This was an open event for high school classes (2026-29), and gave our staff an ample look at the development of some of the top talent in the area and introduced our staff to new names to know after their performances.

27 players made their way to Maranatha Christian this past week and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners (VALD, Blast Motion, and TrackMan) as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball California staff.

Today, we will be looking at some of the top performers from the event and for more information including stats from the event, click here.

San Diego Summer ID: Top Performers

Tyler Maula C / OF / Eastlake, CA / 2026

Maula put together one of the louder rounds of batting practice at the San Diego Summer ID, showcasing pull-side power with intent to lift the baseball. A physical 5-10, 188-pound frame, Maula generated standout impact at the plate with a max exit velocity of 100.3 mph and an average of 95.7. He launched seven home runs across two rounds of BP, including a peak distance of 375 feet, flashing a heavy barrel with an impressive 87.5% hard hit rate and 62.5% sweet spot rate. Offensively, it’s an aggressive swing that works to elevate and get the bat head out in front and extended. Defensively, Maula showed solid catch-and-throw ability behind the dish with a 1.99-2.05 pop time and 79 mph catcher velocity which led all catchers participating in the event. The transfer is quick and the hand is behind the ear at release point. Transferring to Eastlake HS for his senior year, Maula can step in and help a Titans squad that made the SD Section: Open Division Semifinals this past spring.

Lucas Johnson 2B / 3B / Carlsbad, CA / 2026

Johnson showed the ability to perform in live game looks this spring and it was no different in a workout setting. The 5-8, 154-pound infielder impressed with an event best 6.90 60-yard dash and showed sneaky pop at the plate, which can go under the radar due to his compact frame. Johnson posted a 94.8 mph max exit velocity (88.5 mph avg.) with a 360’ max batted distance. He homered multiple times in BP and his Blast Motion metrics were strong across the board and among the leaders from the event, with swing metrics including a 73.4 average bat speed (75.8 max) and rotational acceleration peaking at 28.3 Gs (22.0 avg). He produced consistent hard contact (58.3% hard hit & sweet spot rates), flashing a compact, quick stroke with barrel accuracy. Defensively, he showed sound actions with a 78 mph arm velocity and is a 2B/3B profile with 2B looking like the more natural long-term spot as things currently stand. There is a lot to like with Johnson’s game as he plays with a hard-nosed edge and winning mentality.

Trevor Hoff C / 1B / Classical Academy, CA / 2026

Hoff put together an impressive all-around showing at the San Diego Summer ID, leading the event in multiple offensive categories. The physical 6-1, 245-pound C/1B swung a smooth left-handed bat with loud results, producing a 102.6 mph max exit velocity (event-best) while averaging 94.5 mph. His barrel was on display through both BP rounds with an 81.8% hard hit rate and a 72.7% sweet spot rate, consistently driving the ball to the pull-side with authority. Hoff also led the event in Blast Motion bat speed, topping at 84.2 mph with a 76.9 average—highlighting his ability to generate whip with the barrel from a strong, leveraged swing. Behind the dish, he showed one of the top pop times at 1.97-2.10 with a 76 mph catcher velocity and accuracy to the bag, while also touching 79 across the INF at 1B.

Romeo Briones LHP / 1B / Helix, CA / 2028

Briones stood out as a two-way follow with a strong 6-0, 235-pound frame and intriguing metrics on both sides of the ball. On the mound, the left-hander worked 81-81.8 mph with his FB, showing carry through the zone and late glove-side life. He featured a high-spin CB at 71.2-72.8 mph with a tight, short shape, a SL at 73-75.6 mph with subtle sweep, and a deceptive CH at 74.6-76.7 mph with late fade—offering a well-rounded arsenal with effective velo separation. Offensively, Briones delivered loud contact from the left side, peaking with a 101.2 mph max exit velocity (3rd best at the event) and averaging 90.2 mph. His 60% hard hit rate combined with a level swing path produced consistent impact from gap to gap. Also flashed a 79 mph INF velo from 1B capping off a strong showing as a two-way product.

Landon Scott SS / 2B / Temecula Valley, CA / 2027

Scott made the trip from Temecula and flashed intriguing tools and projection from an athletic 6-1, 175-pound frame with more fill likely on its way. He posted a top-10 exit velocity at 96.5 mph and consistently drove the ball with authority to the middle of the field, reaching a max distance of 356 feet. His 60% sweet spot rate and consistent feel for the barrel stood out, aided by a controlled, slightly uphill swing geared for line drives and loft. He clocked in a 7.11 60 yard dash and showed the defensive actions and arm (82 MPH INF velo) to project as a left-side infielder long term. A polished '27 with present strength and athleticism to keep eyes on leading into his junior year.

Easton Ochoa OF / RHP / James Madison, CA / 2027

The physical 6-1, 189-pound, Ochoa, showed off one of the more talented tool sets at the event, blending athleticism, arm strength, and consistent offensive metrics. The 2027 prospect ran the 4th best 60 yard dash at 6.94 and led all outfielders with an 87 mph arm velocity, projecting well to both CF and RF with his strong closing speed and arm strength. At the plate, Ochoa’s swing showed consistent lift with intent to drive the baseball in the air—evidenced by a 27.93° average launch angle and 363’ max batted distance. His 94.8 mph max exit velocity (top 10) and 89.7 mph average placed him among the event leaders, while his Blast Motion metrics were equally strong, highlighted by a 23.1 max hand speed (21.5 avg) and 78.1  max bat speed (72.2 avg). A well-rounded profile on both sides of the ball.
