New Jersey Class of 2028: Rankings Update

TJ Hunt
Director, Prep Baseball NJ

With the fall circuit in the books, it is time for a final rankings update before the winter season really kicks into high gear. There is not much overall movement in this update with only a few players seeing some jumps although many more having joined the list since our last update.

The Top Three

Our top two players possess some of the best raw talent in the Northeast in RHP James Fenton (Metuchen) and RHP Parker Klug (Delbarton). Both are physically gifted at 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-4, respectively, and have both been into the low-90s in the late summer, early fall circuit. Klug is a true two-way prospect who can also play the outfield, while Fenton's ability to spin the ball along with his whippy, clean arm action and lanky, athletic frame will certainly be a problem for varsity hitters this spring.

RHP/3B Anthony Huaranga (St. Peter's Prep) boasts a similar stature to Fenton and Klug, although with some added muscle already for his age. Huaranga was up to 90 mph during the spring in a solid outing versus St. Joe's Montvale as a freshman; and at the plate he's just as formidable. Broad shouldered 6-foot-2 231-pounds.

Knocking on the Top 10

SS Jackson Soos (Wall Township) has the physical traits to be an impact bat at the next level and the arm strength and hands to play the left side of the infield. I could see him sliding over to third base in college, but make no mistake on his defensive tools already - he can pick it and hit for extra bases on top of it.

SS Luca Catanzarite (Immaculata) is a guy we've seen several times over the last couple of years at various events and continues to showcase his innate ability to be on time regardless of the velocity, and to find the barrel too. It seems like every time we see him he's put together a tough at bat and has somehow made his way into scoring position, whether it be driving one into the gap or working his way on and swiping a bag or two.

RHP/OF Braden Cox (Ranney) made a solid name for himself at the Super Sophomore Games in August, especially at the plate. It's polished and repeatable with easy juice to the middle of the field.

SS Quinn Barron (Delbarton), much like the aforementioned Catanzarite, is a guy who consistently puts together solid showings both in games and at showcases. 88 mph across the infield 7.00 runer and 95 mph off the bat paints a picture of a solid athlete at this juncture. However, it's the knack for the barrel, poise in the field at SS, and ability to slow the game down at the plate that has separated Barron thus far.

Top Newcomers

C Abraham Katz (Collingswood) has worked hard to transform his frame into a top end athlete. At this point last year he was still coming into his own as an athlete - but at the Fall Top Prospect Games, Katz separated himself from the pack posting a sub-2.00 pop time in the showcase workout and 79 mph arm strength from behind the dish. What really stood out when taking in all the numbers was his event-best vertical jump height 27.3 in., which is a strong predictor of current and future athleticism.

C Trip Hegarty (Gill St. Bernards) has the build at 6-foot-1 212-pounds to stand out on the field and has steadily improved his catch and throw skills over the last few times we've seen him too. The power projection is there at the plate and I'm certainly looking forward to getting a chance to see him in action this spring.

More to Come

1B/OF Luke Cusack (Delbarton) was among the top overall performers from the Fall Top Prospect Games and certainly separated himself in terms of offensive power production. He was still nursing an injury that kept him out of some of the additional parts of the event, but Cusack's raw power from the right side is real.

LHP/1B Matthew Filiaci (Seton Hall Prep) is another guy who stood out this summer offensively and is working his way back from an arm injury that kept him off the mound for the large part of 2025. Strong 6-foot 210-pound frame.

C Addison Adornato - athletic build at 5-foot-8 170-pounds with room to fill out. Adornato impressed with his catch and throw ability and fluidity to his swing in the summer. Expect Adornato to add some muscle as he heads into 2026 as one of the top underclassmen on Governor Livingston, the state's No. 1 team.
