2025 OHSAA Tournament: Division VII State Semifinal - #1 Calvert vs #5 Newark Catholic

AKRON - Miller Hutchison struck out 10 in 3.2 innings of one-run relief to pitch Newark Catholic past Tiffin Calvert 6-4 in the first OHSAA Division VII state semifinal game ever played on Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 3-0, the Green Wave scored two runs in the third and took the lead for good with a three-run fifth that featured singles by Hutchison, Max Moore and Mikey Hess along with two sacs, a pair of walks and an error, one of four in the game by Calvert.

An RBI double by Blake Coleman pulled the Senecas within 5-4 in the sixth, but Newark Catholic made it 6-4 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout by Hal Gillespie.

Hutchison then slammed the door on the top-ranked team in Ohio in the top of the seventh by striking out the side, moving the Green Wave to the state finals on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the winner of Russia and Minster.

Coleman, a Findlay commit and the lone senior starter for Calvert, had a single, double and walk for Calvert while Connor Moyer reached base on four walks for the Senecas, which lost in the state semifinals for the third time in the past four years.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hutchison not only stood out on the mound, but had three singles and scored two runs for Newark Catholic, a program one win away from its 10th state championship. But it was his pitching that drew an impression to those watching. The uncommitted senior came on in the top of the fourth with two on and one away with the Green Wave trailing 3-2 and promptly fanned two with a walk sandwiched in between. An unearned run in the sixth was all Calvert could muster the remainder of the game against the hard-throwing right-hander, striking out eight of the final 12 batters he faced.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN: Both teams had their chances, each leaving 10 runners left on base. When you lose, it seems even bigger and that’s the case for Calvert. Bases were left loaded in the three-run second, two runners were stranded in scoring position in the third and the bases were again left full in the fourth. The potential tying run was on third and lead run at second with two down in the sixth before a strikeout ended the threat. Add in four errors that led to two unearned runs, and Calvert was left wondering what might have been.

BIG PLAY: Perhaps overlooked in the comeback win was a defensive play by Nagel, the Newark Catholic sophomore second baseman. Behind 3-0, things were looking bleak with Calver runners on second and third with one down in the third. But a grounder to Nagel playing in resulted in a perfect strike to catcher Malone Hutchison for the second out of the inning and a pop out got the fifth-ranked team in D-VII out of the jam.

WHAT’S NEXT?: Coleman leaves huge shoes to fill as the team leader at shortstop and pitching ace, but head coach Matt Coleman has the rest of the starting lineup back along with Blake Coleman’s younger brother,,Tucker, a freshman who won eight games on the mound this year who came on in relief and touched 86 on the gun.
