2025 Douglas Eagles Team Preview

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.
Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

TEAM OUTLOOK
The Douglas Eagles made significant progress last season, finishing with a 17-12 record and earning a spot in the Class 5A playoffs. With hopes of building on that success, the Eagles are bringing back a strong group of returners, particularly on offense, who will be key to advancing further into the playoffs in 2025.
The Eagles finished as runners-up in their area last season, but their playoff run came to a halt in the first round. They faced a tough challenge on the road against Alexandria, a team with one of the state's most formidable playoff atmospheres. Alexandria swept the Eagles in two games and eventually went on to win the Class 5A State Championship. Despite the early exit, the Eagles' 17-12 finish left room for optimism, as several underclassmen played pivotal roles and gained valuable experience. With those players now ready to take on larger roles, the team is hopeful for an even more successful season. A few key returners will spearhead the Eagles' efforts this spring, including two-way prospects RHP/OF Cason Walls (2025) and RHP/3B Bentley Smith (2028). Walls will lead the pitching rotation and is also a key offensive contributor, while Smith is expected to be one of their top hitters, having delivered several clutch hits last season. Smith will also be a valuable asset on the mound. C/OF Brock Walls (2025), another returning senior, will take over the catching duties and is poised to be a middle-of-the-order offensive threat. Freshman SS Baker Lyles (2028) returns after a solid debut season, offering strong defense at shortstop and should hit near the top of the order. Other upperclassmen, including 1B/LHP Kash Moultrie (2025), OF/C Canaan Murray (2025), and INF Kevin Spears (2025), will play key roles and provide veteran leadership to the younger players.
Looking to build on their late-season momentum from last year, the Eagles once again have the talent to be a playoff contender in 2025. They'll compete in Class 5A, Area 13 against Boaz, Crossville, and Sardis for a playoff spot at the end of the regular season. With a talented roster and high expectations, the Eagles are definitely a team to watch in Class 5A this spring.
