Kansas Class of 2028 Rankings Update: Post-Summer Edition

The 2026 summer circuit has wrapped up, and the Prep Baseball Kansas staff has made a post-summer update to the Sunflower State’s 2028 rankings as this class heads into its junior year. With the August 1 recruiting window now open for the class, this refreshed list takes stock of the summer’s performances, including takeaways from the Future Games, and highlights 200 players with several notable newcomers and plenty of movement across the board.

RISERS
A look at eight notable risers inside the top 100...

Asher Newton INF / Manhattan, KS / 2028A toolsy all-around athlete, Newton put together a big spring and summer campaign that culminated at the Future Games in Georgia where he put together arguably the top defensive week ever by a Kansas infielder. The Manhattan product and recent Kansas State commit slides up seven spots to No. 3 and jumps into the national rankings as well.

Parker Bass RHP / Olathe West, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 5 / POS: 2
The upside is immense with the 6-foot-7, 230-pound Bass, who breaks into our top ten after moving up nine spots to No. 5. The righty impressed at this summer's Future Games despite battling the elements, running a high-octane fastball up to 91 mph with feel to land a high-spin slider that has the makings of a swing and miss offering. There's still plenty more in the tank for the Olathe West product, who looks primed for a breakout spring.

Everett Hash OF / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 6 / POS: 2
One of the region's biggest winners of the summer circuit, Hash broke out in a big way this summer, hitting .420 while adding nine home runs and nearly 40 RBIs to go along with impressive tools across the board. Hash put an exclamation mark on his breakout summer, going .500 against the nation's best arms at the Future Games, earning him a seven-spot bump in our rankings to No. 6.

Hunter Horner OF / INF / Blue Valley West, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 4
After capping off a strong summer with a statement week at the Future Games that saw him hit well above .500 on the week and rack up five stolen bases to push him to a perfect 31-for-31 on the summer, Horner rises eleven spots in this update to position himself in the top 10 at No. 8. A coach's kid who plays the game the right way, Horner is only going to continue to see his stock rise as he continues to add size and strength.

Brody VanHouten RHP / 1B / Spring Hill, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 23 / POS: 7
VanHouten sees one of the biggest jumps of the update, moving up over 35 spots from No. 60 to No. 23. Standing at a physical 6-foot-4, 225-pounds, the Spring Hill product stood out at the Heart of America Summer ID where he featured a fastball up to 87 mph, earning an invite to the Future Games where he tossed a pair of shutout frames for Team Kansas. An efficient mover who has plenty more in the tank, look for VanHouten to be an impact arm for the Broncos next spring.

Nils Salmonson 3B / SS / Olathe South, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 25 / POS: 1
Salmonson makes a 27-spot jump up from No. 52 to No. 25 in this update after our first look this summer at our Prime and Precision Scout Day. The Olathe South infielder showed notable athleticism with tools to pair, posting a 98.3 mph exit velocity, a 6.85 60-yard dash, and an 82 mph INF arm that make him an upside name to keep an eye on in the coming years.

Caleb Swan SS / RHP / Olathe West, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 47 / POS: 13
Swan showed a massive jump across the board this summer at our Kansas City Top Prospect Games, showcasing not only a refined game, but also added size and strength. Lean and athletic at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Swan registered a 95 mph exit velocity from a level right-handed swing and showed reliable actions and an 85 mph arm on the infield with plenty of upside as he continues to develop. He rises 29 spots in this update.

Noah Stanley C / SS / Andale, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 69 / POS: 8
Stanley continues to get better with each look our staff gets. The switch-hitting backstop impressed in several looks this spring and summer, including the Team KC Scout Day where he emerged as one of the day's winners with a 1.93-2.08 pop time from the chute to go along with a 6.97 60 and a 93 mph exit velocity. A three-sport athlete, Stanley is an intriguing name to follow.

Gabe Brown RHP / St. Mary's Colgan, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 6
The top newcomer in our rankings, Brown enters at No. 16 in this update as one of the top names to know on the mound in the state. A major piece of St. Mary's Colgan's back-to-back state titles, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound righty brings a composed look to the mound, running his fastball up to 89 mph paired with two high-spin breaking balls and more to come from a repeatable delivery and loose arm action.

Maddox Pyle RHP / De Soto, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 28 / POS: 9
Pyle joins our 2028 rankings after an impressive showing at our Prime and Precision Scout Day and several in-game looks throughout the summer, sliding in at No. 28. The De Soto right-hander has been up to 87 mph with the fastball, impressing with feel for a three-pitch mix while making quick work of hitters at this summer's Future Games. With room to add on to a 6-foot-1 frame, don't be surprised to see Pyle move further up the rankings in the near future.

Chase Pelfrey OF / RHP / Kapaun Mt. Carmel, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 34 / POS: 5
With baseball bloodlines and a 6-foot-3, 161-pound frame, it's hard to ignore the upside with Pelfrey, who makes his debut in our rankings at No. 34 after a standout showing at our Wichita Summer ID. Pelfrey shined on both sides of the ball, registering triple-digit exit velocities and a 6.95 60 to go along with a four-pitch mix on the mound that featured a fastball up to 86 mph. The Kapaun product will be one to keep an eye on as he polishes his game.

Cruz Kaiser OF / Andale, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 36 / POS: 6
Another major winner from our Wichita Summer ID, Kaiser makes his debut in our rankings at No. 36. The Andale outfielder turned heads with one of the loudest performances of the summer, showing off his athleticism with a 6.68 60 while showing pop and bat speed from the left side of the plate with triple-digit exit velocities. A high-follow prospect with an intriguing blend of speed and power.

Jared Flax OF / RHP / Garden Plain, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 37 / POS: 7
The 6-foot-4 two-way athlete showed a sky-high ceiling at the Wichita Summer ID. The right-handed hitter has levers and athleticism at the plate, posting a 97 mph exit velocity while working his fastball into the low 80s, and will be a follow as he continues to add strength. Flax enters at No. 37 in this update.

Paxton Bonham INF / RHP / Augusta, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 44 / POS: 3
Landing at No. 44 in this update, Bonham enters the rankings after a strong two-way showing during our trip to Wichita earlier this June. A strong athlete with some present pop in a right-handed swing, it was on the mound where Bonham really stood out, running his fastball into the mid-80s and spinning a 3,000+ RPM curveball that featured an average of -17" of sweep.

Jeremiah Roberson OF / Olathe East, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 48 / POS: 8
A name we have known, Roberson jumps into the rankings at No. 48 thanks to the added strength and polish he showed off at our MOKAN Summer ID and Cavs Club Scout Day Games this summer. Arguably one of the most physically imposing bats in the class at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, the multi-sport athlete shows plenty of power potential as he continues to fine-tune his game.

David Ferreira INF / RHP / Gardner-Edgerton, KS / 2028Rankings StateRank: 49 / POS: 14
A standout on the mound at our MOKAN Summer ID, Ferreira showed a lively arm and a fastball up to 85 mph, entering our rankings at No. 49. The Gardner-Edgerton righty works with good tempo and deception on the mound while showing the ability to handle the bat as well across several in-game looks this summer. He will be a name to keep an eye on as he adds size and strength.
