Cuthbertson Dominates West Stanly in 10-0 Season Opener

Cuthbertson High School – February 25, 2025

Cuthbertson, coming off a stellar 2024 season, made a strong start to their 2025 campaign with a dominant 10-0 victory over West Stanly. The Cavaliers struck early, scoring in their first two at-bats before sealing the game with a six-run fifth inning. Two Cuthbertson pitchers combined for nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits in the shutout win.

Game Recap

Michael Clemente (2025, RHP, Wofford commit) led the way on the mound, working 4.1 innings and surrendering only two hits and three walks while striking out six. Caden Matthews (2025, LHP) came on in relief in the fifth with two runners on in a tight 3-0 game. Matthews closed out the game by tossing 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Cuthbertson’s offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the 10-run rule, capping off a decisive victory.

Offensively, Ryan Watters (2027, OF) led the charge with three hits and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. Matthews contributed from the DH role, also collecting three hits, including a double, while scoring twice and knocking in three runs. Cuthbertson totaled 13 hits, breaking the game open as they attacked the West Stanly bullpen.

West Stanly’s Sam Carpenter (2026 INF/RHP) started on the mound, working four innings while giving up three earned runs. Carpenter showcased his strong arm with seven strikeouts but struggled with control, walking five. Offensively, he led the Colts with two of their four hits, including a double.

Cuthbertson will travel to South Meck on Friday, while West Stanly looks to even their record when they host South Stanly.
