NorCal Rising Stars Game: Positional Analysis

On Saturday, May 10th, the PB California staff traveled to Islanders Field in Lathrop, CA, to host the NorCal Rising Stars Game, an invite-only event for the class of 2029-2030.
More than 20 players made their way to Lathrop and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball California staff.
Today, we will be looking at all of the positional reports from the event.
POSITIONAL ANALYSIS
Kamren Avila, Folsom High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-7, 112 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Narrow setup, stands tall. Uses a small toe tap to control balance. Hands are resting right at the shoulder. Stays short too and long though, good extension, uses lower half well, will add strength in future.
Power: 78 mph max exit velocity (74.2 avg.); 210-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 72.00 mph. Arm is going to get stronger, shows more on mound. Can get it across the diamond, arm needs to improve to stay in left side. Gets on top of ball across.
Defense: Above average first step, attacks the ball aggressive, quick trasnsfer, has soft hands.
Athletic Testing: 7.82 runner in the 60-yard dash; 21.70-inch max vertical jump.
Brett Barnes, CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 5-10, 133 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Stands upright, hands rest at ear level. Short stride present. Hands drift quite a bit, quicks hands allow him to hit out in front right now. Long swing path, but stays through the zone well. Good extension with strong front side. Can create lift up the middle and to pull side.
Power: 81 mph max exit velocity (69 avg.); 246-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 69.00 mph. Some length in arm path, but shows accurate arm. Will need to improve to stay on left side of INF.
Defense: Moves well laterally in the INF. Quiet feet, gets good reads off bat, soft hands.
Athletic Testing: 7.87 runner in the 60-yard dash; 15.50-inch max vertical jump.
Andres Castellanos, Liberty High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 2B/3B
Body: 5-2, 122 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Upright, open stance with long stride. Hands relaxed at ear level. Shifts weight well to front side. Repeatable mechanics. Short to the ball, with quick hands through the zone. Gets into front side well with good extension. Consistently finds the barrel, flashes opposite field power.
Power: 78 mph max exit velocity (66.5 avg.); 241-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 72.00 mph. Length in arm path, with some inconsistencies in arm action with shoulder tilt. Can make throws across the infield, but will need to add strength to stay on left side.
Defense: Showcases good range to his left and right. Takes good angles with quiet feet. Soft hands present with quick transfer.
Athletic Testing: runner in the 60-yard dash; 18.30-inch max vertical jump.
Mason Cole, Del Oro High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 5-9, 181 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Slightly open stance with tall posture, hands set above back shoulder. Uses small toe tap for timing before getting into load. Hands drift quite a bit. Shifts weight into backside well prior to aggressive move towards front side with stride. Quick through the zone with good use of lower half. Maintains balance well, quickness in hip rotation. Creates good separation, with bat path that gets to the zone quickly and creates lift/carry to pull side and up the middle.
Power: 94 mph max exit velocity (85.4 avg.); 350-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 68.00 mph. Shows length in arm path out of the glove. Can make on-line throws across the INF, but has tendency to open up shoulders a bit early, causing some inconsistencies in release.
Defense: Good glove work with soft hands present. Moves downhill fairly well, with quiet feet.
Athletic Testing: 7.45 runner in the 60-yard dash; 18.40-inch max vertical jump.
Ryder Dokken, Liberty High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 5-8, 170 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Upright, slightly open stance. Hands rest slightly above back shoulder. Gets into backside well, with short stride and miminal hand movement. Does become slightly closed off with stride across body. Hands stay close to the body. Shifts weight well, gets good extension. Puts barrel to ball often, with flat bat path. Gap-to-gap profile present.
Power: 85 mph max exit velocity (78.3 avg.); 277-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 65.00 mph. Has a strong enough arm to make the throw down to 2nd. Opens shoulders a bit early though, with throws often having a high carry as a result. Will need to improve to stick behind the dish.
Defense: 2.25-2.41 pop time range; Soft hands behind the dish. Moves well and is quick to get out of crouch on balls in the dirt. Fairly quick transfer.
Athletic Testing: 8.42 runner in the 60-yard dash; 15.70-inch max vertical jump.
Dash Footman, Encinal (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: OF/3B
Body: 6-0, 190 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Very open stance, with hands resting at shoulder level. Shifts weight into back hip with small toe tap to start load. Hands tip the barrel during stride forward. Gets good extension, with flat bat path that stays through the zone well. Gap-to-gap profile present at the moment, with tendency to cast his hands throughout bat path.
Power: 92 mph max exit velocity (79.9 avg.); 263-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 66.00 mph. OF - 72.00 mph. INF: Short arm path, with low 3/4 release; shows looseness. Makes online throws to the base, but will need to add arm strength/depth to the path to stay on the left side. OF: Shows some dpeth in arm path, with more aggressive motion as he gets through his arm path. Gets some carry on his throws, but can be prone to opening up too early.
Defense: INF: Aggressive first step. Good footwork and moves downhill/laterally well. Soft hands with quick transfer. OF: Shows good instincts and takes direct routes to the ball. Displays good speed to cover ground in the OF.
Athletic Testing: 7.47 runner in the 60-yard dash; 20.60-inch max vertical jump.
Matthew Gallego, DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 5-6, 154 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Narrow and balanced setup, with slight knee bend and hip hinge. Stays more vertical with upper body, while resting hands just above shoulder level. Engages lower half more to start load, following with an aggressive stride forward. Hands drift back somewhat, with slight barrel tip during load. Shifts weight to front side well, while getting good extension. Hands stay back well to generate some separation. Shows direct hand path and bat path. Back knee sinks down somewhat during turn, with potential to create some lift. Will need to increase bat speed as frame fills out; hands drag behind a bit.
Power: 79 mph max exit velocity (74.5 avg.); 239-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 57.00 mph. Creates some depth out of the glove, with quick arm path to get to a good release point. Shows accuracy with low 3/4 slot, but will need to add arm strength in the future.
Defense: Demonstrates good hands and solid footwork. Good body control and showcases ability to move laterally. Lets ball travel on hard grounders, while demonstrating solid movement downhill when necessary.
Athletic Testing: 8.95 runner in the 60-yard dash; 12.60-inch max vertical jump.
Jonathan Gutierrez, Elk Grove High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-10, 163 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, upright setup. Higher back elbow with hands resting at shoulder level. Smooth load with hands drifting back, shifitng into back hip, and small stride forward. Aggressive hip turn, with present bat speed to go along with upright posture. Gets good separation, with bat path that generates lift and carry. Consistently finds the barrel. Flashes power to all fields.
Power: 91 mph max exit velocity (84 avg.); 330-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 67.00 mph. INF - 72.00 mph. Clean, but somewhat lengthy transfer at chest level. Has the arm to make throws to bases, but currently has to open up his shoulders a bit. Throws down have quite a bit of carry. Will need to add arm strength.
Defense: 2.29-2.31 pop time range; Good receiving skills, while showcasing strong mobilty and an ability to block.
Athletic Testing: 7.65 runner in the 60-yard dash; 21.70-inch max vertical jump.
Luke Harmon, San Marin High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: RHP/SS
Body: 6-0, 137 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Tall, slightly open stance. Hands rest slightly above back shoulder with bat waggle. Uses toe tap for timing prior to stride forward. Gets into back hip during load, with small barrel tip and hand movement. Creates some separation while getting solid extension. Maintains flat, direct bat path that covers the zone well. More contact-oriented approach currently. Should add bat speed and more hip rotation as frame fills out.
Power: 82 mph max exit velocity (71.2 avg.); 254-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 67.00 mph. Clean transfer with the ability to get rid of the ball quick. Short arm path, with not much depth and a low release. Will need to improve to stick on left side.
Defense: Gets good reads with strong first step. Good footwork with the ability to move well laterally and downhill. Shows good range.

Devin Hernandez, Liberty High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 2B/SS
Body: 5-4, 102 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Tall, open stance with hands resting just above shoulder level and weight shifted into backside. Shifts weight further into backside during load, with slight toe tap for timing before aggressive stride forward and slight barrel tip. Stays short to ball, with solid bat speed that gets through the zone well. Hips and hands begin to go during stride forward. Gap-to-gap profile present with bat path that stays flat through the zone. Room to add power as frame fills out and with changes to lower half.
Power: 75 mph max exit velocity (67.7 avg.); 213-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 67.00 mph. Quick transfer and gets rid of the ball quick. Shorter arm path, with not much depth. Makes online throws across the INF with some carry. Should as arm strength as frame fills out.
Defense: Clean footwork with good body control. Moves well both laterally and downhill. Showcases soft hands and solid first step.
Athletic Testing: 8.62 runner in the 60-yard dash; 16.60-inch max vertical jump.
Deegan Holquin, Buchanan High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 5-9, 159 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Stands upright, hands are relaxed below the ears. Uses toe tap as timing mechanism. Hands drift a little, bat speed makes up for it right now. Repeatable mechanics. Has some buggy whip in the swing, aggressive follow through, tends to lift sometimes. Has fast hands and can flash pullside pop at times.
Power: 91 mph max exit velocity (79.7 avg.); 312-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 79.00 mph. Showcases present arm speed, with somewhat long transfer. Has depth in arm with length shown out of the glove. Shows accuracy and online carry, with low release. Profiles to stay on left side.
Defense: Lets ball travel with solid hands. Comfortable moving laterally with decent footwork. Can move well downhill when necessary. Profiles best at 3B.

Brandon Hurtado, Freedom High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 2B/SS
Body: 5-9, 134 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Balanced setup, with upright posture. Hands resting at ear level, with some waggle. Sinks into back hip slightly, prior to becoming more balanced again during toe tap. Incorporates long stride forward. Hands lag behind a but due to stride length. Showcases quickness in hip rotation, creating good separation. Stays short to the ball, with hands that are direct through the zone. Finds the barrel consistently and should add power in the future.
Power: 83 mph max exit velocity (74.5 avg.); 301-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 76.00 mph. Shows some length and depth in the arm path, but shows solid arm strength and accuracy from the left side. Comfortable throwing from various slots.
Defense: Strong first step, with quiet feet and soft hands. Moves downhill aggressively while playing angles well laterally.
Athletic Testing: 7.97 runner in the 60-yard dash; 19.30-inch max vertical jump.
Kolten Irwin, Folsom High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: LHP/1B
Body: 5-11, 169 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Upright stance, while maintaining balance with slightly wide setup. Hands rest at shoulder with minor waggle. Simple load. Gets into back hip a bit, with hands drifting back. Tips barrel vertically with small stride forward. Stays balanced upon stride, with solid separation. Bat path tends to shows uphill plane, with hands that work through the zone. Room to add power with better lower half activation.
Power: 78 mph max exit velocity (70.8 avg.); 260-foot max batted distance.
Arm: LH. INF - 68.00 mph. Lengthy arm path, with depth out of the glove. Quick release on throws to 2nd, but adds extra step on throws to 3rd. Low 3/4 release creates low carry. Shows accurate arm. Will need to add some arm strength.
Defense: Strong glove work, with solid body control and good instincts. Lets the ball travel often, but can move downhill when needed.
Athletic Testing: 9.02 runner in the 60-yard dash; 16.10-inch max vertical jump.
Joseph D. Keller, West Park High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-11, 186 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, with weight shifted to back knee and high back elbow. Hands resting a shoulder level with slight bat waggle. Simple load with high leg kick and shifting weight further into back knee before stride forward. Adds slight vertical barrel tip. Showcases a whip-like action through the zone. Turns with quickness in the hips, with his hands staying back well. Showcases present bat speed. Hand and barrel paths both work slightly uphill. Frequently makes hard contact and flashes power to pull side.
Power: 90 mph max exit velocity (76.7 avg.); 260-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 70.00 mph. Short, quick arm path that produces online throws to the bag with low carry. Will need to add arm strength to avoid throws in the dirt.
Defense: 2.20-2.21 pop time range; Smooth receiver with good mobility. Showcases consistent footwork. Keep the ball in front well.
Athletic Testing: 8.29 runner in the 60-yard dash; 15.90-inch max vertical jump.
Kasen Lim, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-6, 117 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Upright, very open stance with weight shifted into rear hip. Hands resting at chest level with low back elbow. Starts with barrel tip to load hands while upper body coils back. Incorporates small leg kick with stride forward. Hands are direct in the zone, while staying close to the body. Gets good extension with barrel path that is angled towards RF. Opposite-field, contact-oriented approach, while constantly keeping the ball off the ground. Room for power to develop as frame fills out and with quicker lower half.
Power: 78 mph max exit velocity (70 avg.); 250-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 68.00 mph. Consistent transfer, with length and depth in arm path. Releases from lower slot and makes online throws, but has some carry. Should add arm strength as frame fills out.
Defense: Solid body control with soft hands present. Good instincts laterally. Could show more aggressiveness on balls hit in front of him to stay on left side.

Isaiah McIntyre, Tracy High School (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: OF/SS
Body: 5-9, 137 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Tall, balanced stance with slight weight shift into back knee. Hands rest slightly above shoulder level. Barrel pointed towards 1B, with low back elbow. Small bat waggle present. Simple load where hands drift back along with vertical barrel tip. Shifts weight further into back hip, with small stride forward and raises back elbow. Gets decent separation, but relies mostly on upper half. Hands stay close to the body, with direct bat path that showcases present bat speed and can create lift/carry. Flashes power to pull side and up the middle. Room for additional power with better use of lower half/more separation.
Power: 87 mph max exit velocity (79.3 avg.); 276-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 76.00 mph. Length and depth in the arm path, with aggressive arm action. Opens shoulder somewhat early, causing quite a bit of carry on throws. Shows solid arm strength, but will need to improve accuracy.
Defense: Athletic mover who takes good angles to the ball and shows potential to cover ground well. Displays good instincts and gets behind the ball well on balls in the air.

Enzi-Yaw Otieku, Encinal Junior/Senior High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 6-1, 170 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Upright stance, with weight shifted slightly into back side. Hands resting at shoulder level, with vertical barrel tip. Smooth and controlled load, shifting weight further into back hip and hands drifting back slightly. Pairs with small stride forward. Hips fire aggressively, with upper half following suit. Hands work quickly through the zone, with bat speed present. Stays upright and balanced throughout swing, with bat path that generates consistent lift/carry. Pull side approach, but flashes power to all fields.
Power: 91 mph max exit velocity (81.4 avg.); 328-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 84.00 mph. Lengthy arm path, that works with aggressive arm-action. Gets low carry on throws and shows accuracy. Usually works from lower slot, but comfortable throwing from multiple angles.
Defense: Showcases soft hands and takes strong angles. Exhibits clean footwork and is comfortable working both laterally and downhill. Works aggressively and positions body well to keep balls in front.

Lucas Rancadore, BRADSHAW CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-1, 188 pounds.
Hit: LHH. Works from upright, balanced stance while being slightly open. Rests bat on back shoulder, with front elbow raised. Sinks into back hip to start load. Brings hands back and down, along with vertical barrel tip. Uses toe tap for timing before small stride forward. Shifts weight to front side well, while getting some separation. Hands stay short to the ball, with swing path that works fairly quick through the zone. Generates lift and carry to pull side and up the middle. Has room to add more power as lower half gets engaged more.
Power: 96 mph max exit velocity (78.5 avg.); 369-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 78.00 mph. Fairly lengthy arm path, with a bit of depth. Exhibits quick arm-action, but can vary with his release. Consistent low carry when keeping taller posture.
Defense: Good mover who can cover ground well and shows good instincts. Shows good footwork and plays angles, getting behind the ball consistently.
Athletic Testing: 7.38 runner in the 60-yard dash; 18.90-inch max vertical jump.
Tyler Ross, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 6-2, 149 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Upright, open stance, while sinking slightly into back knee. Hands rest at shoulder level, with vertical bat angle and slight bat waggle. Begins load by sinking more into back hip, with toe tap. Hands drift back and down, while getting more vertical with barrel and raising back elbow. Exhibits aggressive stride forward. Hips begin to fire aggressively as front leg lands. Shows some length to barrel path, but makes up for it with present bat speed. Barrel path gets in zone early, while generating hard contact in the air. Does have tendency to lean over, so may struggle with pitches inside. Showcases power up the middle and to opposite field.
Power: 87 mph max exit velocity (81.4 avg.); 334-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 80.00 mph. Has length in arm path, with some depth out of the glove. Explosive arm action, with low carry on throws. Lower release, but can be susceptible to getting on top. Arm profiles to handle left side.
Defense: Gets good first step, getting strong reads off the bat. Plays well laterally, with soft hands and good footwork. Profiles to stay on left side.

Angelo Rubio, Freedom High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 3B/1B
Body: 5-10, 174 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Open stance, with taller posture. Hands resting at ear level, with barrel resting across shoulder. Shifts weight into back hip to begin load, with hands drifting back and barrel tipping vertically. Adds toe tap, before stride forward. Begins hip turn with weight still in back side. Hands stay close to the body, with slightly uphill path that works through the zone well. Stays in back side throughout swing path, but flashes power to pull side and up the middle.
Power: 86 mph max exit velocity (80.5 avg.); 311-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 68.00 mph. Shows short arm path, with some depth. Adds quick transfer. Works from lower release and gets high carry on throws. Will need to add arm strength to stay on left side.
Defense: Showcases good footwork and good hands, with ability to play laterally. Could play more dynamic downhill, but demonstrates solid footwork.
Athletic Testing: 8.13 runner in the 60-yard dash; 14.40-inch max vertical jump.
Dillon Veale, Redwood High (CA), 2029
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 6-0, 158 pounds.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, with taller posture. Hands are relexed just above shoulder level and show some bat waggle. Begins minimal load by sinking slightly into rear knee. Adds toe tap with very small stride, with hips driving forward. Barrel gets slightly more vertical and back elbow raises. Upper body starts to coil back. Hips fire open, with upper half getting through the zone simultaneously. Exhibits short swing path, with hands that are quick through the zone. Barrel path is angled towards RF, and works flat through the zone. Stays tall throughout swing. Prone to getting on top of the ball often. Would like to see better lower half usage.
Power: 86 mph max exit velocity (76.3 avg.); 230-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 72.00 mph. Demonstrates length and depth out of the glove, with a somewhat lengthy transfer. Gets low carry on throws and shows accuracy. Should add arm strength as frame fills out.
Defense: Exhibits solid range laterally, with good footwork. Showcases solid foundation, playing angles well. Could add more urgency on balls hit in front of him.
