2027 SS BRET BALDWIN (WASHINGTON COMMIT)

Bret Baldwin SS / RHP / Ralston Valley, CO / 2027

Baldwin is a 2025 Future Games alumni with a strong toolset to take to the next level. The shortstop comes with twitch and athleticism out of a frame that should only continue to develop and get stronger. Baldwin runs a 6.9 60-yard dash with an 85 mph infield throwing velocity, and a top exit velocity at 96 mph. The junior had a strong year in 2025, and is now taking his talents to Washington following his senior spring season.

OUR Q&A:

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Bret: Honestly, I didn’t have many expectations other than wanting to find a place where I felt truly wanted and where I could continue to develop as both a player and a person. I was looking for a college program with coaches who believe in me, hold their players to a high standard, and push them to get better every day. Academics, culture, and the relationships within the program were all really important to me. I wanted a competitive environment where I could be challenged, earn everything I get, and be part of a team that feels like a family while competing at a high level.

Prep Baseball: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Bret: What I like most about the program I chose is how well everything comes together at the University of Washington. The academics were a huge factor for me because UW offers a top-tier education and sets a high standard for its student-athletes. Knowing I’ll be pushed in the classroom while also being developed on the field was really important in my decision. The facilities are outstanding and provide everything needed to train, recover, and compete at a high level. On top of that, the coaching staff made it clear they truly care about their players and have a clear plan for development. The combination of strong academics, great facilities, and coaches I trust is what ultimately made Washington the right fit for me.

Prep Baseball: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Bret: My biggest advice would be to stay patient and trust the process. Things don’t always go the way you expect, and it can be easy to get frustrated or compare yourself to others. The most important thing is to focus on getting better every day, whether it’s in your skills, your work ethic, or your mindset. Also, build strong relationships with your coaches and teammates, because the support and guidance you get from them can make a huge difference. Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the game, passion and love for baseball will carry you through the tough moments and make the hard work worth it.

Prep Baseball: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Bret: Location and distance from home didn’t really play a factor in my decision. What mattered most to me was finding a place where I felt comfortable and supported, and the University of Washington instantly felt like a new home. From the coaches to the players and the overall environment, it’s a place where I know I can grow, compete, and thrive both on and off the field.

Prep Baseball: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Bret: The recruiting process really started to heat up during my junior fall. Washington first saw me play at a Salt River Fields tournament where my club organization brings together teams from all over the country. I had a very strong weekend there, which helped put me on their radar. A few weeks later, Coach Kryzsko came out to California to watch me play again. The first game didn’t go exactly how I wanted, but I was able to bounce back the second game and respond the right way. When we talked afterward, what stood out most to him was the character I showed that weekend and the fact that I continued to play hard and give full effort no matter the circumstances.

Prep Baseball: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Bret: We’re a much older squad now, and with so many of us having a full season of varsity experience, we’re ready to have a really big year. Everyone is more comfortable at the varsity level, and that experience has raised our expectations. We’re excited for the opportunity ahead and ready to compete from day one.
