Area Code Underclass Games: Friday Notebook

By Nathan Rode

LONG BEACH, CA—With four more games Friday, the Area Code Underclass Games concluded at Long Beach State’s Blair Field. It’s been a long couple of weeks on the road for me, so let’s dive straight into highlights…

+ SS Cam McMillan (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, KS) is a specimen standing at an impressive 6-foot-5, 200 pounds. His game is raw, but it’s easy to dream on his potential when you see the tools on display. He has good bat speed at the plate, though his batting practice was inconsistent as he was out on his front foot. Defensively, he has solid actions and excellent arm strength. During infield/outfield drills, he was seemingly throwing through the first baseman. Playing shortstop Friday, he showed his rawness on a series of plays. Early in the game, he rushed a little and made a wild throw, but then looked smooth and easy on a double play turn. Later, he ranged to his right, made a backhand pick in the hole and showed plus arm strength to get the out at first. Soon after, on a similar play, he overthrew the first baseman.
