Director's List: Underclass Prospects (2025 LHSAA State Tournament)

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Just like that, the 2025 Louisiana high school baseball season has come to a close. Last week’s LHSAA State Tournament crowned ten champions across all divisions, and the action certainly lived up to the hype—especially with the introduction of the new best-of-three championship series format in Divisions I, II, and III. Five of the six matchups in those divisions went the distance to a decisive Game 3, creating plenty of drama and excitement at McMurry Park.

With the end of another season and another state tournament, we wanted to highlight some of the top underclass (2027 & 2028 class) prospects that we saw in Sulphur, LA last week.

UNDERCLASS PROSPECTS (2027 & 2028 CLASS)

Isaac Boudreaux RHP / 1B / Teurlings Catholic, LA / 2027

The sophomore right-hander got the start for the Rebels in Game 2 of their championship series against E.D. White.  Boudreaux ended up earning the no-decision after tossing 2 innings and allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, and 0 earned runs with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts on 54 pitches (61% strikes).  He worked exclusively from the stretch off the first base side of the rubber and strided across his body slightly, before using a loose & easy arm action to release the ball from a 3/4 slot.  Boudreaux attacked hitters with an 86-89 mph fastball and it came out of his hand effortlessly.  He paired that with a developing 75-77 mph slider with varying shape.  With a long, lean, and projectable 6'4" frame, Boudreaux is a must-see guy this summer ahead of August 1st.

Owen Galley 1B / RHP / Sam Houston, LA / 2027

Galley capped off his sophomore season hoisting the Division I (Non-Select) State Title trophy with his Bronco teammates and he also came away with the Most Outstanding Player award.  The former Jr. Future Gamer started the first game against Live Oak and ended up taking a tough loss after tossing 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.  Even in the losing effort, he still gave the Broncos a quality start and a chance to win the game.  Galley's defensive and offensive efforts, however, were stellar throughout the state tournament and were a big reason for the Broncos success.  He went 3-for-4 at the plate in Game 2 with one of his hits being a walk-off RBI single to right field that sealed Sam Houston's 4-3 comeback win.  Galley then went 1-for-3 in Game 3 with a RBI single to center field that gave the Broncos some extra cushion and a 4-2 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th.  Defensively, he made several outstanding plays at first base that proved to be massive in the overall outcome of the series.

Devyn Downs SS / RHP / Sterlington, LA / 2027

The LSU commit was red-hot at the plate during the Panthers run last week towards another Division III (Non-Select) State Title.  In Game 1, he came through with one of the biggest hits for Sterlington that proved to be a pivotal turning point in the series against Erath.  After starting the game 0-for-3, Downs came to the plate in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded and 1 out and smoked a bases-clearing triple to center field that tied the game at 4-4.  In Game 2, he went 2-for-4 with a double, run batted in, and run scored, before going 2-for-3 with a double in Game 3 to finish the series 5-for-11 with 2 doubles and a triple.

Cole Albert RHP / 3B / Vermilion Catholic, LA / 2028

The former Jr. Future Gamer had delivered all season long for Vermilion Catholic and delivered in the biggest test of his young career last week against Ouachita Christian in the Division IV (Select) State Title game.  Albert earned the win and was named Most Outstanding Player, after tossing a complete-game allowing only 1 earned run with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.  He went after the Eagles hitters with both a four-seam and two-seam fastball.  His four-seamer sat in the 82-85 mph range and he located the pitch well to his glove-side, while his two-seamer stayed in the low-80's and flashed arm-side sink & run.  He paired that with a sweeping 72-74 mph slider and was able to land the pitch for strikes.  As good as Albert was this spring, there's plenty more in the tank as he fills out his 6'4" frame, which is great news for Vermilion Catholic fans because he's an Eagle for another three years.

Grant Vollmer RHP / University Lab, LA / 2027

Long and lean 6'7" 205 lbs. frame with a ton of room to add strength.  Vollmer was one of the more intriguing arms that we saw at last week's LHSAA State Tournament at McMurry Park in Sulphur, LA.  He got the Game 3 start for the Cubs and earned the no-decision after tossing 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts on 95 pitches (58% strikes).  Vollmer worked at a quicker pace through his delivery and strided slightly across his body, which allowed him to hide the ball well.  He used his 6'7" frame to his advantage with a higher release height, which created good downward tilt on the baseball.  His fastball stayed in the 83-86 mph range and got up to 88 mph early, and his 73-74 mph breaking ball was the best that we had seen it with tighter shape.

Kannon Keiser SS / RHP / Sam Houston, LA / 2028

The former Jr. Future Gamer came in relief for the Broncos in Game 3 of their championship series and came through with some big pitches.  Keiser tossed 2 shutout innings and allowed only 1 hit with 2 strikeouts.  Both of his strikeouts came in a crucial moment of the game too.  With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th, Live Oak got runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and had they're top two hitters coming to the plate.  Keiser proceeded to strikeout both Eagle hitters to end their threat and give all the momentum back to Sam Houston.  He and several other young Broncos aced their first state tournament test last week, which should give them all the confidence in the world for the next couple of years, as they'll likely be back in the future.

Grant Oustalet 3B / C / Sam Houston, LA / 2028

The poise and calm demeanor that the former Jr. Future Gamer displayed last week was something that stood out like a sore thumb.  On the biggest and brightest stage last week, Oustalet never flinched, on route to helping the Broncos claim their second State Title in school history and first since 2001.  He played clean defense all week for Sam Houston and made every play that came his way.  On top of that, he came through with some big hits in the series.  He went 1-for-3 in the Broncos Game 1 loss to the Eagles, but his biggest offensive contributions would come the next night.  In a win-or-go home Game 2 against Live Oak, Oustalet went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in.  With Live Oak ahead by a run with 2 outs and runners on 2nd & 3rd in the bottom of the 6th inning, Oustalet connected for a two-strike single to the pull-side that scored the game-tying run for Sam Houston.  They would go on to win that game in the bottom of the 7th on a walk-off single to keep their season alive.  He finished the state tournament off with a 1-for-3 performance in Game 3 to finish the three-game set 4-for-9 (.444).
