With the WIAA regular season nearing its close, our staff has spent the spring getting extensive looks at the state’s next wave of talent. In this Underclass Scout Blog, we’re spotlighting a number of standout freshmen and sophomores who’ve made early impressions across the 2025 spring season.

From known names to emerging prospects, this group represents a promising future for Wisconsin baseball — and with the updated Class of 2027 rankings set to drop tomorrow, it’s the perfect time to highlight the players already making noise at the varsity level.

CATCHERS

Grady Cheever, C, Germantown, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top players in the state’s sophomore class. Standing at an athletic and lean 6-foot-1, 153 pounds with clear room to add to the frame. Starting behind the plate for a second straight season and hitting fourth for Germantown. Cheever is one of the top catchers in the area with natural and quiet actions, has caught some of the top arms in the state the past two years with confidence. At the plate, the switch-hitter performed from both sides during this look, collecting hits from both sides, showing feel for the barrel from both sides with growing feel to impact the baseball more consistently. - Josh Fields, April 5, 2025

Logan Hagman, C, Hudson, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top sophomores in the Midwest, standing at a physical 6-foot, 197 pounds with strength throughout the frame. Started behind the plate and hit fourth for Hudson, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles, a home run and scored three runs. At the plate, the right-handed hitter routinely finds the barrel and drives the baseball hard and in the air with authority. Easy and simple swing with easy power, quiet working in sync throughout with strong and loose wrists to pair with a natural hand trigger. Defensively behind the plate, Hagman is a strong receiver and athlete out of the crouch with more than enough arm strength to continue to provide strong defense moving forward. - Josh Fields, April 18, 2025

Uncommitted, one of the top prospects in the state’s sophomore class and in the Midwest. Standing at a physical and strong 6-foot, 197 pounds. At the plate, the right-handed hitter is one of the top performers across the WIAA, hitting both for a high average while driving the ball with authority having amassed 16 extra base hits on the year already. Advanced feel to hit, with a natural hand trigger while working in rhythm, consistently finding the barrel no matter the location with plenty of strength behind each swing. Defensively behind the plate, Hagman is an athletic defender behind the plate, with strong and quiet hands as a receiver. - Josh Fields, May 13, 2025

Ethan Miller, C, Slinger, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top catchers in the state’s sophomore class. Compact strength at his 5-foot-10, 196 pound frame. Miller hit clean up while handling the catching behind the plate, collecting two hits across three at bats with an RBI, walking once. At the plate, the right-handed hitter took some of the better at-bats in the lineup, flashing bat-to-ball traits while using the entire field throughout the game. Defensively Miller is a steady defender with catch and throw traits that can easily translate at the next level. - Josh Fields, April 12, 2025

Cullen Roell, C/UTL, West Bend West, 2027
Uncommitted, a follow sophomore in the state, listed at 6-foot, 175-pounds with room to add to the frame. Started behind the plate and hit sixth for West Bend West, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. At the plate, the left-handed hitter takes a direct path to the baseball flashing bat-to-ball traits to pair. Behind the plate, Roell is a quality receiver with strong hands while looking like an athlete behind the plate and out of the crouch. - Josh Fields, May 24, 2025

Alex Solberg, C/DH, New Richmond, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the strongest right-handed hitters in the state’s sophomore class. Listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds with strength through the frame. Hit in the middle of the order and was the designated hitter for both games, going 3-for-7 at the plate. From the right-side, Solberg swings a powerful and strong right-handed bat with loose and strong wrists taking a flat path through the zone. Solberg is a name to follow as he continues his prep career as one of the stronger right-handed hitters in the class. - Josh Fields, May 13, 2025

Jack Spielmann, C, Milton, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top sophomores in the state’s sophomore class and in the Midwest, standing at 6-foot-1, 176 pounds with lean strength and room to add to the frame. At the plate, the left-handed hitter collected two RBIs. In the first inning, he got Milton on the board early with a line-drive single to center field. He features a smooth, fluid swing with consistent barrel control. Behind the plate, he is a clean blocker with athleticism out of the crouch with clean and steady hands with a strong arm behind the dish. - Michael Anderson, May 2, 2025

INFIELDERS

Eli Bauler, 1B, Monona Grove, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the strongest bats in the state’s sophomore class, one of the strongest left-handed hitters in the class standing at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds. At the plate, he collected two hits and drove in two runs. His first hit was an RBI single to right field in the third inning, followed by another RBI single to center field in the sixth. He features a controlled, rhythmic swing with strong barrel action and showcases athletic movements in the field. - Michael Anderson, May 2, 2025

Cayden Burtness, INF, Pewaukee, 2027
Uncommitted. Trim 5-foot-7, 150-pound frame with room for added strength in the future. Batted fifth and started at second base for the Pirates. Burtness especially stood out with his defense in this look; showing advanced and highly-athletic actions up the middle both pre-game and in-game, while pairing that with a confident glove. He also showed above-average range for the position. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has a middle of the field approach and looks to keep the ball on a line. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk. A name to continue to follow in the state’s sophomore class. - Tyler Defibaugh, April 12, 2025

Danny Flor, 2B, Oconomowoc, 2027
A follow player in the state’s sophomore class, Flor, would have a solid day at the plate during Oconomowoc's Saturday matchup, going 1-for-2 with an opposite-field double, 1 RBI, one run scored, and one walk. The right-handed bat presents a wider base, utilizing a medium stride to get into a position of launch with quick hands and a fluid path through contact. Presenting a 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame, Flor is continuing to add strength and athleticism to his present profile. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

Brady Helms, 2B, Hartford, 2027

Helms would hit out of the cleanup spot for his Hartford squad during their first game Saturday, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. The right-handed bat showcased a simple all-field approach with a balanced base and medium stride that allowed the sophomore to consistently get into a position of launch. Athleticism and polish are obvious parts of Helms' profile, making him a must-know name in Wisconsin's 2027 class. 6-foot, 174-pound frame. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

Uncommitted, standing at an athletic 6-foot, 173 pounds. Hit three hole and played second base for the Orioles going 2-for-4 on the day with a double. At the plate, the right-handed hitter takes a direct path to the baseball and consistently makes contact no matter the location in the zone. Showing increasing feel to leverage the ball in the air, something that can continue to tick up with added strength. - Josh Fields, May 5, 2025

James Radabaugh, 1B, Waunakee, 2027

James Radabagh possesses notable strength and power in his 6-foot-1, 207-pound frame. With two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, Radabagh crushed a home run to right field, extending Waunakee’s lead to 12-4. At the plate, he swings with a smooth, free-and-easy left-handed stroke and shows a strong feel for the barrel. Defensively at first base, he displays good instincts around the bag and soft hands. As just a sophomore, Radabagh has already found success—and his ceiling remains incredibly high. - Michael Anderson, April 14, 2025

Kyle Rogosienski, MIF, Muskego, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top sophomores in the Midwest, standing at an athletic and twitchy 5-foot-11, 163 pounds with room to add to the frame. Started at shortstop and hit leadoff for Muskego, going 2-for-5, one hit came off of one of the top left-handers in the class, with three RBIs and a stolen base. At the plate, the left-handed hitter swings an upside bat with feel to go the other way. Defensively, Rogosienski is an athletic defender with range and arm strength to stick on the left-side. - Josh Fields, April 19, 2025

Cooper Sievert, SS, Wisconsin Lutheran, 2027
Sievert would go 1-for-3 with a 2-run home run during Wisconsin Lutheran's first game on Saturday. The right-handed hitter was taking controlled, aggressive swings throughout the game with clear intent in all of his at-bats. A pure gamer who also showed above-average at shortstop, Sievert is a must-know name in Wisconsin's 2027 class. 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with present strength. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

Lucas Quade, INF, New Richmond, 2027
Uncommitted, listed at an athletic 5-foot-9, 155 pound with strength to the frame. Quade came came off the bench in game one and worked two walks across both plate appearances driving in a run and scoring himself before going 1-for-3 in game two with another walk. The bat plays from the right-side, swinging an athletic bat and quick bat while flashing bat-to-ball traits to pair with an advanced approach for a sophomore. Quade is a name to follow sophomore in the western part of the state. - Josh Fields, May 13, 2025

OUTFIELDERS

Carter Fry, CF, Wisconsin Lutheran, 2027
Fry would continue to show a dynamic toolset that makes him one of the most intriguing names in Wisconsin's 2027 class. At the plate, the right-handed hitter would go 2-for-3 with a double and home run. With wiry strength and explosive hands through contact, Fry has the makings of a high-leverage bat. Additionally, the sophomore has evident acumen in center field with above-average range and routes thanks to his top-of-the-scale speed. A ton of projection in his 5-foot-10, 148-pound frame. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

Camden Glusick, OF, Sun Prairie East, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top performing sophomores in the state. Standing at 6-foot, 165 pounds with clear room to add to an already athletic and strong frame. Started in center field and hit in the three-hole for the Cardinals going 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and four RBIs on the day. At the plate, from the right-side Glusick has similar barrel feel as his older brother, drove the ball with more authority finding both gaps throughout the day and driving the run production. Defensively the outfielder made every play in the outfield taking aggressive routes and attacking the baseball. - Josh Fields, April 5, 2025

Uncommitted, a follow bat in the state’s sophomore class, standing at a lean 6-foot, 165 pound frame with room to add. Glusick started in center field and hit third in the lineup, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and a walk. The right-handed hitter has shown repeated feel for the barrel, driving the ball to all fields across multiple looks this spring showing advanced bat-to-ball traits and feel to backspin the baseball. Defensively the outfielder has enough range and speed to play in all three spots, making plays in both gaps throughout the game. - Josh Fields, April 22, 2025

Kingston Grisolono, OF, Kewaskum, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top sophomore’s in the state, currently listed at a physical 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Grisolono got the start in center field and hit third for Kewaskum, going 1-for-2 on the day with a double, two walks an RBI and a run scored while adding two stolen bases. Impressive look at the plate, quiet and patient approach, rarely expanding while never swinging and missing in the zone. Natural and hitterish look in the box, working in rhythm and with strength behind each swing. An asset as a base runner, with feel to take the extra bag and stealing both bases almost uncontended. Defensively the athlete and foot speed are enough for all three spots to pair with a strong arm that adds to the profile defensively. - Josh Fields, May, 24, 2025

Dillon Herling, CF, Franklin, 2027
Dillon Herling showcases impressive athleticism, having previously run a 6.77 in the 60-yard dash. At the plate against Nicolet, Herling reached base in every at-bat, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs. In the bottom of the fourth, he drove in two runs with a double to left field. He features a fluid swing and quick bat speed. Defensively, he covered plenty of ground in center field and displayed a quick, accurate arm. The sophomore has a high ceiling and continues to project well. - Michael Anderson, April 19, 2025

Chace Staude, CF/SS, Kettle Moraine, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top athlete’s the state’s sophomore class, twitchy athlete listed at 5-foot-11, 163 pounds with clear room to add to the frame. Started at shortstop and hit leadoff for the Lasers, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. The left-handed hitter swings an upside bat with twitch, definitely showing an “A” swing throughout the game while taking a more simple and direct hack with two strikes. Defensively at shortstop, Staude is an athlete with steady and capable actions, although a natural center fielder Staude shows the ability to play both at any given time. One of the top sophomores in the state and a name to continue to monitor moving forward. - Josh Fields, April 11, 2025

TWO-WAYS

Ira Hilbelink, RHP/OF, Cedar Grove-Belgium, 2027
Uncommitted, a rising player in the state’s sophomore class, one of the top players in the region with real two-way upside, athletic with strength, standing at 5-foot-11, 188 pounds. Hilbelink started on the mound and struck out 11 batters across five innings, allowing two runs and walking four. Athletic mover on the mound with an easy and controlled delivery. The arm action stands out, clean, low effort with whip throwing each pitch out of the same window. Hilbelink ran his fastball up to 89 mph, sitting 85-88 mph with life out of the hand, spinning a sharp and big breaking ball in the low-70s earning swing and miss in and out of the zone. Flashing a running changeup that he would throw to both handed batters, sitting 79-81 mph. - Josh Fields, April 28, 2025

Cooper Schaefgen, INF/RHP, Oconomowoc, 2027
Louisville commit, a top player in the state’s sophomore class. Listed at 6-foot-1, 219 pounds with proportional strength to the build. Hit third and started on the mound for the Raccoons. One of the top pure hitters in the Midwest, Schaefgen routinely finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority. Driving a couple of balls to the warning track in center field, only coming up with one hit to show for it however. Simple and balanced swing from the right-side with easy power and natural bat-to-ball traits that only add to the profile offensively. - Josh Fields, April 12, 2025

One of the top performers in Wisconsin this spring, Schaefgen, would take quality at-bats throughout the day thanks to a patient approach that would result in him going 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs, two walks, and one run scored. The right-handed hitter would take controlled, intentful swings while hitting from an athletic wider base with a short stride that allowed him to get the barrel out front with a direct bat path. Schaefgen would also show well on the mound Saturday, throwing a singular inning out of relief and collecting all three outs via strikeout. The fastball would sit 84-86 and was paired with a mid-70s breaker with 12/6 shape. Strong 6-foot-1, 219-pound frame. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

PITCHERS

Eli Dreier, RHP, Wisconsin Lutheran, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top right-handers in the state’s sophomore class, standing at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds with strength to the frame. Dreier came on in relief for the final inning and provided a loud look, striking out two batters during the frame and running his fastball up to 91 mph multiple times with carry and life through the zone. Attacking hitters with a heavy barrage of fastballs and spinning a late breaking and bigger breaking ball off the fastball in the low-70s. - Josh Fields, April 19, 2025

Gossard Gillaspie, RHP, Waterford, 2027
Possessing a long, projectable 6-foot-5, 195-pound frame, Gossard Gillaspie started on the mound for Waterford in their matchup against South Milwaukee. He threw three and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs, no hits, and just one walk while striking out seven. His fastball sat at 77–80 mph, complemented by a 67–70 mph slider. According to his coach, his fastball is noticeably firmer than it was the year before, as he continues to develop. Mechanically, he makes good use of his long levers, employing a high leg lift and long stride while throwing from a sidearm slot. - Michael Anderson, April 19, 2025

Carter Gordon, RHP, Germantown, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top right-handers in the state’s sophomore class, also one of the state’s top offensive linemen on the gridiron. Physical and athletic 6-foot-4 frame, durable with present strength as well. Got the ball to start the game for Germantown on a cold afternoon where the right-hander allowed one baserunner across five no-hit innings striking out nine of 16 batters. An athlete and competitor on the mound, working from a fluid delivery that he has feel to repeat in sync while pounding the zone and challenging hitters constantly. Two pitch mix in this look, mostly fastballs sitting 88-91 mph, locating throughout the zone with ease, Gordon would mix in a firm breaking ball with 11-5 action early. At the plate, Gordon is a strong middle-of-the-order bat with feel to elevate the ball with impact, easy bat strength from the right-side with natural feel for the barrel. - Josh Fields, April 4, 2025

Maddux Hermus, RHP, Kimberly, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top sophomores in the state, set to debut in the next rankings update, standing at 5-foot-10, 189 pounds with strength throughout the frame. Hermus came on in relief of Deering with a loud look out of the ‘pen striking out two batters across 1.2 innings on the mound, walking two. In the zone with three pitches, the fastball reached 86 mph with running action, spun a sweeping breaking ball in the low-70s to pair with a running changeup at 76-78 mph. - Josh Fields, April 17, 2025

Mason Horn, LHP, Muskego, 2027
Uncommitted, a rising left-hander in the state’s sophomore class. Standing at 6-foot, 167 pounds with clear room for added strength. Came on in relief, pitching through some traffic, while striking out three batters across the inning. An athlete on the mound, with feel to repeat while filling up the zone with two pitches. The fastball plays with life out of the hand, reaching the mid-80s at times while locating the pitch throughout the zone. Horn spins a low-70s breaking ball out of the same window while working off the fastball. A high follow left-hander in the state with feel to pitch. - Stephaune Haylock, April 5, 2025

Andrew Horwath, LHP, Hartford, 2027
Horwath would come out of the bullpen for his Hartford squad, working two innings of scoreless baseball, collecting three strikeouts along the way. The left-handed arm showed a solid two-pitch mix that kept hitters off balance throughout his outing thanks to a deceptive 3/4s release, with an upper-70-low-80s fastball and an upper-60s breaking ball. 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame. - Charles Frady, April 19, 2025

Alex Johnson, RHP, Eau Claire Memorial, 2027
Uncommitted, a rising name in the state’s sophomore class. Standing at 6-foot-1, 168 pounds with room to add to his frame. Johnson came on in relief of Jesperson and tossed the final two innings where he struck out three batters, walking one. Mostly two pitches in the look, locating both in the zone throughout this look, the fastball sat 80-82 mph with feel to locate the baseball throughout the zone. Went to a 69-71 mpg breaking ball that worked off the fastball with feel to locate in the zone. - Josh Fields, May 6, 2025

Cal Schneider, LHP, New Berlin Eisenhower, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top performing pitchers in the state regardless of class, slated to rise in the next rankings update as one of the top left-handed pitchers in the class. Schneider got the ball to start the game and struck out nine batters across six shutout innings, walking two. The projectable 6-foot-1 left-hander routinely worked in the zone with his entire arsenal. Known for his pitchability the lefty worked in the low-80s T84 mph with his fastball with two secondaries, a curveball and changeup that play off each other with bigger action to each pitch. One of the top left-handers in the region with a history of performing in front of our staff. - Josh Fields, May 6, 2025

Anthony Sirocchi, RHP, Westosha Central, 2027
Uncommitted, a rising sophomore is the state, expected to debut in the next rankings update, listed at 6-foot, 180 pounds with room to add to the frame. Coming in as a reliever and throwing the final three innings. During his outing, he allowed no runs on just one hit and two walks while striking out four. He showed feel for the zone, featuring a fastball with carry through the top of the zone that kept hitters off balance throughout. - Michael Anderson, April 10, 2025

Mark Susa, LHP, Hudson, 2027
Uncommitted, expected to rise in the next rankings update as one of the state’s top left-handed pitching prospects. Listed at a long limbed and lean 6-foot-4, 179 pounds with clear room to add to the frame. Susa got the ball game one, and struck out six batters across 5.1 innings in a closely contested game. An athletic on the mound with a simple and easily repeatable delivery, extending down the mound with an athletic and clean arm action. Three pitch mix in this look with a low-80s T84 mph fastball that he located in the zone, confident in a bigger sweeping breaking ball sitting 72-75 mph and flashing a changeup at 75. One of the top left-handers in the state, serving as the ace on one of the top programs in the state as a sophomore. - Josh Fields, May 13, 2025

Lucas Weber, RHP, Whitnall, 2027
Uncommitted, a rising prospect in the state, set to debut in the next rankings update. Standing at 5-foot-9, 168 pounds, Weber is a proportional athlete with room for added strength to the frame. Weber came on to record the final 1.1 innings, retiring the four batters in order, striking out two. Low effort and simple delivery with feel to repeat, landing most of his pitches in the zone. Two pitch mix, the fastball sat 82-84 T85 with life out of the hand and thrown downhill, the breaking ball was firm at 71-74 mph with two plane action that picked up a couple swing and miss. A rising sophomore with an easy and clean arm, name to know moving forward. - Stephaune Haylock, May 5, 2025

Uncommitted, set to debut in the next rankings update, standing at a strong 5-foot-9, 168 pounds with room to add to the frame. Weber came on in relief of Parkinson in the sixth, earning the save over two innings, pitching through some traffic on the basepaths throughout. Working crossfire to the plate, with feel to locate two pitches in the zone, the arm action works uninterrupted and clean with arm speed through release. The fastball worked in the mid-80s T88 mph with life out of the hand and feel to locate to different spots with leverage, spun a low-70s breaking ball out of the same window with feel to locate in the zone. - Josh Fields, April, 19, 2025

Chase Wolter, RHP, Whitefish Bay, 2027
Uncommitted, one of the top performing sophomores in the state. Standing at a lean and wiry 6-foot-1, 175 pound frame with room for added strength. Wolter got the start on the mound and struck out seven batters across three innings. The fastball really plays for Wolter, sitting 84-86 mph with carry, missing multiple bats in the zone and picking up a number of whiffs throughout the outing. The slider was the go-to secondary, playing with bigger sweeping action in the low-70s, locating the pitch around the zone while flashing a firm changeup. - Josh Fields, May 5, 2025

Benjamin Smet-Cooper, 3B, Westosha Central, 2028
Uncommitted, one of the top freshman performers so far this spring, listed at 6-foot, 193 pounds with strength to the frame. At the plate, he delivered a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the fourth, driving in a pair of runs. He’s already homered in each of his first two varsity games this season. Natural power at the plate from the left-hander, showing increasing feel to lift the ball in the air. - Michael Anderson, April 10, 2025

Jeffrey Stefanich, OF, Random Lake, 2028
Uncommitted, a pop-up freshman to follow in the Badger State, standing at 6-foot-1, 150 pounds with clear room to add to the frame. Stefanich played center field and hit sixth in the Random Lake lineup, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. The right-handed hitter takes a direct path to the baseball, staying inside and impacting the baseball outfront showing feel to use the entire field. Defensively the freshman patrolled center field taking aggressive routes to the baseball and looking the part at a potential center fielder at the next level. - Josh Fields, April 28, 2025

Carter Unger, RHP, Kewaskum, 2028
Uncommitted, one of the top freshman in the state, standing at a long limbed and lean 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame with clear room for added physicality. Got the ball to start the game for Kewaskum where he would continue his strong freshman season, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning while finishing with seven strikeouts across 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs. Athlete, clean and easy mover through the delivery, crossfire finish with each pitch coming from a lower slot. The fastball sat in the mid-80s T86 mph throughout and played with bigger running action that only played up from the angle the ball is coming out from. Spinning a low-70s sweeping slider that he flashed feel to throw to either side of the plate. One of the top freshman arms in the state while performing on varsity right away. - Josh Fields, May 24, 2025

Maddex Welzien, INF/RHP, West Bend West, 2028
Uncommitted, another top freshman in the state, standing at a projectable 6-foot, 155 pounds with increasing strength to the frame. Welzien would look the part as an up the middle defender capable of playing either second or shortstop before coming on in relief and tossing the final three scoreless innings striking out four batters. Competitor on the mound, attacking early and often throughout the outing. Two pitch mix with a lively fastball that sits 80-82 mph, with a low-70s breaking ball to pair as his go-to secondary. - Josh Fields, May 24, 2025
