Texas State Games Underclass: Quick Hits

On Saturday, November 8th, the PB Texas staff traveled to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, to host the Texas State Games: Underclass, an invite-only event for the class of 2028 and 2029.

More than 80 players made their way to Sam Houston this past weekend and participated in a pro-style workout as well as gameplay, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, while receiving in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Texas staff.

Today, we will provide our scouting takeaways on some of the event's biggest winners.

HITTERS

Landon Bonner | SS/2B/CF | Hebron | 2028 | 5’8” 149 | R/R

Athletic, great build/frame to add strength. Quickness present with developing explosiveness. Plus runner, 6.78 60, 4.29/4.31 on turns. Actions present defensively, plays somewhere in the middle of the diamond at the next level. Raw arm strength has improved and will continue to add raw arm strength. Confident stepping into box, he can hit, shows pull side power. Prospect in 2028.

Cash Curtis | SS/2B | Grand Oaks | 2028 | 5’10” 146 | R/R

Nice build/frame to add strength in future. 6.81 60, plus runner. Developing actions defensively. Avg arm future. Swing works, will have ability to impact baseball in future as he adds strength and physical maturity. Solid AB’s in game play with multiple extra base hits. Will develop.

Hunter Heinrich | SS | Tomball | 2028 | 5’10” 151 | R/R

Great build/frame. Defensively moves well with actions present. Arm works showing ability to throw from all angles on the move. Solid hit approach creating line drive contact, power will develop. Will get stronger. Interesting player to watch over next couple of years.

Riley Thompson | 3B/OF | Rouse | 2029 | 6’1” 185 | R/R

Great build/frame to add strength. 6.97 60. Corner guy on infield, feet work, hands developing. Can play OF. Arm strength will firm. Bat speed present with ability to hit balls hard off barrel, some length to swing, not afraid to let it fly with bat. Interesting at plate, watch develop.

Levi Abrego | INF | Iowa Colony | 2028 | 5’11” 187 | R/R

Strong build, width to shoulders and back, projects well physically. 6.78 60. Solid infielder with actions, athletic play in game. Carry to throws present, raw arm strength will continue to develop. Bat speed with ability to impact baseball. Hit approach developing.

Austin Hanel | 1B/OF | Concordia Lutheran | 2028 | 6’3” 200 | R/R

Build/frame to add strength, solid now. 6.96 60. Moves well around bag at 1st, hands work. Carry to throws present, arm strength will continue to develop. Hard off barrel with 101 exit velo, bat speed present. Battled at plate in game play. Big, strong, bat speed with ability to impact baseball.

Jordan Owens | SS/OF | Glenn | 2029 | 5’6” 153 | R/R

Good build/frame to add needed strength. 7.15 60. Feet work well on the infield, developing actions. Swing works, added strength in future will firm ability to impact baseball. Watch progress in future.

Reid Overstreet | OF/LHP | Rockwall | 2028 | 6’0” 180 | L/L

Nice build/frame, will continue to add strength. 7.19 60. Solid, steady OF, throws have carry. Like bat/power combo in future. Hard contact in BP. Solid AB’s in game play. Ability to impact baseball will continue to develop. Hitter to watch over next couple of years.

Graham Barton | SS | Colleyville Heritage | 2029 | 5’11” 150 | R/R

Good frame/build to add strength in future. 7.04 60, plus runner in future. Actions present at SS, makes plays. Raw arm strength will develop, arm works. Developing at plate, bat speed and impact will firm in future. Young infielder who will develop.

Maddox Bryant | INF | Kingwood | 2029 | 5’11” 163 | R/R

Solid build/frame, will add strength. 6.93 60. Feet work on the infield, actions developing. Nice hit approach showing power to pull side. Quality AB’s in game play, pull HR in left on left situation against solid arm. Tools, player to watch.

Antonio Gil | SS/2B | Mansfield | 2029 | 5’10” 187 | R/R

Athletic. Solid build/frame showing some now strength, will continue to develop. 6.72 60. Actions on defense, shows quickness to feet. Carry to throws present. Hard contact in BP, carried over into game play including 2B to RCF. Watch progress.

Trey Brooks | SS | Goose Creek | 2028 | 5’11” 150 | R/R

Projects well physically. 7.18 60. Actions developing on the infield. Carry to throws present, shows arm strength. Ability to impact baseball will firm with strength. Solid contact in game play with 3 hits including couple of extra base hits. Nice upside.

Ryan Chism | SS/OF | Friendswood | 2028 | 5’10” 170 | R/R

Good build/frame to add increases strength. 7.13 60. Solid actions present on the infield. Carry to throws present, shows some raw arm strength now. Aggressive swinger showing some bat speed. Solid AB’s in game play, produced 3 extra base hits. Player to watch.

Amari Maxwell | SS/2B | Weiss | 2028 | 5’6” 174 | L/L

Solid build, strength to lower, will add strength. Athletic. 6.99 60. Developing actions on the infield. Carry to throws, showed ability to make throws from angles on the move. LHH shows bat speed with hard line drive contact in BP. Solid approach in game play, using all fields with 4 hits on the weekend, handles bat. Watch progress.

Tony Ciurca | SS | Clear Falls | 2028 | 5’11” 159 | R/R

Great build/frame to add strength in future. 6.97 60, plus runner in future. Actions present on the infield. Can throw, carry present. Shows ability to make throws from angles on the move. Solid hit approach producing solid contact in BP. Carried over into game play with hard hit balls. Player to watch develop.

Matthew Heredia | MIF | Southlake Carroll | 2028 | 5’9” 175 | R/R

Solid build/frame, will add strength. 7.20 60. Actions on defense, carry to throws present. Shows solid contact off barrel in BP, aggressive swinger. Couple of hard hit balls in game play including double. Knows how to play the game. Watch progress.

Hudson Brown | OF/1B | China Spring | 2028 | 6’0” 190 | R/R

Solid build with good frame/build to add more strength. Athletic, 6.90 60. Steady OF’r, carry to throws present, ability to play all 3 OF spots. Hard contact in BP, pull side power. Quality AB’s in game play, couple of hits including double. Watch develop.

Zach Barnes | INF | Rockwall | 2028 | 6’2” 198 | R/R

Solid build/frame for strength, projects well. Runs hard. Developing actions defensively, ability to play either corner spot. Showed carry to throws. Ability to impact ball in BP, showed power. Solid AB’s in game play. Corner guy looking for power to firm.

Deacon Chase | OF | Victoria East | 2028 | 5’10” 151 | R/R

Frame/build projects well for added strength. 7.13 60. Solid defender, shows off raw arm strength. Solid swing, contact to all fields, carried over to game play. Watch develop.

Maverick Walker | OF | Hallsville | 2028 | 5’11” 152 | R/R

Great build/frame to add strength. 7.29 60. Can play defense, throws have carry showing off raw arm strength. Moves well in OF. Shows ability to handle bat, hard contact in game play. Player to watch in future.

Nate May | SS/2B | Episcopal Dallas | 2028 | 5’10” 167 | L/R

Will get stronger, good frame/build. 6.84 60. Actions present on defense, shows range. Carry to throws with ability to throw from all angles on the move. Solid contact, power will develop, hit approach present. Good AB’s in game play. Player to watch develop.

Sean Burgess | OF | Clear Falls | 2028 | 6’1” 175 | R/R

Solid build/frame to add strength. 6.86 60. Steady defender with ability to play CF. Raw arm strength is developing. Bat speed present, shows ability to impact baseball in BP. Hit approach developing. Player who will have ability to leave the yard, athletic. Watch develop.

Max Feimster | INF | Santa Fe | 2028 | 6’0” 190 | R/R

Great build/frame to add to strength present now. 6.98 60. Feet work well defensively, actions firming. Shows bat speed with some length, flashes raw power in BP. Aggressive swinger in game play. Raw tools present.

Cooper Albart | C | Arlington Martin | 2028 | 6’2” 210 | R/R

Solid build/frame, will add strength. Received well in game play. Pop times in workout 1.87–2.00 showing carry to throws with raw arm strength present. Showed pull side power in BP. Hard contact in game play with couple of doubles.

Paxton Arkeen | C | Bridge City | 2028 | 5’10” 215 | R/R

Thick build, will add strength. Pop times in workout 1.94–2.05. Felt he received and moved well behind plate. Hard, line drive contact in BP. Battled at plate for a couple of hits, including extra base hit to RCF.

Brody Sharp | C | Rouse | 2028 | 6’0” 195 | R/R

Good build/frame showing some now strength, athleticism. 1.95–2.07 pop times in workout. Showed carry to throws when everything synched up. Showed bat speed with ability to impact baseball, inconsistent finding barrel. Handled pitchers in game play. 7.16 60. Will continue to improve.

Lawsen Gary | C | Port Neches-Grove | 2028 | 5’11” 180 | R/R

Nice build/frame to add strength. Pop times in workout 1.94–2.06, quickness to release over raw arm strength. Solid contact in BP using all fields. Solid AB’s in game with 2B to RF.

Caleb Cardenas | C | College Park | 2028 | 5’10” 170 | R/R

Good build/frame to add strength. 7.24 60, can throw with raw arm strength present. Pop times in workout 1.93–1.97. BP solid round with ability to barrel baseball. Game play AB’s were quality, used whole ballpark.

Colton Castro | C | Ridge Point | 2029 | 5’8” 150 | R/R

Will add strength in future. 7.14 60. Moved well behind plate, 1.93–2.05 pop times in workout, raw arm strength will develop. 2.09 caught stealing in game play, accurate throw. Receiving will firm. Shows bat speed in BP.

Jacoby Gomez | C | WB Ray | 2029 | 5’8” 220 | R/R

Solid build/frame, thickness/strength to lower present. 1.97–2.08 pop times in workout, quickness to release over arm strength. Received well in game play. Bat speed present, showed hard contact off barrel in BP. Couple of hits in game play including hard hit 1B to CF.

PITCHERS

Cooper Knight | LHP | Buda Johnson | 2029 | 6’2” 180 | L/L

Arm works, showing arm speed. Delivery can be firmed. FB up 86, worked 83-86, tailing action present, avg life at times. Flashes solid blended breaking ball, flashed avg action/finish. Feel for change present tail/sink action with deception. 2029 LHP flashing stuff, look for velocity to continue to improve as well as further development of secondary. Definite follow for pro guys.

Yates Ashley | LHP | Katy | 2028 | 6’3” 205 | L/L

Solid build, frame to add strength in future. Arm works well with arm speed present, extension present. FB topped at 89 with tail, tail/sink action. Feel for slider present, shows ability to manipulate action, +2300 spin. Upside, will continue to improve. Definite follow for pro guys.

Brody Alcoser | LHP | Sonia Sotomayor | 2028 | 6’0” 147 | L/L

Athletic LHP with plenty of room to add strength. Arm works well, solid delivery, repeats. Strike thrower. FB will develop in future. Can spin baseball showing feel for action up to 2500 spin. Projection LHP, athletic, arm works, will get stronger, can spin it. Watch progress.

Lucas Strawn | RHP | Summer Creek | 2028 | 6’0” 171 | R/R

Will add strength and size. Arm works well, easy with extension out front. FB up touched 91 early. Worked 85-89. Slurvy action to breaking ball, short breaker. Straight change, developing feel for pitch. Strike thrower. Easy with arm speed, will get stronger, one to watch develop. Follow for pro guys.

William Broussard | RHP | McKinney North | 2028 | 6’3” 195 | R/R

Good build/frame to add strength in future. Solid delivery, arm works. Strike thrower. FB velocity will develop, 84-86 with 2400 spin. Solid down plane, shows carry up in zone. Can spin breaking ball, (2500) action varies, flashes solid finish. Change shows tail/sink action to arm side, feel for pitch present. Upside. Watch progress.

Henry Kuenstler | RHP | Rockwall Heath | 2029 | 6’0” 141 | R/R

Projects well physically, will add strength. FB up to 85, will continue to develop. Feel for CB and Change present. CB with depth, 12-6 action. Turnover change with action/deception, plus movement. Slider developing. Must firm delivery. Command and control will firm. Upside, definite one to watch.

Trey Brooks | RHP | Goose Creek | 2028 | 5’11” 150 | R/R

Solid frame, build to add strength. Repeats delivery. Compact arm circle with arm speed. FB up to 86, worked 83-86, strikes. Slider shows solid action with 11-5 break. Change with deception, tail/sink action. Watch develop.

Cooper Albart | RHP | Arlington Martin | 2028 | 6’2” 210 | R/R

Solid build/frame to add strength. Stretch only delivery. Full circle with length to arm action, arm speed present. FB worked 84-87, touched 88. Carry present, 2400 spin rate to FB. CB 70-74, downer to 11-5 action, depth present. Can spin baseball up to 2500. Limited use change. Interesting on the mound. Catches also, will have QH notes as catcher.

Caleb Kahoalii | RHP | Cypress Woods | 2029 | 5’9” 180 | R/R

Solid build with thickness/strength to lower. Solid delivery and arm action. FB 83-86, touched 87, shows carry up in zone, 2400 spin. Feel for slider with ability to vary action, 71-73, spin shows 2200+. Change with tail/sink action with deception. Young arm to watch progress.

Logan Starnes | RHP | Dripping Springs | 2028 | 6’4” 190 | R/R

Great build/frame, will continue to add strength. Solid delivery, repeats. Arm works fine with cutoff circle, LTQ slot, arm speed will continue to develop. FB 84-86, touched 87, quality FB down in zone. CB with slurvy type action, 70-75, showed 2400 spin, solid finish at times. Stuff played well down in zone. Will continue to improve.

Tony Ciurca | RHP | Clear Falls | 2028 | 5’11” 160 | R/R

Athletic with good frame/build to add strength. Arm works, repeats delivery, slight head jerk present. FB 83-86, shows arm side tailing action, some carry up. Blended breaking, 70-73 with solid action at times, must firm release point for consistency. Feel for change with deception present. Fair strike thrower this outing. Athlete on the mound, will continue to improve. Mid Infielder also.

Caleb Cardenas | RHP | College Park | 2028 | 5’10” 170 | R/R

Solid build/frame. Full circle with some length, stretch only delivery, repeats with opportunities to firm. FB 84-86, some sink down in zone with occasional arm side tail. Feel to spin slider present showing solid action at times. Will continue to develop on the mound.

Mateo Rodriquez | RHP | Cornerstone Christian | 2028 | 5’9” 174 | R/R

Athletic with solid build/frame. QB in football. Repeat solid delivery and arm action, shows developing arm speed. FB 83-86 this outing, have seen him work 87-89 at 2 outings this summer. Slider 73-76 with 2300+ spin, 11-5 action showing solid finish. Change 70-73, turnover type with tail/sink. Athletic, arm works, will improve.

Aiden Beck | LHP | Wylie | 2028 | 6’3” 181 | L/L

Great build/frame to grow into. Length to arms, high waisted. Solid arm action, works well. Delivery will firm. FB 81-84, late tailing action present. Showed some developing ability to add/subtract with FB. Not sure he did on purpose, but was effective. CB 69-71, big breaker with depth, teased ability to manipulate action, mainly 1-7 break today. Great build, lanky. Arm works, will continue to improve.

Brennan Ball | RHP | Brewer | 2029 | 5’10” 155 | R/R

Projects well physically. Solid delivery and arm action, works well, arm speed will develop. FB worked 80-82, 84. Tail, tail/sink action, around plate. Blended breaking ball with occ 2300+ spin. Showed feel for pitch, will develop. Change 74-76 with quality action, deception developing. Watch progress.

Seeley Peters | RHP | Edna | 2028 | 6’5” 165 | R/R

Long and lanky, nice build/frame to add strength. Full circle works well, arm speed will develop. Repeats delivery. FB worked 79-82, 84 tops, 2400 spin. Solid down plane with some carry up. Feel for slider present with 11-5 action. Around zone with stuff. Projection RHS, looks right on the mound, body/arm action that you can dream on.
