We begin to wrap up our 2025 Virginia/DC high school coverage with a final rankings list of the Top 50 teams across the state. For these rankings, this is a complete body of work, not just a team getting on a heater for two weeks in June. These are the teams that have the strongest resumes. Taking into consideration: Quality of Competition, Good Wins, Bad Losses, How Teams Won Those Quality Games, How Teams Played Versus Inferior Opponents, Injuries, and much more.

We have given details for each team that resides inside the final Power 25, as well as listing out the teams ranked 26-50, making this our first Top 50 ranking in recent memory.

This upcoming week we will wrap up our 2025 VA/DC high school season with the postseason awards, including Honorable Mention, Underclass, 3rd Team, 2nd Team, 1st Team, Pitcher of the Year, and Player of the Year.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Cadets were 6-0 on the season versus Top 50 teams in VA/DC. They swept Paul VI, Bishop O'Connell, and beat Gainesville. The Cadets were led by a tremendous group of seniors. Nate Hawton-Henley (Maryland), Nick Felton (ODU), Ren Devereux (Penn State), Caleb Hawton-Henley (Randolph-Macon), Gavin Weber (Shenandoah), Sean McCabe (Coll. of Charleston), and Clayton Armah (Auburn) were the core of this 2025 version of the Cadets. The only loss of the season was to the IMG National team, who finished #2 in the country. The perennial power Cadets allowed only 56 runs over the course of a thirty-one game season, while scoring nearly 300 runs (298). Dominant is an understatement for this team.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. There was not a team in the Mid-Atlantic region that played the quality of schedule that the Mavericks did. MSA had a rocky start, playing four straight powerhouse programs in Florida to open the season (beat Highland before heading to Florida). The Mavs lost 3-0 to National Champion Stoneman Douglas, and after their journey back to Virginia, they dominated virtually every single day the rest of the season. The Mavs were tripped up twice, once versus St. Alban's where they were outscored in the first inning and never recovered, and lost a one run game to St. Chris later in the year. Coach Wagner's Mavericks played ten games versus Top 50 opponents and went 9-1 in those ten games. They scored over 300 runs this season in forty games, and gave up only 88 runs. They steamrolled their way through the VISAA DI playoffs, outscoring opponents 35-11.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. When our staff said prove us wrong, the Cardinals did just that. While they were succesful from start to finish, they still seemed to struggle getting over the hump versus the Battlefield Bobcats. While the Cardinals lost the first three games to them, they won the last two, a regional title and state title. Gainesville played an astounding SIXTEEN games verus Top 50 opponents, going 12-4 in those sixteen games. Of those four losses, there are not many, if any, that Caden Merritt was on the mound for. The Coastal Carolina commit was the key that started the engine on the mound (and plate) for the Cardinals. The Cardinals were led by a really strong group of seniors and juniors who pulled through when it mattered the most. In addition to their state title, Gainesville also captured the 2025 Commonwealth Classic Championship.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The young Bobcats continue to bust through the myths of young teams not being able to win. The underclass heavy group made it to a state tournament last year starting mainly freshmen, and did so again this year with mostly sophomores and juniors. While their season ended at the hands of the Gainesville Cardinals, they also defeated them three times, as well as winning games over Colgan, Patriot, McLean, West Springfield, Glen Allen, and Madison, five of which are Top 50 ranked teams.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The perennial power Warhawks were at it again in 2025. Coach Gjormand's group was littered with seniors and upperclassmen. Madison had wins over five Top 50 programs, and they also won the Hanahan Tournament on spring break. The did not have a single "bad loss" and three of the four losses were one or two run losses. The pitching staff for Madison carried the load, holding opponents to two runs or less in a game nineteen times.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Similar to a lot of these Class 6 teams from NOVA, they played harder schedules than almost everyone else in the state. The Spartans played six games versus teams in the Top 50, but had a 3-3 record in those games. Of the top ranked teams in the state, the Spartans did have the most significant loss when it comes to the quality of that opponent. There were some ups and downs with the pitching staff and they staff gave up more than 120 runs in their thirty game season, averaging just over four runs allowed per game. While their pitching staff did seem to give up runs in bunches, their offensive ability was more than enough to push this team very close to a state title. Led by Kaleb Williams (Liberty), the Spartans scored nearly 250 runs in 30 games, averaging nearly eight runs per game.

7.   Ocean Lakes HS VHSL Class 5

22-5**

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Ocean Lakes has gone from unranked all season, to landing inside of the Top 10. How is that possible? 1: While they did maintain a good record throughout the season, the Dolphins could never manage to beat "the best". Until June, OL lost every game they played versus the Beach District powers. The offense never came through in those big games until playoff time. 2: We have not updated the power rankings in nearly a month, leaving a lot of room for movement. Lastly, the thought coming into the season was that the Dolphins would have more than enough talent on the offensive and positional side, but how would the young arms respond to the pressure of being "the guys" for OL? Daniel Hamilton, Aiden Skalski, and Luke Ellison are three underclassmen that threw meaningful innings for the Dolphins and stepped up to the challenge at every turn. Most importantly, the eventual Class 5 State Champions won when it mattered.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. A little bit of a Jekyll and Hyde season at times for the Falcons. Lopsided wins versus quality opponents, close wins versus teams they were much better than, a lopsided loss or two versus teams that they were on par with talent wise, it was tough to figure this team out at times, but the one certainty was that they were going when it came to playoff time. Some new parts had to be worked through during the course of the season and it seemed to come together much more cohesively towards the end of the season. One of their losses was a benefit game, or so it seems, and that did not count towards their final record. Of their other four losses, three of them came via a two or one run loss, including their two playoff losses to Ocean Lakes. While there was no one shining star necessarily, there were plenty of seniors that stepped up to the challenge. Conner Worth (JMU), Christian Dewey (GW), Ben Kablach (Barton), Brendan White (EMU), and James Godfrey (Norfolk State) were some of the more seasoned vets for this club and were some of the names they leaned on the most.

9.  Independence HS VHSL Class 5

21-3

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Independence was the highest ranked team that hung on to their undefeated season the longest, with their first loss coming not coming until April 16th versus Lightridge. Like the Falcons of Cox HS, the Tigers used major contributions from a large number of players, including senior standout Chase Obstgarten (Bridgewater) and junior Colton Hicks. The two multi-year starters contributed on the mound and at the plate for the Tigers. While they did not have a lot of Top 50 opponents, the ones that they did have, for the most part, they handled business. The Tigers had three combined wins over Riverbend and Mills Godwin where they outscored the Class 5 contenders by a total score of 30-3 in those three games. The offense was not really "dynamic", but the best description for the Indy lineup would be relentless. From top to bottom they had players that could hurt you and there were not really any "dead outs" in the order. Indy's season ended at the hands of Cox by a final score of 2-1 in the state semifinals.

10.   Atlee HS VHSL Class 4

19-3

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Raiders were once again the favorite to win the VHSL Class 4 title. While they did not finish their back to back title run, they did manage a 19-3 season and a Region 4B Championship. The Raiders went 3-3 in six games versus Top 50 teams and that may have been the only knock on this Raider team, was the schedule was not the hardest schedule of top ten teams. Of their three losses, two of them came via one run, both of which were to Top 25 teams. The other loss was to the eventual Class 4 State Champion Heritage Pride. Versus the best teams/best arms they played, the offense tended to be light. The Raiders scored around 120 of their 169 runs versus their weakest opponents, while they averaged around four runs in their games versus the toughest opponents. While that was more than enough for this dominant staff, the offensive style did not always allow for big innings and scoring outbursts versus quality arms and quality opponents. The Raiders should once again be an early favorite in 2026, after they will return a large core of this season's team.

27-9

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Five of the nine losses for this Panthers team came to the top two ranked teams in the state. The PVI staff had talent and depth and the offense delivered the majority of the time this year, averaging around seven runs per game. Carter Perdue (ECU), Brenden Moehnke (Iona), Aiden Gallagher (JMU), and Landon McGinn did a lot of heavy lifting on the mound, while Owen Peltier (VMI) and Thomas Jewett were the tone setters for the offense. The Panthers played eight games versus Top 50 opponents, going 2-6 in those games. Ultimately, PVI played a fairly hard schedule, but it was the fact that they were not able to close on more of those eight higher ranked games that kept them out of the Top 10.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. 41-9 record over the past two seasons and a Class 5 State Championship in 2024. This is not the way that anyone expected the FC season to end in 2025. The top seeded Patriots' season ended at the hands of Kempsville in the first round of the playoffs. While this was a huge upset, FC still had a very successful season. Coach Stubbe's group went 4-2 in Top 50 games, including two wins over Ocean Lakes and win over Cox. While this FC program will look considerably different in 2026, it was impossible to keep them out of the final rankings because this is an entire body of work, not just one game.

22-4**

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Blazers of Spotswood High School had a ridiculous run througout 2025, especially their nine game winning streak to finish the season. During that winning streak Spotswood defeated four Top 50 programs on their way to the Class 3 State Championship. Brady Hoover was the Valley District Player of the Year. Between the Longwood commit and the talented arm of fellow senior Carter Lenz, Spotswood had more than enough arm talent to make a run. Well then you add in freshman phenom Tyler Howard and you have a very strong rotation. Three of their four losses came via one run and many of their wins were close games, which in turn more than likely prepared them for their run in June.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Woodgrove went until the last day of April before they lost a game. That game was an extra inning, one run loss to Paul VI on the road. The Wolverines had four wins over Top 50 teams, including one over a Top 25 team. Two of their most impressive wins this season came in the state tournament versus Jefferson Forest and Hanover, both wins by a combined eleven runs.

15.   Mills Godwin HS VHSL Class 5

18-6

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Eagles benefited greatly from arguably the best pitching season in the state. That season was produced by senior left hander, Luke Smyers. The Alabama commit got the ball in nearly every big game, and more times than not, he delivered a stellar performance. Smyers defeated teams like Atlee, Atlantic Shores, Glen Allen, Freeman, Midlothian, and Deep Run. Most of these games were complete games, or near it, and most all tallied double digit strikeouts. The Eagles lacked consistent pitching performances after Smyers and ultimately that, as well as some quiet offensive games, ran the loss total up to six. The Eagles will have to replace a lot heading into 2026, as losing Smyers alone will be a tough road to navigate.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Three losses to in state teams, including the state championship loss to Spotswood. The Abingdon Falcons played as tough of a schedule as they have played in recent years, including competing in the Commonwealth Classic tournament in April. The Falcons' season was anchored by a ridiculous 2025 campaign from Jett Humphreys. Joining the William & Mary commit in significant contributions were Landon Turman (East Carolina), Hayden Reed (Virginia Tech), and Elijah Parks. Those four were some of the biggest standouts for this Abingdon team. The southwest Virginia powerhouse faced four teams inside the Top 50, going 2-2 in those four games. Their best wins were wins over Northside, William Monroe, and a pair of wins over John Battle.

17.   Highland School VISAA DII

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Hawks are once again VISAA DII State Champions. Highland was absolutely loaded with senior talent. Monster seasons from Joey Rogers (Wingate), Benjamin Cardone (VMI), Jake Gunning, and Justin Summers (William & Mary) carried the weight for the offense. All of those players hit .395+ for a team that played nine in state games versus Top 50 teams, as well as faced good competition in the Florida HS Invitational and played a pair of games versus Grace Christian (NC). In those nine in state games, the Hawks went 4-5 in those Top 50 matchups. While there were some stints that the pitching staff had some struggles in bigger games, the offense really turned it up the last week of the season and carried this Hawks team to their second state title.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. All season, GCA was the frontrunner to win the VISAA DII title, but was taken down by the Steward Spartans in the VISAA semifinal game. The Gators also played nine games versus Top 50 opponents, going 6-3 in those games, and may have had one of the best out of state wins of any team in the rankings. The Gators defeated Oceanside Collegiate (SC) during their spring break tournament championship game. GCA averaged ten runs a game this season and had big in state wins over teams like Mills Godwin, Cape Henry, and Atlantic Shores. This Greenbrier team was paced by a monster season from Thomas Conrad. The VMI commit hit .486, had seven homeruns, and swiped forty-two bases over the course of the season.

19.   McLean HS VHSL Class 6

20-7

+ Click here for a season breakdown. While McLean was looking for a Class 6 repeat in 2025, the Highlanders came up a few games short after losing to West Springfield in the semifinals. McLean did not lose a game in May and looked to be surging into the playoffs before losing back to back games to end the season. They had some quality wins on the season, but it was their inability to finish games versus the best teams that led to them going 3-5 versus Top 50 teams. The Highlanders faced four teams in the Top 6 and they went 0-4 in those games. What is the outlook in 2026? They have a ton of senior production to replace, but maybe none bigger than the production of arms like Alex Gonzalez (Cincinnati) and Christian Dray (Richmond).

+ Click here for a season breakdown. After a really down year in 2024, the Saints bounced back after getting healthy in 2025. Seniors Willie Hurt (Virginia Tech), Wally Jones, and Henry Knighton (GW) were the keys to success this season. Hurt hit .474 on the season and Knighton threw 53.1 innings, holding a 1.7 ERA that was inflated due to two games (Collegiate and Paul VI). The Saints have the best in state win of any team in Virginia after defeating Miller School in a one run game in April. While they did have a much better season in 2025, the Saints went 1-5 in six games versus Top 50 teams, showing some struggles versus the top arms that they faced this season.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Control what you can control. Auburn cannot change their location, classification, etc, but unlike some others, they handled their business basically from start to finish. One loss to Blacksburg, who is a Top 50 team, was the only hiccup this season. The Eagles demolished their competition all season. 307 runs scored and 63 runs allowed, this southwest Virginia power could not be stopped or slowed down. They capped off their season with a Class 1 championship after defeating Fort Chiswell by a 10-0 run ruled final. What would be the only/biggest knock to keep a one loss club outside the Top 10? Their strength of schedule, which is largely out of their control, is arguably the worst inside of the Top 50. They played two games versus Top 50 opponents, going 1-1 versus Blacksburg. Outside of that, Auburn had a ridiculous season and was very well deserving of being inside of the Top 25.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Of the Wildcats' seven losses, three of them came to out of state teams over spring break. In state, the Wildcats did not have a single loss to a team outside of the Top 50. Great Bridge went 5-4 in their nine Top 50 games, but three of those wins came versus Hickory. The Chesapeake area rivalry was very one-sided this spring. The Wildcats obliterated the Hawks, tallying a final line of 44-11 with most of those eleven runs coming on the backend of a playoff rout. Great Bridge will return a large portion of their core in 2026 and should be a frontrunner for a Class 5 title next season.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. The Sharks saw a small improvement from 2024 to 2025, moving from a 16-7 season to 18-4, but their season still ended just short of the state tournament after a loss to Gainesville. The Sharks had two losses that would hurt their RPI and a lopsided loss to Battlefield early on. Other than that, the Sharks rolled through their competition. While they did roll off eighteen wins, there was only one win versus a Top 50 team. They defeated Gainesville 3-0 in a high octane matchup in early April, but would not have another quality win the rest of the season. The Sharks will have to replace a ton of offensive production from this 2025 club if they want to be in the same spot next season.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. Jackson-Reed had a really strong season in the DCSAA, but came up one game short after losing to St. Alban's in the Championship. The Tigers did not have a bad loss all season, but also did not have a bunch of quality wins outside of an early St. Alban's victory and a win over Georgetown Prep (MD). Senior Jackson Loomis (Denison) was the clubhouse leader at the plate and Simon Corbin and Nelson Hayes (Georgetown) saw the brunt of the work on the mound. The Tigers return Nelson Hayes in 2026, but will have some offense to replace to challenge for the DCSAA title yet again.

+ Click here for a season breakdown. To put it mildly, it has been a very interesting last eight months for the Hawks. However, this Hanover team overcame a lot and put themselves in a position once again to challenge for a state title. This says a lot about the grit for some of those players, as well as the competitiveness and team first mentality that has been instilled in them for quite some time. The Hawks had quality wins over Atlee, Maury, and Spotsylvania. Their season came to a close after a three run loss to Woodgrove in the semifinals. There are a lot of question marks this offseason, maybe even more than last. The roster will look significantly different and will be a very steep hill to climb in 2026.
