Michigan Diamond Notes: May 12-18
Opposing catchers (and pitchers) beware. Kaeden Warfield is tearing up the basepaths for Brandywine.
A quarterback on the football team, Warfield stole 14 bases this past week and now has an astounding 55 on the season.
A catcher and center fielder, Warfield went 8-12 with a pair of doubles, a triple and a home run for the week, scoring 13 runs and driving in eight while also walking three times.
In addition to the 55 steals, Warfield has scored 44 runs. The 6-2 195-pound junior is batting .409 on the season with eight doubles, five triples and three home runs, driving home 24 and reaching on base on walks 13 times.
So who else had big weeks? Read on…
TWO-WAY STANDOUTS
Jack Vargo and Morgan Robar both had six hits during the week, but it was on the mound where the two stood out, each throwing a no-hitter for their respective schools.
Vargo did not allow a hit against Walled Lake Western while Robar was shutting down Gladstone.
A Calvin University commit, Vargo retired nine batters on strikes while allowing two free passes in the seven-inning masterpiece for South Lyon East. The 42nd-rated senior shortstop in Michigan was also strong with the bat, going 6-13 during the week with two doubles, a pair of walks, five RBIs and a stolen base. For the season, Vargo is hitting .392 with a 0.914 OPS.
Robar is a big reason that Negaunee entered the state ratings a week ago and the Miners have now moved up to 19 in Division 3. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked five in the five-inning no-hitter for his third win of the season in three decisions.
A shortstop when not pitching, Robar went 6-17 on the week including a double, with seven RBIs, six runs and six stolen bases. Season totals are now at 29 steals, 27 runs and 26 runs batted in. On the mound, Robar has a 1.29 ERA, fanning 25 and walking 10 in 21.2 innings.
There were a pair of other players also worth noting that came up big at the dish as well as pitching this week.
- Ryan Bosch pitched and hit Fruitport to a 5-3 victory over Spring Lake, the No. 9 Division 2 team in Michigan. Bosch went the distance for the win, allowing one hit and one earned run while fanning nine and walking three. The Niles junior also threw five innings allowing just two hits while striking out nine to push his season number of batters fanned to 55. Throwing a no-hitter is nothing new for Fraser High School’s Manzella, who fired his second of the season with a 15-strikeout, one-walk outing against Lakeview. The 6th-ranked junior RHP in Michigan is now 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 0.962 WHIP, striking out 58 while walking 14 in 35 innings on the hill.
