max Bieber is a physical bat and arm, while sophomore Brendan Winkler has upside to dominate through this tournament. The key for the 16-6 Growls will be finding a way against potential higher seeds, teams that they have struggled to best to this point. Overlake has three losses to Cedar Park Christian and one loss to La Center. The Growls will face King's Way Christian in their first round matchup this weekend.
