PBT Illinois Open: Takeaways


Illinois Scouting Staff

This past weekend, we continued our tournament circuit with the PBT Illinois Open in Rantoul, Illinois. This open event hosted over 70 teams from around the state and surrounding states, with the ages ranging from 15-17U. Continue reading below to see some of the standouts from the weekend. 

15U

Chicago White Sox Ace 2028 - White

3B Matthew Gaston-Nabieu (Mount Carmel, 2028) 
Had an impressive weekend all around. At the plate, he was 9-for-11 with a homerun, three doubles, and nine RBIs. He has an aggressive gap-to-gap approach with loft to his swing. Defensively, he showcased range to the glove-hand side, good footwork working around the ball, and strong throws across the diamond. 

Illinois Premier-Blue

RHP Noah Karas (Lockport Township, 2028)
Karas has a 5-foot-11, 175-pound solid frame. Karas stood out this weekend with his pitchability. He was able to consistently hit spots with a 76-78 mph fastball and paired it well with a plus curveball that played almost 12-6.

Indiana Bulls North-Flores

RHP Brody Meyers (St. Joseph, 2029)
A high-waisted, long-levered 5-foot-9, 140-pound frame had an impressive outing for the Bulls, going two innings with three strikeouts and only allowing one earned run. On the mound, he has a clean delivery, medium leg lift, and drop/drive down the mound. He throws from a loose high ¾ slot with the fastball sitting 73-76 mph and the curveball sitting 62-63 mph. 

Mahomet Diamond Dogs

C Brennan Bailey (Mahomet-Seymour, 2028)
Bailey is a 5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitting catcher. At the plate, he poses a quiet load and smooth swing that showed well the whole weekend. Bailey also flashed the power with a dead-center solo home run. Behind the plate, Bailey has quick transfers that allow him to throw out runners.

RHP/SS Camden Beedy (Mahomet-Seymour, 2028) 
Beedy has a lean 6-foot-1 projectable frame. On the mound, Beedy’s fastball sat 79-82 mph while flashing a 66 mph curveball. With a high ¾ arm slot, Beedy is able to get heavy backspin on the fastball, allowing it to play well up in the zone. At the plate, Beedy is a left-handed hitter with a quiet load with no leg lift and a swing that plays well to the opposite field. In the field, Beedy fields his position well with good fundamentals.

Midwest Mafia

CF Jaxson Wix (Glenwood, 2028) 
A lean 6-foot, 160-pound frame with room to add strength. Hit multiple balls hard over the weekend, including a home run. Upright stance with a leg kick into a stride. Generates bat speed. Covers ground in center field with a strong arm.

RHP Levi Daly (Sacred Heart-Griffin, 2028)
Stands in at a lean 5-foot-11, 140-pound frame with plenty of room to continue to fill out. Looked really impressive in his start on Saturday. Despite giving up four runs (two earned) in the first inning, he stayed composed and shut down the Mafia bats, throwing five shutout innings. In total, he tossed six innings, giving up one hit, two walks, and striking out seven. He attacked the zone with a mid-70s fastball with life and also a low-60s curveball to silence the bats. Athletic and controlled on the mound, Daly is an intriguing follow.

RHP/INF Cole Woodward (Glenwood, 2028)
Woodward has a 5-foot-7, 130-pound athletic frame with room to fill out. Woodward proved himself to be a two-way player this past weekend, impressing us on the mound and in the infield. On the mound, Woodward is an athletic mover with a ¾ arm slot and short, clean arm action. His fastball sat 80-82 mph, and he paired it well with a 70-72 mph curveball. Offensively, Woodward went 3-for-3 with two doubles and six RBIs in the game against Athlete HQ Rockford. At the plate, he has a simple setup, twitchy hands, and loft to his swing. Woodward also made a handful of plays showing soft hands, good footwork, and the ability to throw from multiple slots. 

Quad City Select

CF Kellen VanKerrebroeck (Geneseo, 2028) 
VanKerrebroeck has a 5-foot-10 athletic frame. VanKerrebroeck showed off his power this weekend as we saw him leave the yard twice in one game. VanKerrebroeck is a good mover in center field with the ability to track down balls in the gap, along with a solid arm.

Top Tier Central 15U

LHP Karmy Kays (Normal University, 2028)
A lean, long-levered 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame. Impressed on the mound tossing a complete game, striking out 11 while allowing one run. Cross-fire delivery that creates deception. Low ¾ arm slot. Relied heavily on his 75-77 mph fastball.

16U

Canes Central Illinois - Casson

LHP Carson Mitchell (Morton, 2027)
An athletic 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame with room to add strength. Mitchell shined on Sunday as he threw five shutout innings, only allowing three runners on base. The left-hander operates from a stretch-only delivery with a high leg lift while having a tall/fall approach. Full, loose, clean arm action from a high ¾ slot. His fastball sat 80-83 mph with life through the zone. Mitchell mixed in a curveball that sat 70-72 mph with late actions that produced swings and misses.

INF Jude Parnham (Morton, 2027)
A strong 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame. Parnham impressed on Sunday as he went 2-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a small stride. Strong hands from a swing that is long through the zone. Connected on a single to center field in the fourth inning. Followed up with a line drive to right field for a triple in the fifth inning.

INF Grady Grisham (Pleasant Plains, 2026)
Grishman has an athletic  6-foot, 170-pound frame. Had an impressive day at the plate against the Warriors Torg 16U, going 1-for-3 with a home run in the first inning and three RBIs. Grisham showcased quality swings and an aggressive approach. Defensively, he has range to the glove-hand side and strong throws across. 

C Hudson Lovell (Morton, 2027)
Stands at a sturdy 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Has a stock setup with bent knees and a bit of a wide base. His hand and bat speed are very impressive, and has a compact swing with good barrel control. 

RHP/OF Trevor Ames (St. Joseph-Ogden, 2027) 
Currently ranked No. 97 in the 2026 class. On the mound, Ames offers an easy and loose delivery with athleticism down the mound. He offered a strong look at a mid-80s fastball that topped out at 86 mph, as well as a curveball with sharp 11/5 bite in the 68-71 mph range. At the plate, he has a simple approach with a small toe-tap trigger and keeps the barrel through the zone. 

Canes Central Illinois 16U - Semelroth

RHP Cooper Burnside (Dunlap, 2027)
A 5-foot-10, 163-pound frame with room to add strength. Burnside gave an upside look on Sunday as he threw four strong innings. The right-hander operates from a simple delivery with a high leg lift while having a drop/drive approach. Loose, full, clean arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 80-83 mph with life through the zone. Burnside mixed in a slider that sat 71-72 mph with late actions.

INF Dane Fagerburg (Brimfield, 2026)
A strong 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. Fagerburg had quite the game on Thursday as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. The left-handed hitter operates from a wide base with no stride. Strong hands from a compact swing with a slight uphill bat path. Connected on an RBI single to right field in the third inning. Followed up with a single to center field in the fifth. Drove in the winning run in the seventh inning on an RBI triple to right field. Showed a strong arm at third.

RHP Mason Phillips (Washington Comm, 2027)
Phillips has a 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. Moving very well on the mound with a  ¾ arm slot. Phillips’ fastball sat 80-82 mph, T83 mph. He paired his fastball with a tight 70-71 mph breaking ball.

RHP/SS Keegan Schol (Illinois Valley Central, 2027)
Stands in at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with room for added strength. Schol has a simple approach at the plate with a quality feel for the barrel, which helped him go 9-for-18 over the tournament. Also, a quality defender at short, Schol is a well-rounded player with advanced defensive instincts. On the mound Schol attacks hitters with a low-80s fastball, topping out at 85 mph. 

CF Bo Hoops (Canton, 2027)
An athletic 6-foot, 157-pound frame. Showed impressive bat-to-ball skills going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Balanced stance with a toe tape trigger. Flat bat path with the ability to spray the ball to all fields. Showcased range and a strong arm in center field.

Cangelosi Sparks 16U Gray

CF Tyler Mueller (Chicago St. Rita, 2027)
Athletic 5-foot-8, 155-pound frame with room to add strength. Mueller showed well Friday morning as he went 1-for-2 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a small stride. Compact swing with a flat bat path. Connected on a line drive to center field for a single in the fourth inning.

Cangelosi Sparks 16U Red

SS Donovan O’Connor (York, 2027) 
An athletic 5-foot-8, 155-pound frame. O’Connor had himself a day at the plate on Friday, collecting hits throughout two games. Wide setup with a small leg kick. Flat bat path, stayed on the barrel. Looks the part up the middle with clean actions and range.

1B Ashton Boyajian (Lockport, 2027)
A strong, athletic 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Showed off his powerful swing, hitting two home runs and two doubles on the weekend, with one of the home runs being a grand slam. Balanced, slightly open stance with a leg kick into a stride. Uphill swing plane looking to do damage. 

RHP Michael Morse (Newman Central Catholic, 2027)
A wiry 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame. Struck out three batters in three and ⅔ innings pitched. Simple, smooth delivery and works from a ¾ slot. Mainly went to the fastball that sat 79-82 mph T83 w/ life that generated swings and misses. Sprinkled in a breaking ball at 67-70 mph. 

Central Illinois Revolution

LHP Landon Ludwig (Ridgeview, 2028)
Projectable 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame. Ludwig impressed on Thursday as he struck out seven batters through four and ⅓  innings while not allowing an earned run. The left-hander operates from a simple delivery with a high leg lift while having a tall/fall approach. Full, clean, quick arm from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 80-83 mph with life through the zone. Mixed in a curveball that sat 66-68 mph with sharp, late actions and an 11/5 shape that produced swings/misses.

Chicago Elite Black

RHP Zachary Westerberg (Lincoln-Way East, 2027)
A strong 6-foot, 177-pound frame. Westerberg shined on Sunday as he struck out four batters through three innings. The right-hander operates from a simple delivery with a high leg lift while having a tall/fall approach. Long, loose, clean arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 80-83 mph with life through the zone. Mixed in a slider that sat 72-74 mph with sharp actions.

Chicago Warriors Green 2027

OF Nate Willman (Evanston, 2027)
Stands in at a long-levered 6-foot, 175-pound frame with plenty of room for added strength. At the plate, he has a tall stance with a narrow base and features a simple approach. His swing is short and compact which keeps a level plane. Had a nice weekend at the plate with a nice feel for the barrel. A name to keep an eye on as he heads into his junior season.

Delta Sports Performance 16U

CF Fabian Davis (Nicolet, 2027)
A lean, athletic 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame with room for added strength. Davis made loud contact all weekend with the bat. Wide setup with a simple load into a stride. Short to the ball with a flat bat path. Showcased range and quickness in the outfield. 

Elite Baseball Training Johnson

LHP Chris Chittaro (Saint Ignatius, 2027)
Stands in at a lean 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame with room for added strength. Chittaro showcased a good look on the mound from the left side, featuring a fastball up to that sat in the 78-82 mph range, along with a curveball that came with some sweep at 68-70 mph. He would also flash a changeup that sat in the mid-70s that played with depth. Chittaro delivers the ball with athleticism and ease, and throws out of a ¾ slot that could cause some discomfort for left-handed hitters. 

INF Mike Ruder (DePaul College Prep, 2027)
A high-waisted, 5-foot-9, 110-pound frame, with room to add strength. Ruder impressed Saturday night as he went 2-for-4 at the plate. The left-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a small leg lift. Loose hands from a compact swing. Connected on a single to right field in the third inning. Followed up with a bases-clearing triple to center field in the fourth inning.

GRB Rays Illinois Black 16U

RHP Bud Shanahan (Crystal Lake, 2027)
Stands in at a lean 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. Works straight down the mound and offered a lively pitch mix. Shanahan offered a fastball in the 78-81 mph range that jumps out of the hand, topping out at 82. He also offered a pair of secondaries with a 68-71 mph slider with late 10/4 bite, as well as a mid-70s changeup with heavy fade. 

GRB Rays Illinois White 16U

1B Max Backaus (Dundee-Crown, 2027)
A strong 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame. Backaus had a strong day on Thursday as he went 1-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a wide base with no stride. Strong hands with a compact swing and a pull-side approach. Connected on a hard grounder to left field for a single in the first inning and sent a line drive to left field in the fifth inning on a lineout.

CF Rylan Godfrey (Jacobs, 2027)
An athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with room to add strength. Godfrey showed well on Saturday as he went 2-for-2 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from an upright stance with a toe-tap trigger. Strong hands from a whippy swing with a flat bat path. Connected on a line drive to left field for a single in the first inning. Followed up with another line drive in the third inning, this time to center field for an RBI single.

GRB Rays Illinois Yellow

RHP Owen Kelley (Crystal Lake Central, 2027)
A long-levered 6-foot-2, 178-pound frame with more room to fill out. Showcased an upside look on the mound. Struck out four over five and ⅓  innings pitched. Smooth delivery, throwing from a ¾ slot. Fastball sat 80-82 mph with cut, and the slider played well off of it, sitting 67-68 mph.

C Spencer Kim (Huntley, 2027)
Stands in at a compact 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame, with room for more strength. Kim presents himself at the plate with a standard stance, with slightly bent knees, and has no wasted movement leading up to the pitch. With a slight leg lift to load, Kim has a level swing that was hitting the ball hard all game, and looked impressive at the plate. Also athletic behind the dish, there is some upside behind the plate. 

Halos 2027 Muma

SS Chase Muma (Wisconsin Lutheran, 2027)
An athletic 5-foot-6, 153-pound frame with room to add strength. Muma showed well on Friday as he went 1-for-2 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from an open base with a toe-tap trigger. Compact swing with quick hands and pull-side power. Connected on a solo home run over the left field fence in the fourth inning. Advanced actions at short with a strong arm to match.

INF Gavin Reilly (Mukwonago, 2027)
A high-waisted 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Reilly impressed on Saturday as he went 3-for-5 on the day. The right-handed hitter operates from a wide, balanced base with a small leg lift. Strong hands from a compact swing that is long through the zone. Drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly in the first inning. Reilly would follow up with an RBI triple into left field in the third inning.

LHP Nick Sievert (Kettle Moraine, 2027)
A 6-foot, 166-pound frame with room to add strength. Sievert shined on Thursday as he struck out six batters through four innings. The left-hander operates from a simple delivery with a high leg lift with tuck while having a drop/drive approach. Loose, full, clean arm action from a sidearm slot. His fastball sat 78-80 mph. Sievert mixed in a tight slider that sat 68-70 mph. 

INF Ayden Schneble (Wisconsin Lutheran, 2027)
Currently ranked No. 75 in the state. A high-waisted 6-foot-2, 172-pound frame with room to add strength. Schneble showed well on Saturday as he went 2-for-3 at the plate. The left-handed hitter operates from an open stance with a toe-tap trigger. Strong hands from a compact swing with a whole field approach. Connected on a line drive to center field for a single in the second inning. In the third, Schneble sent a line drive to right field for another single. 

Illinois Braves

INF Tanner Mast (Champaign Central, 2027)
An athletic 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Mast impressed Friday morning as he went 1-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a toe-tap. Compact swing with a flat bat path. In the third inning, Mast connected on a line drive to left field for a single. Smooth defender at second base.

RHP Ty Hunt (Champaign Centennial, 2027)

A high-waisted 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with room to add strength. Hunt was dominant Friday morning as he struck out seven batters in a four-inning complete game shutout. The right-hander operates from a simple, controlled delivery with a small leg lift while having a tall/fall approach. Compact, short, quick arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 77-80 mph while playing up in the zone. Hunt mixed in a curveball that sat 62-64 mph with late action.

INF Maxton Boddy (Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond, 2027)
An athletic 5-foot-8, 145-pound frame with room to add strength. Boddy had quite the game on Friday as he went 3-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a wide, balanced base with a small leg lift. Strong hands from a compact swing that is direct to the ball. In the first, Boddy drove in the first run of the game on a line drive to left field for an RBI single. Boddy would follow up in the second inning with an RBI double on the left field warning track. In his final plate appearance, Boddy would connect on a line drive to right field for an RBI single.

INF Hayden Bates (Saint Thomas More, 2027)
A high-waisted 6-foot-4, 155-pound frame with room to add strength. Bates impressed Friday morning as he went 3-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a small stride. Fluid hands with a compact swing, uses his long levers to attack pitches in various parts of the zone. Connected on an RBI double to center field in the first inning. In the second inning, Bates connected on another double, this time to the left-center gap to drive in two runs. In his final plate appearance, the first baseman sent a hard grounder back up the middle for an RBI single.

Mattoon Hit-Men

OF Ty Rhodes (Paris, 2028)
Athletic 5-foot-8 with room to add strength. Rhodes showed well Friday night as he went 1-for-4 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a small stride. Compact swing with a flat bat path. Connected on a double into the left-center gap to lead off the fifth inning.

SS Max Wetzel (Mattoon, 2028)
Athletic 5-foot-10 frame with room to add strength. Wetzel impressed Friday night as he went 2-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a wide base with a small stride. Compact swing that is direct to the ball. Connected on a line drive to right field for a single in the third inning. In the sixth inning, Wetzel drove a ball into right field for a two-run single. 

DH Madox Hutchings (Paris, 2027)
A strong 5-foot-10 frame. Hutchings shined Friday night as he went 1-for-2 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from a balanced base with a toe-tap trigger. Strong hands from a compact swing with a flat bat path. Drove a ball into right field for a sac fly in the first inning. Connected on a line drive to right field for an RBI single in the fifth inning. 

Mid-Illini Select

RHP Camden Vescogni (Washington, 2027)
A strong 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame. Vescogni was dominant on Friday as he struck out five batters through five innings. The right-hander operates from a simple, controlled delivery with a high leg lift while having a drop/drive approach. Compact, short, quick arm action with deception from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 79-82 mph while playing at the top of the zone. Vescogni mixed in a curveball that sat 65-68 mph with sharp actions that produced swings/misses.

OF Vaughn Bruer (Homeschool, 2027)
A strong 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame. Bruer showed well on Friday as he went 1-for-3 at the plate. The right-handed hitter operates from an open stance with a toe-tap trigger. Strong hands with a whole-field approach. Connected on a single to center field in the third inning. Sent a ball deep into center field for a flyout in the fourth inning.

Midwest Iron Lions

RHP Max Flack (Effingham, 2026)
A physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame. Flack impressed on Thursday as he struck out one batter through one inning, showing some impressive stuff. The right-hander operates from a simple delivery with a high leg lift with tuck while having a tall/fall approach. Full, clean, quick arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 82-85 mph with life through the zone. Also flashed a tight slider that sat in the low-70s. Interesting uncommitted 2026 arm to keep an eye on.

RHP Luke Himelick (Flora, 2027)
High-waisted 6-foot-3, 160-pound frame with room to add strength. Himelick shined on Thursday as he struck out four batters through three shutout innings. The right-hander operates from an easy, controlled delivery with a high leg lift with tuck while having a tall/fall approach. Long, loose, clean arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 80-82 mph while T84 mph. Himelick mixed in a slider that sat 70-71 mph with late action. 

RHP Charley Spour (St. Anthony, 2027)
Long-levered 6-foot-3, 183-pound frame. Spour showed electric stuff out of the bullpen. Struck out five over five and ⅓. Spour leaned on his upper-80s fastball that had life through the zone. He added a curveball at 71-74 mph; sharp with depth. A name to know in the 2027 class. 

Outlaws Baseball 16U

C/1B Noah Lusher (Illinois Valley Central, 2027)
Standing in at a physical 5-foot-10, 220-pound frame, Lusher has fast hands and fast bat speed that leads to some easy pop at the plate. The rising junior shows an ability to keep the barrel of the bat in the zone for a long time and produces some high-quality contact at the plate. There is a chance for some power potential in the bat, and is a name to keep an eye on.

QC Ducks

RHP Maddux Hermus (Kimberly, 2027)
Currently ranked No. 33 in the state. Strong 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame. Hermus flashed some loud stuff as he struck out seven batters through five and ⅔ innings. The right-hander operates from a simple, controlled delivery with a high leg lift while having a drop/drive approach. Loose, full, clean arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 83-86 mph with life through the zone. Hermus mixed in a slider that sat 73-74 mph with sharp actions.

RHP Aedan Waterstreet (Appleton North, 2027)
Standing in as a 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame, Waterstreet possesses the frame that is both projectable and ideal for a potential starting pitcher. Throughout the weekend, Waterstreet showcased a low to mid-80s fastball that came with arm-side run, as well as a mid-70s changeup with heavy fade. The rising junior also rounded out his arsenal with a high 60s curveball that came with some 11/5 bite. His delivery comes with ease, almost looking like he is throwing the ball effortlessly. A name to know going forward.

Rantoul Rush 16U

3B Owen Hartke (Iroquois West, 2027)
Hartke has a simple approach at the plate with an easy swing and a quality feel for the barrel that led to a strong weekend at the plate. Hitting out of the leadoff spot, he presents a slightly open stance and a toe tap trigger. There is little wasted movement in his swing and quick hands, both leading to easy pop off the bat. 

Rivets Select 16U 

RHPJonathan Andrist (Rochelle Township, 2027)
An athletic 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame. Struck out seven in four and ⅔ innings pitched. Smooth drop and drive delivery. Fastball sat 80-83 mph with swing and miss qualities. His secondary offering was a curveball at 72 mph.

Sages

RHP Zeke Young (Monticello, 2027)
Brother of Illinois commit, Ike Young. A lean, athletic 5-foot-8, 140-pound frame. Tossed three innings, allowing one run. Uptempo delivery messing with hitters' timing. Ran the fastball up to 81 mph with life. Mixed in a 67 mph breaking ball as well.

LHP Matthias Rudolph (Monticello, 2027)
A lean, long-levered 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame. Struck out seven over four innings of work. Delivery creates deception and hides the ball well. Fastball sat 80-82 mph with downward angle. Showcased a bullet slider at 70-72 mph.

Yard Goat Black

RHP Dalton York (St. Joseph-Ogden, 2027)
A lean, athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame with room to fill out. Struck out seven while throwing a complete game. Upright, slight cross-fire delivery from a ¾ slot. Used a two-pitch mix with a fastball and a breaking ball. Held fastball velocity throughout sitting 78-80 mph T81. Went to the breaking ball often for strikes and swing and misses, sitting 71-73 mph with sharp break and depth.

17U

17U Central State Spikes

RHP Tyler Henry (Tolono Unity, 2026)
Uncommitted. Athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame with room to add strength. Henry shined on Saturday as he struck out eight batters through five innings. The right-hander operates from a simple, uptempo delivery with a high leg lift while having a drop/drive approach. Compact, short, quick arm action from a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 85-87 mph while playing up in the zone. Henry also mixed in a tight slider that sat 71-74 mph while producing swings/misses.

RHP Gavin Addis (Teutopolis, 2026)
Uncommitted.  Currently ranked No. 132 in the 2026 class. Standing in at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, there is room for added strength. On the mound, he has an easy delivery with a loose arm action that comes out of a ¾ slot.
