Emerson, Ga. -

One of the more anticipated games of the day was taking place at the Lakepoint Sports Complex in the midst of some massive summer heat. From the looks of it, there was not much room to walk around since it was filled with scouts, waiting to see the two hard throwing right handers start off the game.

Even though Team NorCal lost the game, there were a generous amount of swings and misses throughout the whole game. Davis Wilson got the nod for Team NorCal and took full advantage of the two innings he threw.

Wilson didn’t waste any time getting ahead of the South Texas lineup, he would get ahead with the fastball, which was sitting steady between 92-93 mph. Wilson gets downhill on his fastball, he also possesses a nasty cutter that would sit between 84-86 mph, nobody touched it. Wilson also throws a cutter, which is just a bit slower than his slider (86-88 mph) They both play extremely well off the fastball. His changeup has a split-like action, in which he can command efficiently. Wilson pitched with confidence, composure, and swag. His ability to throw any pitch in any count proves why he is one of the top arms in the ‘27 class. Wilson finished the day with two strikeouts in the first and one in the second, only surrendering a single to right field.

The next arm up for NorCal was southpaw Mariano Gonzalez, his outing wasn’t his best by any means, but still managed to showcase some very intriguing and electric stuff. Gonzalez lit up the radar gun with his fastball in the third inning of the game, he managed to hit 94.5 mph, and sat between 91-93 early in the game, through some fatigue, he dropped down to 89-91 in his second inning. Gonzalez threw a breaking ball that had some serious bite and gave some of the South Texas hitters troubles. Gonzalez had a whippy arm action and was very athletic on the mound.

Closing out the Norcal arms was Wyatt McElree out of Redwood High School, McElree had all his pitches working. The fastball sat between 89-91 T92, McElree pitched in all quadrants of the plate, mixing in his secondaries all throughout the outing. The most impressive part of his outing was watching him pitch with conviction, attacking whoever was in the box. His changeup was disgusting, he sat between 79-81 mph with some great fade. McElree had the slider rolling between 78-79 mph (2700+), tunneled well off the fastball.

Offensively, The NorCal team didn’t have that many hits, but they still managed to make some loud outs and a couple extra base hits. William Walbridge had some of the best swings with a double that was smoked over the center fielders head, his next at bat he followed up with a 99.2 mph EV to third base for a lineout. Colton Hadfield opened the game up on defense with a web gem up the middle, which saved Wilson from a hit. Colton Hadfield barreled a ball off of the South Texas right handed throwing flame thrower, which was sitting between 94-95 mph. Gio Castiang held it down with Logan Mull behind the plate, the two really set the tone and controlled all of the pitching. Castaing went 1-2 with a single to right field, along with a home run that was hit foul by just a couple feet. Stevie Wellens hit a double to right center field later in the game, Wellens had a really good infield and BP workout. Merrick Lee got on base twice with a walk that led off the game and a single up the middle for a knock.

Team NorCal will take on North Texas at 4:00 PM tomorrow, followed by a game against SoCal the following day.
