Nashville Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Hunter Martin
Tennessee Scouting Director

GALLATIN, TN — The Nashville Preseason ID was held at the Liberty Creek HS Indoor Facility on Sunday, January 11th that featured some of the top talent in the 2026-2023 classes. Players went through a pro-style workout with TrackMan, Blast Motion, and VALD Performance tech, while pitchers threw in a bulllpen setting and were able to get data and metrics on our TrackMan unit.

Some prospects built on past showings, while others made strong first impressions.

We continue our post-event coverage with a look some of the top performers from the event, with more breakdowns and full scouting reports coming soon.

QUICK HITS 📝

+ Wyatt Jones (Christian Academy of Knoxville, 2028) Wyatt Jones shows great power-speed potential for the 2029 class. The Warriors outfielder came into the day unranked, but left with one of the most notable performances of the Nashville Preseason ID. Jones stands at 5’11, 162 lbs. with a lean frame, quick hands, and good control of the lower-half. Wyatt made solid line-drive contact to all fields and topped out at 96.4 MPH. He shows good bat control and stays on top of the ball, which should allow him to be a good situational hitter. Pairing this with his speed (6.76-second 60-yard dash time), Wyatt should be an extra-base hit machine this spring.

+ Jaxon Whaley (Lipscomb Academy, 2028) - Jaxon Whaley is as explosive a player as they come. In all facets of his game, he shows intensity and power, which helps him yield consistently strong results. He has a projectable frame and room for added muscle, standing at 6’1, 196 lbs. The two-sport athlete from Lipscomb Academy transferred his route-running experience as a wide receiver into a 6.85-second 60 dash time. At the plate, Jaxon has a mid-low handset and a slightly wide base, which allows him to hone his natural strength in his swing. He showcased this by hitting a ball at 96.4 MPH and sending it over 350 ft. Finally, he topped off his day by showing off his solid arm strength and topping out at 84 MPH OF velocity. A strong showing from Jaxon at the Nashville Preseason ID shows that he hasn’t lost a step after switching his focus back to baseball for the spring.

+ Landon Wiseman (Battle Creek, 2029) - Landon Wiseman provides impressive power for his size. He has a compact frame with great muscle development for his age. The 5’8” Battle Creek Third Baseman hit a max exit velocity of 97 MPH at the Nashville Preseason ID. Wiseman alternates between a toe tap and a short stride. He's able to get under the ball and lift it well by twisting his hips and unleashing raw power on the ball. Landon also shows promise at the hot corner. He showed off the arm strength, topping out at 86 MPH INF Velocity. Wiseman came into this event unranked in the 2029 class. Landon left with one of the better performances of the Preseason ID. Looking forward to seeing how Wiseman develops going into the spring.

Elias Chunn (Battle Creek, 2029) - Getting our first look at Chunn, we left impressed with his overall physicality where he comes in as a big, physical middle infielder who stood out as one of the best position players at the event. This was our first chance to see Chunn, and he definitely left a big impression. Standing at 6’0 191 lbs, Chunn has a rare combination of size and speed as a freshman. As a hitter, Chunn has quick twitch and creates good lift that should lead to power. Even at his strong stature, Chunn ran a 7.2 60 which should be a sub 7 as he goes through high school. He will be one to keep an eye on this spring as he should find his way on the field sooner rather than later.

+ Phillip Pence (Lebanon, 2027) - We saw Pence back in October where he had an extremely loud round of BP belting balls over the fence to pull side consistently. An intriguing prospect as a big, physical catcher in the sophomore class. Standing at 5’11 184 lbs, Pence has a good frame to stick as a catcher. He follows that up with upper 1.9 pop time and 74 mph arm. At the plate, Pence is a power bat that works from a wide base and creates good lift that leads to extra base hits. Pence will be a sought after bat in the 2028 class and should push to be in the middle of the lineup on a strong Green Hill team.

+ Cole Henderlight (Goodpasture Christian, 2030) - We first saw Cole this past summer at our Chattanooga Rising Stars event and were thoroughly impressed with the rising 8th grader at the time. About emerging as a prospect we have seen in the developing 2030 class, Henderlights combines advanced physicality where he comes in at 6 foot 3 and 205 pounds with raw tools defensively and in the box. Showing controlled aggression during his BP rounds, he shows fluid mechanics in the swing with advanced metrics for the age where he would finish with an average exit velocity right at 91 mph, while maxing out at 96 mph. The balls jumped off the bat to middle and pull-side gaps with authority rarely seen for prospects of his age. Defensively, he projects for long-term stability at 3rd base where he shows a reliable glove with instincts to match. Arm strength is present in the mid-80s and will continue to climb with maturity. Looks to be a lock for playing time on his high school varsity team as an 8th grader. Name to know.

+ Cooper Burgett (Mt. Juliet, 2029) - This is our first look at Burgett and we came away really impressed with his game and future potential that we believe he is capable of. The freshman already shows signs of maturity at the plate where he comes with feel for barrel control with present juice. He would finish out his BP round with a max EV of 96 on a 313 ft shot for his furthest batted ball. Shows a lot of present athleticism where he clocked his 60 yard spring at a 7.1, with an impressive 30 yard split of 3.89 seconds. Defensively, he looks capable of staying up the middle during his high school career and will be one that we continue to monitor as he gets going into his high school career.

+ Davez Hiland (Beech, 2029) - Hiland was a kid that we had identified this summer after we had heard his name rumbling around and were really trying to get him to an event but suffered an injury that knocked him out for the summer. He looked every bit of the part on Sunday during the Nashville Preseason ID where he shows long-term promise behind the dish, while also showing present athletic components that should bode well for his future potential. He routinely looked crisp on his receiving skills with smooth transitions from glove to hand with present arm strength in the mid 70’s. Just a freshman, Hiland shows advanced ability for the age where he popped multiple pop-times sub 2.00.
