2027 Top-10 Uncommitted: Catchers

With the fall and summer circuits behind us and the 2027 State Rankings being released at the end of the summer, we’re taking a look at some of the top uncommitted players within this update. Today, we are taking a look at the top-10 uncommitted catchers. This list is full of impact bats and defenders that are still looking for a home.

Grady Cheever C / SS / Germantown, WI / 2027From 7/31/25: "Future Games 2025: C/INF Grady Cheever (Germantown) was a big winner from the weekend, finishing 4-for-10 across the weekend with three RBIs at the plate. Cheever stands in at 6-foot, 158-pounds and still has plenty of room for added strength. As a switch-hitting catcher, Cheever offers one of the more intriguing skillsets within the class at the plate, and has shown potential at the catching position with his natural actions behind the dish. Currently ranked No. 9 in the 2027 class, Cheever is a well-rounded prospect that had himself a strong overall weekend at the 2025 Future Games." |

Haaken Hovestol C / 3B / Delavan-Darien, WI / 2027Rankings StateRank: 18 / POS: 4
From 7/31/25: "Hovestol continues to impress in front of out staff, the backstop showcased well as well as putting together eye opening at bats in gameplay and continuing to elevate his status as one of the top cathers in the state. In the showcase, Hovestol ran a 6.99 60-yard dash and flashed a pop time range of 2.15-2.26 while throwing 74 mph from the chute. In BP, the LHH had a max EV of 96 mph with an avg, of 89 mph and a max distance of 344'. In gameplay, had a hit and walked twice in two games. Hovestol had a loud fly out to center in gameplay as well. A prospect that has added strength recently and is one to follow from the event." |

Tyler Flemming C / 2B / Waukesha North, WI / 2027Rankings StateRank: 30 / POS: 5
From 3/28/25: "C Tyler Flemming (Waukesha North, 2027) is an athletic backstop who can hit, defend and run. Flemming started his day with an impressive 7.06 seconds 60 yard dash showing quick burst and quick turnover. He then showcased a strong left handed swing making loud contact throughout his round and produced 93 mph off the bat and averaged 87 mph. On defense, Flemming’s pop time was 2.01 seconds with a quick transfer and accurate throws on the bag. He shows an advanced feel for the catching position in general and continues to be a player our staff really likes." |

Ethan Miller C / 3B / Slinger, WI / 2027Rankings StateRank: 40 / POS: 6
From 4/12/25: "Uncommitted, one of the top catchers in the state’s sophomore class. Compact strength at his 5-foot-10, 196 pound frame. Miller hit clean up while handling the catching behind the plate, collecting two hits across three at bats with an RBI, walking once. At the plate, the right-handed hitter took some of the better at-bats in the lineup, flashing bat-to-ball traits while using the entire field throughout the game. Defensively Miller is a steady defender with catch and throw traits that can easily translate at the next level." |

Tyler Smeiska C / OF / Mukwonago High, WI / 2027Rankings StateRank: 48 / POS: 7
From 2/26/25: "C Tyler Smeiska (Mukwonago, 2027) proved why he is a ranked player in our 2027 class with an impressive showing on Sunday. Smeiska possesses considerable strength in his hands and in his compact frame overall. The backstop measured at a 5-foot-7, 166 pounds with athletic proportions. He was all over the barrel throughout his round showcasing quite a bit of fluidity and hitability with the bat. His 95 mph max EV was one of the top marks among the 2027 group. His throwing arm from behind the plate has really ticked up and was 80 mph from the crouch in throwing runners out. He also registered a solid 2.05 pop time from behind the plate. Smeiska is a name to know in the state." |

Alex Solberg C / 1B / New Richmond, WI / 2027Rankings StateRank: 66 / POS: 8
From 7/31/25: "Alex Solberg, C/1B (New Richmond): Powerful 6-foot-3, 217-pound frame. The right handed hitter took one of the loudest rounds of batting practice reaching a peak exit velocity of 100.3 mph with, which translated to the games, where he hit a home run out to left-center field in game one. Athlete with strength and feel for the barrel at the plate, defensively Solberg plays with steady actions and athletiscm behind the plate." |

From 3/28/25: "C/INF/RHP Oliver Heckelsmiller (Verona Area, 2027) showed quality competitor traits and evident baseball acumen. The Verona Area product would show well defensively as both a catcher and infielder, with an event-best 1.99 pop time, active footwork on the dirt, with an accurate arm that generated throws up to 81 mph from across the diamond. At the plate, the right-handed bat would present an even, athletic setup with a well-sequenced swing that would generate EVs up to 90.9 mph. On the mound, the right-handed arm showed a quick, clean 3/4 release while working from an athletic rocker step delivery with a crossfire finish. The fastball would sit upper-70s-low-80s and was thrown alongside an upper-60s curveball and a changeup that would sit around 74 mph. 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame." |
