DFW Summer ID - Session 1: Position Player Analysis

On Tuesday, May 27th the PB Texas staff traveled to Denton Ryan HS in Denton TX, to host the DFW Summer ID - Session 1, an open event for all high school classes.

Around 40 players made their way to Denton Ryan and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Texas staff.

We have already released a Statistical Analysis, highlighting the event’s top performers in the more traditional stat categories, as well as a Takeaways, highlighting some of the event's top performers, while also posting Data Dives for both Pitchers and Position Players.

Today, we take a look at the scouting reports from the position players in attendance as well as rank the top 5 from the event.

TOP POSITION PLAYERS

1. Nathan McKnight C / RHP / RED OAK, TX / 2026

Positional Profile: C/RHP Catcher with good build to add more strength. Moves well. Opportunities for adjustments present with hip approach to increase contact consistency and impact. Solid receiver. Switch hitting catcher with chance power exceeds. RHS…solid deliver and arm action with arm speed present. Around zone with stuff in bullpen setting. FB shows nice velo now, expect will continue to add in future. Shows feel to spin baseball, creating action with both slider and CB. Change is developing. Impressive on mound. Will continue to get better. Starter with 4 pitch mix.
Body: 6-2, 229-pounds. Solid build with good frame/build to add increase strength.
Hit: SH. Open stance, knee lift stride, lands in good position to hit. Rotational back foot, hits with firm front side, body leans back at point of contact. Work to drive back hip forward with rotation of back foot, develop ability to hit with more upright posture at point of contact. These adjustments will result in increased ability to impact baseball. Similar for both sides of plate with approach. LHH…Barrel/hands start in good launch position. Swing works, takes nice path to zone with both hands and barrel. Uphill swing path present due to body leans back at contact point. With body adjustment, will get on plane creating more line drive contact with ability to learn how to lift pitches in future. RHH…barrel starts slightly wrapped creating length to swing, otherwise similar swing dynamics. 68 mph bat speed with 11 G's of rotational acceleration.
Power: 100 max exit velocity, averaged 81.4 mph. 307' max distance. Project solid/bat power combo in future. Opportunities present for adjustments to increase ability to impact baseball and create/promote line drive contact. Applies to both sides of plate.
Arm: RH. C-84 mph. Arm works, shows some arm quickness/arm speed. Tended to pull throws to SS side of bag. Front shoulder opens early causing pull. Misses to arm side are caused by arm being late on occasion with some lead shoulder opening early.
Defense: 1.93-2.01 pop times. Receives well with glove. Solid foot work setting to throw. Nice job of handling pens with hands.
ATH: 7.16 runner in the 60. Decent start, gets upright when running, would like to head/shoulders with lean forward for entire 60. Runs well for big/strong frame. Can increase run time slightly in future.
