North Carolina Class of 2028: Fall Rankings Update
With the conclusion of the fall season, Prep Baseball North Carolina releases its latest rankings update for the Class of 2028. This fall edition encompasses performances from Prep Baseball’s underclass Top Prospect Games, the Prep Baseball Fall Championships, various scout days, and additional player coverage from across the state. While typically a smaller lift than the preseason or post-summer updates, this fall ranking refresh provides critical insight into emerging talent and primes our scouting staff for the upcoming preseason coverage.
This update expands the Class of 2028 rankings from 140 to 165 players, adding 27 new names to the list. Several players also improved their internal grades and, consequently, their rankings following standout fall performances. While there are no changes to the Top 10, the fall season offered additional context for the strength and depth of the class, setting the stage for the pre-spring rankings update and the spring high school season.
The Rankings Process
Prep Baseball’s ranking methodology is structured, thorough, and impartial. Player evaluations are built on live scouting, event data, and video review. Once graded, players are entered into a class-specific database. To minimize bias, all identifying information is temporarily removed, allowing the rankings to be sorted solely on grades and measurable tools. Names are then reintroduced, and final adjustments are made to ensure accuracy and fairness.
For positional rankings, the process begins with the overall class rankings. Once the rankings are finalized, the scouting staff reviews how players align within their designated positions. Positional rankings provide context for understanding the balance of talent at each spot, though they are not always a direct indicator of a player’s long-term defensive home.
