2025 OHSAA Tournament: Division III State Semifinal - #7 Wapakoneta vs #9 University School

AKRON - Aaron Moss threw a three-hit shutout sending University School to the Division III state championship game with a 4-0 victory over Wapakoneta on Friday at Canal Park.

The senior headed to Kenyon College never allowed more than one baserunner in any inning in putting the ninth-ranked team in Ohio one win away from a state title.

Moss outdueled Marshall recruit Grant Jolly, who had given up just four hits before the Preppers added to the 1-0 advantage with a three-run sixth.

Bryce Fielding put University School in front in the first with a single, stolen base, throwing error and an RBI ground out by Moss.

Jack Nelson and Bobby Berglund produced run-scoring singles in the sixth, sandwiched around a Tucker Greer sacrifice fly.

Wapak had runners in scoring position just twice, in the third on a two-out triple by Jolly and an inning later when Griffin Mericle led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Only four batters reached base for the seventh-ranked Redskins.

The Preppers, which have shut out four of six tournament opponents to date, will play Licking Valley on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Canal Park for the Division II crown.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Moss did a little of everything as he has done his whole career in setting school records for wins and hits. In his 21st pitching victory during his time at University School the senior fanned eight and walked one, permitting just three base runners. Not enough? The two-hole hitter for the Preppers had a single, double and RBI.

WHAT’S NEXT?: The best player on Wapakoneta has graduated but the remainder of the starting lineup is back including Drew Bailey, the SS and No. 2 pitcher for the Redskins who had one of the team’s three hits on Friday. Head coach Jason Brandt, who  won his 400th game this season, looks set to add on to that number for a program that has been to state three times in his tenure.
