Last Chance Summer ID: Quick Hits

On Sunday, August 23rd, our staff traveled to Triton College in River Grove, Illinois to host the Last Chance Summer ID.

The event was host to over 30 players from Illinois and gave our staff a good look at some of the talent the area has to offer. We already posted a Statistical Analysis story, highlighting some of the top performances metrically, found here.

Today we are taking a look at some of the day’s biggest winners with this Quick Hits piece, found below.

QUICK HITS

1B Danny Houston (Lincoln-Way Central, 2027)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 221-pound, physical, well-proportioned frame with strength present throughout. Houston showcased a strong, compact swing with present bat-speed and easy jump off the barrel to all fields. The right-hander produced the loudest round of BP on the day, posting a 101 mph max EV, 92 mph avg EV, and a 378-foot max distance that left the yard with ease. The right-hander also showed competent actions at first base with a solid arm across the infield at 83 mph. Houston remains an uncommitted power bat to know who should play a significant role in the heart of the Knights’ lineup in the spring.

RHP Hayden Wendt (Huntley, 2027)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 189-pound, strong lower-half, well-proportioned frame. Wendt operates out of the stretch only, coiling into the back hip, working strong down the mound through the catcher. The arm plays loose with late whip, full-circle action working from a high ¾ slot. The fastball played with tons of life through the zone at 87 mph, with 20.2 IVB and good command. Showing a four-pitch mix, the curveball was a 12-6 profile, working the bottom half of the zone sitting mid-70s, while the slider was upper-70s, able to create separation with a short, tight movement profile. Then the changeup was 73-75 mph, working well off the fastball with downer action. Wendt put himself out there as an uncommitted name to know in the senior class.

OF Colin Albano (Wauconda, 2027)
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 162-pound, trim, high-waisted build. Albano presents a balanced setup with a loose, handsy swing that creates length through the zone to the middle/pull-side. He started the showcase by displaying notable athleticism, running a 6.79-second 60-yard dash with a 20.5 mph max run speed, the second-best time and best run speed of the event. His agility was also on display in the outfield during the defensive portion of the event, flashing easy range to both sides of the field with an 81 mph outfield velocity. The left-hander also produced a strong round of BP, flashing a feel for the barrel with a 96.8 mph max EV and a 351-foot max distance on a pull-side shot. A left-handed outfielder to know from the event.

INF Luca Bruni (Barrington, 2028)
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 145-pound, wiry build with additional room to add strength. Bruni operated out of a wider setup with a simple lift-and-place stride, showcasing bat-to-ball skills and the ability to control the barrel while spraying the field with hard line-drive contact. The right-hander put together one of the more consistent BP rounds of the day, producing a 91 mph max EV and 89 mph avg EV. Bruni is a name to follow from the event that should continue to trend upward with added strength.

INF Caden Medler (Morris, 2027)
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 173-pound, athletic, well-proportioned frame. Medler showed quality hitting and defensive tools in the event, emerging as an uncommitted name to know. At the plate, the right-hander displayed an intentful swing with loud line-drive contact to all fields, and a level path. He had a strong round of BP, finding multiple loud barrels for a 93.3 mph max EV with an 86.9 mph avg EV. In the outfield, the right-hander attacked the baseball and moved well laterally with a quick arm action and an 80 mph outfield velocity. Impressive overall showing from the uncommitted senior outfielder.

INF Evan Franciscy (West Aurora, 2027)
Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 165-pound, compact, high-waisted build with some strength present in the lower half. Franciscy worked out of a balanced setup with present bat-to-ball skills and twitchy, hard line-drive contact to the middle/pull-side. The right-hander had one of the most polished BP rounds of the event, showcasing a strong feel for the barrel with a handful 91+ mph EVs. He went on to finish with a 92 mph max EV, an 89.4 mph avg EV, and a 345-foot max distance. Franciscy presents a ton to like at the plate and is a still-uncommitted name to follow from the event.

INF RJ Halverson (Marmion Academy, 2027)
Uncommitted. 5-foot-8, 159-pound, compact, durable frame with some strength throughout. Halverson worked out of a crouched, slightly open setup with a loose swing that creates whip in the barrel, producing loud contact and a feel to backspin the ball at times. The right-hander has made notable jumps with the bat since our staff last saw him in the winter, increasing his max EV to 96 mph with an average EV of 89.5 mph. Strong overall showing from the uncommitted middle infielder.

1B Brody Connelly (Carmel Catholic, 2028)
Uncommitted. 6-foot, 187-pound, lean, athletic build. Connelly emerged as a left-handed bat to know in his showcase debut, showing a strong, level path with a barrel that creates length through the zone to produce loud contact to all fields. Connelly was all over the barrel in his round of BP, finishing with a 95 mph max EV, a 91 mph avg EV, and a 364-foot max distance. His round earned him the second highest average exit velocity of the event along with a second furthest max distance. An impressive performance from the intriguing left-handed hitter, who established himself as one of the more notable uncommitted bats from the event.

RHP/INF Jenner Smith (Hersey, 2028)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 176-pounds, wiry, long-limbed frame, more to come. Works stretch only, quick leg tuck, tall/fall down the mound, with quality extension. The arm works loose and quick, full-circle AA, ¾ slot. The fastball T86 mph, sitting 83-85, and was working the bottom-half of the zone, firm flashing riding traits. The curveball has a late hook, 11-6 profile, developing command, 67-69 mph. While the slider sat 72-74, gyro shape with depth at times. Changeup worked similar to the fastball, slight downer action, sitting 75-76 mph. He also showed some promise with the bat during his round of BP, collecting a 94.4 mph max EV, with a 89.8 mph avg EV, and a 343-foot max distance. As the secondaries continue to develop, Smith is an intriguing ’28 to keep an eye on.

1B Owen Rumshas (Yorkville, 2028)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 178-pound, athletic, long-levered build. Rumshas presented an intentful, uphill path that created jump off the barrel with loud contact to the middle/pull-side. The right-hander showcased a ton of hard line-drive contact in his round of BP, finishing with a 93.9 mph max EV, with an 89.2 mph avg EV, and a 349-foot max distance. Rumshas is an intriguing uncommitted bat to follow, with his developing frame and ability to produce consistent hard contact giving him plenty of upside.

OF Nate Willman (Evanston Township, 2027)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 185-pound, trim, high-waisted build with present athleticism. Willman was another intriguing left-handed bat that jumped onto the scene in his event debut, showcasing a wider base with a slightly uphill path and some feel for the barrel. He started the event with a strong 60-yard dash at 6.99 seconds and a 19.1 mph max run speed. His agility carried over into the defensive portion of the event where he showed easy range to both sides in the outfield with a strong arm at 84 mph. During his round of BP, the left-hander put up a 90.5 mph max EV, with an 82.5 avg EV, and a 353-foot max distance. Overall, the left-hander possesses a ton of intriguing tools that make him an uncommitted name to follow moving forward.

RHP Emmitt Teuber (Lake Zurich, 2029)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 175-pounds, long-limbed, frame with more to come. Teuber put together one of the more intriguing bullpens of the day. The right-hander worked quick down the mound, with a controlled, rhythmic process, high leg lift to the chest, tall/fall down the mound. The arm action is clean full-circle, that shortens up on release from a ¾ slot. The fastball sits 76-77 mph; with more to come in the future, it plays with natural cut, stays firm through the zone, effective for the slot. He flashed two secondaries, with the curveball sitting 63-64 mph; 11-5 profile playing with horizontal movement at times, while the changeup was 71-73 mph; with heavy arm-side fade. There is a lot to like as the profile continues to develop.

RHP Colten Dahm (Oswego East, 2029)
Uncommitted. 6-foot, 166-pounds, athletic frame. An easy mover on the mound, short, controlled actions, drifts down the mound, with late explosion on foot strike. The arm works a clean half-circle AA from the ¾ slot. The fastball shows a sinker profile, easy out of the hand, landing bottom-half with life, sitting 82-83 mph. The curveball has a true sweeper profile, able to gain -16.8 inches of late horizontal break, a true swing-and-miss pitch as velo continues to add on, sitting 69-70 mph. While the changeup worked well at 78-79 mph with arm-side fade off the fastball.
