Hawaii Class of 2028: Rankings Update

As Fall comes to a close and the High School season approaches, we’re excited to release our update for the Class of 2028 Hawaii Player Rankings. The list now features 25 of the state’s top prospects, reflecting the impact of standout performances throughout the spring and summer months. From strong showings in high school competition to dominant outings at summer Prep Baseball events, players have continued to refine their skills and strengthen their résumés. This latest update not only highlights those making significant strides but also sets the stage for the upcoming fall circuit as the prestigous Future Games looms next summer for these sophomores.
As always, our evaluation process is fluid and ongoing, built on multiple viewings and discussions to get the most accurate feel for each player’s abilities. It’s worth noting that while some players show rapid improvement, this doesn’t suggest that others have regressed—player development is simply a journey with peaks and valleys. As the season unfolds, new names will continue to surface, expanding the universe of top prospects in Hawaii. In addition to our player evaluations, our scouts—both in-state and nationally—have been in constant dialogue, comparing notes and making adjustments based on the latest insights to ensure the rankings are as up-to-date and accurate as possible.

THE TOP-10 IN THE CLASS OF 2028 ⭐

Kai Watanabe C / OF / Henry Perrine Baldwin, HI / 2028The Baldwin / Hawaii Elite product has been a staple at the top of the Hawaii 2028 Class Rankings with obvious, elite level tools present on both sides of the ball. His game was on full display at the inaugural Super Sophomore Games at the University of Oregon, where he earned the events Top Catcher Pop Time at 1.85 with his throws just around or at the bag. At the plate, his compact swings has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields with authority with the help of his advanced approach that we only anticipate to continue trending over the next few years.

Kekoanui Payanal SS / 2B / Punahou, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 1
The sure-handed shortstop out of Punahou continue to see his game trend after his standout performance at the Super Sophomore Games earlier this Fall. Payanal has already begun to make a name for himself in Hawaii’s 2028 Class with confident actions on the defensive side of the ball to go with his consistent feel for the barrel, driving the ball to the big part of the yard. Playing with a high baseball IQ, he seems to always been on base and making things happen to put himself in a position to score. This is another high level player at the top of a deep 2028 Class in the Aloha State.

AJ Wida C / OF / Punahou, HI / 2028With catching always at a premium, Hawaii’s 2028 Class is lead by a pair of high level players that we expect to be off the board quickly after the Recruitment Opening Day of August 1. Wida made an immediate impression the Prep Baseball Staff at the inaugural Super Sophomore Games with his 1.89 Catcher Pop Time that showed off his present quickness in both his feet and transfer to get the ball out. At the plate, after putting in an impressive BP Session on Day 1 of the event, he showed off his in game ability racking up multiple barrels to prove his actions translate in-game.

Jaron Lancaster SS / 2B / Punahou, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 4 / POS: 2
Hawaii is on an incredible streak of producing high level middle infielders with two Hawaiian shortstops taken in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. The Aloha State is not slowing down with Lancaster continuing to show that he has the overall game to assert his name in the lineage of high level shortstops. The smooth, confidence defensive action pair with a level, consistent swing that has flashes of power potential, especially to the pull side, makes this another high follow type player. |

Brock Ayudan SS / 2B / Kamehameha Hawaii, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 5 / POS: 3
One of the highest risers over the past year has been Hawaii Wood Bat Academy product, Brock Ayudan. The added physical strength and size has taken his game to another level with the ball now beginning to jump off of his bat, evident by his three doubles off the wall at the Super Sophomore Games earlier this Fall. The smooth, efficient left-handed stroke is only going to continue producing hits to all fields with more power to come as he adds more strength to his 5’8/143 pound frame. Defensively, he stacks up with any shortstop not only in this Hawaii Class, but in the West Region, showing present feel for the forehand and backhand plays to with fluid, confident actions through the ball. Keep an eye on Ayudan as a player who could continue making his way up the ‘28 Class Rankings as he continues to mature.

Dayton-Micheal Hanson RHP / 1B / Kamehameha, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 6 / POS: 1
Arguably no one's stock has risen more than Hawaii Wood Bat Academy’s Dayton-Michael Hanson. At a Prep Baseball Verified, 6-foot-5, 201.7 lbs., he has the physical stature that is highly sought after with plenty of room to still had strength. With the two-way player becoming more and more valuable, though he is a primary arm, he showed off his impression offensive tools earlier this year with a 101.4 mph Velocity Exit Velocity that he followed up with a pair of triples at the Super Sophomore Games. On the mound, he ran his fastball up to 86 mph with with later arm side action to go with his improved slider, striking out 6 over his 3 innings of work. Expect it see Hanson’s stock continue t to rise over the next few years.

Noah Andrew Castillo RHP / OF / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 7 / POS: 2
Already making a name for himself as one of the top upcoming arms to come out of the Aloha State, Castillo had his game on full display at the Hawaii State Games in June, he continued to prove himself at the 15U National Championships where he ran his fastball up to 89 mph with his improved slider flashing late, tighter action when it tunnels off fastball. At the Super Sophomore Games, he got the nod to start Game 1 of the event where he struck out 5 over his three innings of work, proving his ability to compete among the top players in the region.

Chase Kawakami SS / 3B / Saint Louis, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 4
Another Riser in the Hawaii 2028 Class after his impressive performance at the inaugural Super Sophomore Games. His present feel at the plate that produces consistent barrels lead to multiple hits during the events with even more quality at-bats produced. Defensively, his clean, smooth actions project to hold him at shortstop, especially with is projected improvement in his foot speed that he trended positively each time out with us.

Devyn Lee Rosaga 3B / SS / Henry Perrine Baldwin, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 9 / POS: 1
Coming in at #9 is high level infielder that announced his presence among the top players at the inaugural Super Sophomore Games. Flashing improved actions throughout his game, the Baldwin / Hawaii Elite product has flashes improved footwork through the ball with an easy, 89 mph Infield Velocity that ranked him 2nd among all Infielders at the SSG25. At the plate, he has always shown natural feel for the barrel with the ability drive the ball to the big part of the yard with his power now starting to shine through as well. Keep an eye on Rosaga as he continue to see his game improve each time out with us and we will be excited the see the next advances he has made in his game at the Hawaii Preseason All-State.

Case Cannon SS / C / Kaiser, HI / 2028Rankings StateRank: 10 / POS: 5
Cannon is another standout infielder in this deep Hawaii 2028 Class that has continued to see his game trend over the past two years. A standout early on at the 2024 Junior Future Games, then continued to show off his game at the inaugural Super Sophomore Games with improved numbers each time out with us. The Kaiser High product is expected to make an early impact for the Cougars this Spring.
