Group 4 State Tournament: Day 1 Wrap Up

Day one of the NJSIAA State Tournament wrapped up with plenty of excitement across all brackets. Each bracket featured eight games, narrowing the field down to just eight teams remaining in each. The opening round delivered its fair share of upsets, as lower-seeded teams rose to the occasion and knocked off favorites. There were also standout performances from both teams and individual players, setting the tone for what promises to be an intense and competitive tournament. The action picks back up tomorrow with the quarterfinal round, as the remaining teams look to take one step closer to the ultimate goal: winning three more games and being crowned state champion. Today, we will be taking a look at the results from yesterday's group 4 games.

NORTH 1 BRACKET

+ In North 1, Belleville topped fourth seeded Union City, 11-0. Crismel Deleon had two hits and Asyden Carrero drove in two for Belleville. 10th seeded Hackensack beat 7th seeded West Orange, 6-2. 

NORTH 2 BRACKET

+ In North 2, ninth seeded Bridgewater-Raritan advanced with a 5-2 win over eighth seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Kellan Komline went 6 IP for BR, allowing just two hits and striking out 10. 11th seeded Ferris topped sixth seeded Watchung Hills, 3-1. Ferris’ Jayden Mercado went 6IP allowing just three hits and struck out nine.

CENTRAL BRACKET

+ In the Central bracket, 12th seeded Montgomery beat fifth seeded New Brunswick, 14-2. Seton Hall commit John Donohue went 3.2 IP and struck out nine in a mercy rule shortened game. 9th seeded Hillsborough beat 8th seeded Freehold Township and 11th seeded Franklin upset sixth seeded East Brunswick, 2-1. Finally, 10th seeded Manalapan beat seventh seeded Monroe, 2-0. ‘27 Ben Faigin struck out 11 in five innings in a hard luck losing effort.

SOUTH BRACKET

+ In the South, Cherry Hill East upset fifth seeded Lenape, 1-0. 2027 Mike Fekete went six strong allowing just two hits for CHE. 14th seeded Gloucester Tech beat third seeded Rancocas Valley, 3-2. Notre Dame commit Andrew Valay struck out seven in five innings for GT. 10th seeded Egg Harbor Township upended 7th seeded Central Regional, 6-1.
