NCHSAA Baseball Postseason Preview

After twelve weeks of intense competition, travel, and standout performances, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has reached its Regional Finals—the Final Four of each classification. Each Regional Final consists of a best-of-three series, with the higher-seeded team hosting Game 1 and, if necessary, Game 3. The winners will advance to the NCHSAA State Championship Series, scheduled for Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, at a neutral site.

Below is an overview of each Regional Final, along with staff predictions for the State Championship matchups.

NCHSAA 1A Tournament

East Region Finals

(3) Perquimans County (23-5) vs. (1) Voyager Academy (24-2)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 6:00 PM — Perquimans County HS
  • Game 2: Friday, 5/23 at 7:00 PM — Voyager Academy (Durham Athletic Park)
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 5/24 — Voyager Academy (Durham Athletic Park)

West Region Finals

(15) Eastern Randolph (15-12-1) vs. (5) Uwharrie Charter Academy (16-11)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 6:00 PM — Uwharrie Charter
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 7:00 PM — Eastern Randolph HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Friday, 5/23 at 7:00 PM — Uwharrie Charter

Staff Notes:

  • Perquimans has played a challenging schedule, in an area where the travel can create issues, or make a team stronger. There have been a couple of games where the Pirates have been handled, but the mark of a champion is how they bounce back and the Pirates have answered the bell throughout 2025.
  • Voyager Academy has had a strong year, taking their only losses in back to back games in mid-April. The offensive can be explosive, but it has been the complimentary game that makes them the favorite in this series. The Vikings tend to get the performance necessary in any type of game.
  • Understanding how to navigate the state playoff tournament is an art form. Uwharrie is the two-time defending 1A State Champion. The Eagles have built their schedule to prepare for this time of year, playing several teams that have captured state titles already, or are still playing in the NCHSAA Regional Finals. The lineup has some depth, but pitching and defense lead the path for the Eagles.
  • Eastern Randolph has been up and down throughout the 2025 season, but when it has mattered most, the Wildcats have gotten some big performances. The schedule may have set them up to handle adversity and thrive throughout their May run.

Predictions:

  • Brandon Hall: East – Voyager Academy in 3 | West – Uwharrie Charter in 3
  • Patrick Johnson: East – Perquimans in 3 | West – Uwharrie Charter in 2
  • Zach Boraski: East – Voyager Academy in 2 | West – Uwharrie Charter in 2

NCHSAA 2A Tournament

East Region Finals

(13) Midway (22-7) vs. (6) South Lenoir (21-3)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 7:30 PM — South Lenoir HS
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 7:00 PM — Midway HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 5/24 at 7:30 PM — South Lenoir

West Region Finals

(7) West Stanly (22-6) vs. (2) East Rutherford (26-0)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 7:00 PM — East Rutherford HS
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 7:00 PM — West Stanly HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 5/24 at 12:00 PM — East Rutherford

Staff Notes:

  • South Lenoir has a solid mix of upperclass and underclass talent that has kept the Blue Devils balanced throughout the year. Dominant at times throughout the year, South Lenoir is averaging 10 runs per game and only allowing 3.21 runs per game.
  • The Raiders have been knocking on this door for a couple of years. The culture at Midway has built an expectation that they will be in the hunt for a run in May. This group has now reached the Regional Finals, winning in a multitude of ways. The Raiders are at their best when the pitching and defense is giving the offense some time to get the ball rolling.
  • East Rutherford reached the Regional Final in 2024 and lost, in a great series vs. Burns HS. The Cavs are back in 2025 and seem to have been on a mission, running the table to this point, outsourcing opponents 235 - 33. The Cavs are the team to beat and have had a target on them for most of the year. To this point they have handled expectations well… Two more wins gets them one step further than in 2024.
  • The Colts have built a very good schedule and have been rewarded. Throughout 2025, they saw high level arms, bats, and teams. East Rutherford is very good but West Stanly has seem similar challenges in 2025. Lookout if West Stanly jumps out early and can apply some pressure, while playing their game of stable, fundamental baseball.

Predictions:

  • Brandon Hall: East – South Lenoir in 3 | West – East Rutherford in 2
  • Patrick Johnson: East – South Lenoir in 2 | West – East Rutherford in 2
  • Zach Boraski: East – Midway in 3 | West – East Rutherford in 3

NCHSAA 3A Tournament

East Region Finals

(2) Terry Sanford (25-5) vs. (1) J.H. Rose (25-3)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 6:00 PM — J.H. Rose (Guy Smith Stadium)
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 6:00 PM — Terry Sanford HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Friday, 5/23 at 6:00 PM — J.H. Rose

West Region Finals

(7) North Davidson (16-13) vs. (5) North Lincoln (19-8)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 7:00 PM — North Lincoln HS
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 7:00 PM — North Davidson HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 5/24 at 7:00 PM — North Lincoln

Staff Notes:

  • J.H. Rose is a very complete team with a ton of depth. Their ability to mix and match on the mound is bolstered by the depth of the offense. Rose dropped two games to rival DH Conley, but they have run through the schedule while working to challenge the roster. In a matchup that seems tight, and the stats tells us will be tight, look for little things to have a chance to separate the Rampants.
  • Terry Sanford has become accustomed to making runs in May. There have been years it has been older players, and years the younger guys have led the way. In 2025, the Bulldogs have a great mix of veteran and newcomers contributing to the success of the squad. When the top of this lineup gets rolling, the Bulldogs can score in bunches.
  • North Lincoln is another one of those clubs where the culture has built an expectation of begin ready to go as May comes around. The Knights took a bit of time to find their style and the consistency needed to compete at a high level, but they have it now. Use to being in tight games, they will be right at home in the final innings, needing a clutch play to pull through
  • North Davidson entered 2025 with high expectations. Dropping 9 of their first 10 games was not the start they envisioned. While the schedule was challenging, the talent was not producing in a way it can… Fast forward to May and the Knights have gone 15-4 down the stretch and could be poised for one of the biggest turn arounds in the state’s history

Predictions:

  • Brandon Hall: East – J.H. Rose in 3 | West – North Davidson in 2
  • Patrick Johnson: East – J.H. Rose in 3 | West – North Lincoln in 3
  • Zach Boraski: East – J.H. Rose in 2 | West – North Davidson in 2

NCHSAA 4A Tournament

East Region Finals

(4) Corinth Holders (25-3) vs. (3) Laney (23-4)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 6:00 PM — Laney HS
  • Game 2: Thursday, 5/22 at 6:00 PM — Corinth Holders HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 5/24 — Laney HS (TBA)

West Region Finals

(3) T.C. Roberson (23-5) vs. (1) Cuthbertson (25-4)

Schedule:

  • Game 1: Tuesday, 5/20 at 6:30 PM — Cuthbertson HS
  • Game 2: Date/Time TBA — T.C. Roberson HS
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Date/Time TBA — Cuthbertson HS

Staff Notes:

  • Corinth Holders had to win on back-to-back nights in Rounds 3 and 4 to get to the Regional Final. Some teams may struggle with how to work their pitching after two tight games and a short turn-around. The Pirates have depth on the bump. The overall pitching matchups, and how they fall could be very intriguing. Do we get Briggs McKenzie vs. Laney ace TJ Ziermann? If not, can each ace take their game and get us to a game 3.
  • As Laney’s offense goes, so go their chances. Both teams have seen some gaps in games with run scoring, but both have pitched it and played defense at a fairly high level. More importantly, both Laney and Corinth have shown an ability to stay in the moment, play the pitch in front of them and trust that in the end the game will be with in range to capture. If either offense can jump out early, that will be a big advantage, applying some pressure with a state championship within site.
  • TC Roberson has sat on top of the Prep Baseball NC Power 25 for most of the year. A small bump in the road in their final series with Asheville HS had a very hot DH Conley team jump ahead… The defending state champions have an extremely deep lineup and will pressure the Cuthbertson pitching staff throughout this series. From a pitching standpoint Roberson has a ton of looks and different arms. Cuthbertson will push this staff unlike any offense has in 2025.
  • Cuthbertson has been building to make a May run for a couple of years now. The offense has depth and some quick strike ability, mixed with an ability to execute portions of the game. They will look to put as much pressure on the Rams as possible, giving their pitching staff some breathing room to operate. This should be a great series with two very good teams vying for a trip to the State Championship series.

Predictions:

  • Brandon Hall: East – Corinth Holders in 3 | West – T.C. Roberson in 2
  • Patrick Johnson: East – Corinth Holders in 3 | West – T.C. Roberson in 2
  • Zach Boraski: East – Corinth Holders in 2 | West – T.C. Roberson in 3
