Prep Baseball Missouri Staff

As the spring season progresses, the Prep Baseball Missouri staff has updated the state’s 2028 rankings once again. This is one of our most significant updates yet, following an action-packed preseason showcase season. We evaluated over 150 talented freshman, expanding our list from 10 to 30 players, with more than 20 new names added.

It's important to note that with an update of this size, some players may see a decline in their overall rank, despite improving and surpassing some peers, simply due to the addition of so many new names. For a deeper understanding of how we compile our rankings, click HERE.

THE TOP TEN

The top ten remains largely unchanged in this update, with just one newcomer breaking into the mix.

The western side of the state continues to dominate the upper tier of our rankings, led by the Kansas City trio of 1B/LHP Keelan Zumwalt (Summit Christian), INF/RHP Kameron Gillespie (Liberty), and INF/RHP Krue Patrick (Staley) occupying the top three spots. Each has been a key contributor to their high school’s strong spring performance, with all three programs ranked among the state’s best in our latest MSHSAA Team Rankings.

Krue Patrick

OF/LHP Brady Rallo (Christian Brothers College) checks in at No. 4, followed by INF/RHP Nolan Ash (Southern Boone) and INF/RHP Porter McCarthy (Benton), who hold steady at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The lone newcomer to the top ten is OF/RHP Jackson Leonard (Eureka), who debuts at No. 7 in this update. The physically imposing 6-foot-4, 215-pound two-way standout is quickly emerging as a name to know after a standout showing at the A's Scout Day this winter. At the plate, Leonard features a controlled, powerful swing geared to the pull side, highlighted by a peak exit velocity of 103.2 mph. On the mound, he showcased athleticism and feel, working with a lively fastball that touched 89 mph, a sharp swing-and-miss slider, and a well-developed changeup.

NOTABLE NEWCOMERS

With this update, our list expands from ten to thirty names. Below, we highlight a handful of notable newcomers making their rankings debut.

Just missing the top ten, INF/RHP Jon Calcaterra (Lindbergh) makes his debut at No. 11 in this edition of our rankings. Standing tall at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, Calcaterra continues to impress with every look. At the Recruits Scout Day this winter, he showcased a notable increase in velocity, topping out at 86.1 mph while consistently working in the 82-85 mph range. His fastball played well alongside his secondary offerings, which include a curveball at 68-72 mph and a changeup at 73-75 mph, both showing advanced feel. At the plate, Calcaterra also demonstrated middle-of-the-order power potential, with a strong right-handed swing that produced exit velocities in the mid to upper 90s at the Missouri Preseason All-State.

Coming in at spots No. 12 and No. 14 are a pair of Logan-Rogersville standouts, INF Jack Sutherland and OF/RHP Cooper Wagner, both of whom impressed at the Springfield stop of our A’s Scout Day this offseason.

Sutherland is a highly projectable 5-foot-11, 155-pound athlete with a polished skill set well beyond his years. He features a smooth left-handed swing with natural loft to the pull side and clean, reliable actions on the infield, highlighted by an 88 mph arm across the diamond.

Wagner offers intriguing two-way upside in a lean 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame. On the mound, he features his fastball up to 84 mph with over 2,400 RPM, complementing it with a sweeping slider at 73-75 mph and a firm changeup at 79-81 mph. At the plate, Wagner consistently finds the barrel, showing a fluid, through-the-zone swing that produced gap-to-gap line drives.

Jack Sutherland

Another standout from our Recruits Scout Day this February, LHP Cory Hilzinger (Seckman) enters the rankings at No. 15. A high-pitchability southpaw, Hilzinger features a fastball up to 82.9 mph with natural arm-side run and advanced feel for a unique mix of secondary offerings, including a curveball, changeup, and knuckleball. With his command and pitch mix, Hilzinger stands out as one of the top left-handed arms in the class — and there’s likely more in the tank.

INF/OF Memphis Mooneyham (Aurora) slides in at No. 16. A top-of-the-order type bat, Mooneyham plays the game with a high level of polish and maturity, showing refined actions on both sides of the ball. He stood out at the Junior Future Games in Atlanta, playing a key role in helping Team Missouri capture the title while showcasing his all-around skill set and feel for the game.

Perhaps one of the biggest winners of the preseason, RHP/INF Asher Krimmel (Lafayette) jumps into the rankings at No. 17 following a loud all-around performance at the Rawlings Tigers Scout Day. Lean and long-levered at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Krimmel offers significant upside and the makings of a promising two-way profile. He showcases advanced bat speed and lightning-quick hands that produce exit velocities in the upper 90s, while his arm strength on the infield seamlessly translates to the mound, where he works his fastball in the 82-83 mph range with a slider/changeup mix to pair.

INF Jack Bogard (Francis Howell) and OF Carson Bass (Rock Bridge) are two more names to know after strong showings at our events this winter, landing at No. 18 and No. 20, respectively. Sandwiched between them at No. 19 is RHP/INF Cade Cantrell (Knob Noster), an intriguing arm to follow who ran his fastball up to 84 mph last summer at our Heart of America Summer ID.
