This weekend, Prep Baseball was in attendance for the conclusion of the Washington HS baseball season, as four 4A sides battled it out at Parker Faller Field in Yakima. The semifinal and state championship matchups had a ton of action, with Lake Washington ultimately capturing a 4A state title. Below are scouting notes on all four 4A teams seen this weekend.

Lake Washington

'25 LHP Shane Johnson (Oregon Commit)
The lefty arm was absolutely on top of his game on the mound in the final start of his high school career, before his start got cut short by one of the weirder sequence of events Prep Baseball has seen in some time. Johnson carved through the lineup of undefeated Puyallup in the semifinal game, going 4 innings of scoreless ball while allowing just 2 hits and striking out 3 batters. The Oregon commit was aggressive in the zone with his FB at 85-88 MPH while mixing in both a CB and SL in the low/mid 70's consistently. Johnson missed barrels for 4 innings before the game was suspended to be played the next morning, due to insufficient lighting at the field. The senior also was in the lineup for the semifinal matchup and delivered a huge blow with a 2-run double off the wall in RF. The experienced arm led the way for the Kangs en route to their well-earned state title.

'26 INF Kane Nishikawa (Uncommitted)
Nishikawa was all over the barrel in both the semifinal and championship matchups, filling up the stat sheet in both contests. The uncommitted junior finished 4 for 8 on the weekend, scoring 4 runs and posting 2 RBI as well. Nishikawa got the LW offense going with a hard-hit RBI single after they fell behind early in the final, and later drove a double in what was a 7-run inning for the Kangs offense. The medium framed athlete held down 3B as well in both contests, making every play that came his way.

'26 OF/LHP Will Cooley (Gonzaga Commit)
Though the plus athlete had a quiet semifinal performance, Cooley stepped up in a huge way in the championship game and was one of the biggest contributors for the Kangs' 4A title. The junior started the title game in CF and made a couple of nice ranging plays on hard-hit line drives. Cooley then transitioned to the mound, where he stopped the early bleeding and threw 2.2 scoreless frames, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 3. The lefty mostly attacked with a low 80's FB, filling up the zone with 75% strikes. The Gonzaga commit also added 2 hits at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run. Cooley's memorable weekend was capped by striking out the final batter to clinch the state title for Lake Washington

'25 OF Brady O'Cain (Uncommitted)
After a slower start to his senior season, O'Cain got hot in a big way in Yakima and was a big part of the Kang offense all weekend. The senior drove in a total of 4 runs across the two games, reaching base 3 total times and scoring 2 runs as well. The senior had a tough break play in the outfield during the championship game, but made up for it with a huge 2-run triple driven to center field later on. The lefty bat had productive AB's and hit to all fields in both contests.

'25 INF Logan Schuster (Olympic College Commit)
In a title game where several Kangs had great offensive days, perhaps no player did more than Schuster, who finished 3 for 3 with 4 RBI, 2 runs and a walk offensively. The medium framed righty bat featured a balanced, line drive approach, shooting the ball to the pull side and up the middle throughout. Schuster also went 1 for 2 with a walk and run scored against Puyallup in the semifinal, and had a couple of nice digs at first base defensively.

'25 INF Gavin Johnson (Arizona Christian Commit)
Johnson, like Schuster, reached base in every plate appearance in the title game for LW, finishing 3/3 with 3 singles and a HBP. The senior featured a direct approach with a shorter bat path that yielded great results all weekend. Before his stellar championship game, Johnson was also a part of LW's breakout first inning against Puyallup, pulling a 2-run double into the corner early on. Johnson also showcased quicker hands with sound defensive actions at 2B. Overall, the senior was one piece of a massive offensive explosion by Lake Washington that propelled them to a state championship.

Eastlake

'26 LHP/OF Rodrigo Montano (Uncommitted)
Eastlake's most consistent arm all season long that was coming off of a scoreless start in the first round of the state playoffs capped off his stellar season with a great start in Eastlake's semifinal. The lefty went the distance, going 7 innings to secure a tight 2-1 victory for the Wolves. Montano held a tough Jackson offense at bay, allowing just 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 8 batters. Worked from the stretch with a FB sitting 79-82 MPH, mixing in a CB/CH offspeed combination. Extremely efficient, particularly in the early innings, needing just 94 pitches in his outing. Montano also reached base three times across Eastlake's 2 games over the weekend. Standout performance.

'25 INF/LHP Thomas Wood (Bellevue Commit)
Wood was one of two Eastlake players with a multi-hit game in the semifinal, going 2 for 3 from the leadoff spot. The senior also added a double and scored a run in the championship game. The lefty also got the start on the mound for Eastlake in the final, and despite some mixed results he threw strikes with a low 80's fastball over 2.1 innings of work. Wood was a critical two-way piece for Eastlake and will be a tough senior to replace next season.

'25 C Travis Beam (Uncommitted)
Beam had some nice moments both offensively and defensively across the two games. The senior showcased a strong arm early on in the title game, hosing a runner with a throw on the bag. The compact-framed righty also went 1-1 with a single, RBI, run scored, walk, and a stolen base in game two for Eastlake. The senior had carved out a nice role by the end of this season and will be another senior to replace next season.

'26 OF Jayden Matsuoka (Uncommitted)
The athletic outfielder impressed in the opening rounds of state playoff action and carried his momentum into Yakima. Matsuoka went 2 for 2 from the 9-hole in the semifinal against Jackson, driving in the eventual winning run with a line drive the other way. The twitchy athlete showed adjustability with an aggressive approach at the plate. The junior had to battle some gusting winds and track down several balls in the gap, showing high-effort and an ability to close down space quickly.

'25 INF Noah Koong (Brandeis Commit)
A steady presence in the middle of the lineup and at shortstop, Koong showed a mature approach across both games for the Wolves. The senior went 1-3 with a double and a big run scored in game one, reaching base and scoring in the championship game as well. Quiet approach shown from the RH side. Defensively, Koong made several plays moving to both the forehand and backhand, as well as a really impressive play on a fly ball in foul territory. Solid all-around performance.

Puyallup

'25 INF Gage Thompson (Oregon State Commit)
The Oregon State commit and a staple in the Viking lineup for years, Thompson capped off his strong senior campaign with a towering solo HR to plate Puyallup's lone run. Strong, physical athlete seems to be moving better as the season has progressed. RH swing creates loft with a pull-oriented approach seen over multiple games this spring. Some swing and miss present, but ability to do damage when he connects. Attacked a couple of ground balls and made every play in limited defensive action.

'25 LHP Jett Reed (Uncommitted)
After LW was all over Puyallup pitching early, Reed came in and kept his team in it with a great relief appearance across Friday evening and Saturday morning. The senior lefty threw strikes at over a 68 percent clip with a FB that was up to 85 MPH. Pitched to contact successfully, with a final line of 4.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 0 K. Really strong performance to keep his team in it.

'28 OF/RHP Madden Pike (Uncommitted)
The top-ranked 2028 player in the Washington state class primarily because of his arm talent, Pike showed his well-rounded game for his age, reaching base twice from the bottom of the order. The switch hitter chose to hit righty even against a RH arm, but pulled through a single to LF as his offensive highlight. The freshman has shown plate discipline in multiple looks this spring and drew a walk in this look as well. Pike will certainly be one of the biggest must-follows in years to come as his game continues to develop.

'25 RHP/INF Mason Pike (Oregon State Commit)
While the senior and one of the top talents in the PNW didn't have the end to his high school career he was hoping for, the elder Pike still showcased some premium stuff and showed why he has gotten some MLB draft buzz for this upcoming summer. The righty had an athletic delivery with a FB at 91-94 MPH, touching 95 and mostly sitting 93-94 MPH throughout his outing. The Oregon State commit's strike zone was squeezed a bit early on, leading to some deeper counts and loud contact, but he showcased poise on the mound despite some tough results. Pike also showed two distinct breaking balls in the outing with a tighter mid-80's slider and a slower CB with some depth at 79-80 MPH. The loss capped what was a fantastic high school career and one of the best statistical runs on the mound in quite some time.

Jackson

'25 RHP Drew Pepin (Uncommitted)
Pepin turned in a gritty performance on the mound as he has done all season, keeping the Timberwolves in it on a day where their offense was held quiet. The senior arm went the distance, going 6 innings of 2 run ball while striking out 5 and walking just 1 batter. Pepin threw a ton of breaking balls in the high 60's as his primary offering while also throwing a FB that topped out at 81 MPH. The state semifinal start capped off an incredible season for Pepin, who totaled 68.2 innings with a 0.82 ERA overall.

'26 OF Ashton Bergman (Uncommitted)
Bergman has led the way offensively for the Timberwolves all spring, and continued to carry in Yakima. The lefty reached base in every one of his plate appearances, finishing 2 for 2 with 2 singles and 2 walks overall. Bergman showed a plus ability to find the barrel, using all fields to rope balls on a line both in districts and this weekend in the state semifinal. The junior also played a sound centerfield, with longer strides covering ground and great jumps/first steps on fly balls.

'25 OF Hawkeye Delgado (Uncommitted)
The physical senior had his high school career come to an end this weekend. Delgado has been an imposing middle of the order presence for Jackson for some time now, and finished 1 for 3 with an infield single in his final game. The senior has the ability to change a game with XBH power and a larger frame, and profiles well in a corner OF spot, where he saw action this weekend. Senior will be a tough piece to replace for Jackson next season.

'26 OF Quin Johns (Uncommitted)
Johns was likely saved to pitch in Jackson's second matchup of the weekend, which was unfortunately not able to take place due to lighting issues at the field and scheduling conflicts with the WIAA. Johns was still able to make an impact in the semifinal, finishing 1 for 3 with a double and driving in the lone run of the evening for Jackson. The athletic junior could stick at any of the three OF spots defensively as well. Johns will be seen at PNW State Games this summer.
