Smith is one of Colorado's top ranked two-way players and comes with no shortage of athleticism and twitch. The 6'4'', 194 Ibs right-hander and outfielder already a fastball in the low 90s and runs a 6.62 60-yard dash time. OUR Q&A:
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Colten: I was looking for a good academic school where I would also be able to compete at the highest level. I wanted to find a place where I would feel at home and able to progress to the next level.
Prep Baseball: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Colten: BYU provides me with a great opportunity to compete right away as a freshman. The coaching staff really put a lot of time into getting to know me, and they seem to treat their players like family. Their focus on development, specifically for their pitchers, is evident with their recent new additions to their staff.
Prep Baseball: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
Colten: Trust the process. Listen to your coaches and your mentors - you can’t do this by yourself. Take care of your body - it’s your biggest asset. And of course, work hard.
Prep Baseball: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
Colten: It definitely helped that BYU is decently close to home. Options are limited in Colorado and it’s nice to know that I’ll be a quick flight from home.
Prep Baseball: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
Colten: I was hearing from my high school and club coaches that I was getting some interest during my sophomore year. BYU first saw me pitch at the WWBA tournament last summer.
Prep Baseball: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?
Colten: Doing Prep Baseball showcases are important to build your profile. It’s helpful for coaches to be able to find out information on you and your metrics.
Prep Baseball: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
Colten: There were several schools that I was actively talking to over the fall, including Notre Dame, Washington State, and Missouri along with several others.
Prep Baseball: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
Colten: Cooper Vais. His slider of doom and despair is not something that you want to have to face as a hitter.
Prep Baseball: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
Colten: I had a good freshman summer, and then going into my sophomore year I started to really gain velocity. That is when I started to really think about playing at the next level.
Prep Baseball: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Colten: I had the opportunity to pitch against the Wow Factor National team during the WWBA last summer under the lights. It was a great time!
Prep Baseball: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
Colten: I think Legend is going to have a great season. We have a solid pitching rotation and a lot of experience at the plate. I’m excited to see what we will do!
