Top 20 Profiles of 2020: No. 11 Justin Larrea

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

We wrap up Week 2 of our countdown of the 20 most viewed profile of 2020 with No. 11 Justin Larrea (Rabun Gap Nacoochee, 2021). Larrea is a native of New York, where he spent the summer attending a number of PBR NY/PA events.

An uncommitted senior, he is a good athlete with sub 7.00 speed. A left-handed hitter, he has quick barrel speed, creating hard pull-side. He might be best suited on the mound though. A southpaw, Larrea works his fastball 84-86, but what really makes him standout is his curveball. The curveball is a swing and miss pitch. It takes a 12/6 shape with sharp break.

Keep reading to view full reports and video on the uncommitted senior.

Defensively: Plays actively with short, controlled steps in the field with ability to drop step and go to either side. Shows a slight knee bend with an upright torso holding the bat above the back shoulder using little pre-pitch bat movement. On pitch, his trigger is a quick toe tap to stride forward while his hands move back into the hitting position. Utilizes good lower body rotation getting his whole-body frame involved in the process of the swing. Shows quick hands into the hitting zone with a level barrel path throughout into a mid-body one-handed finish. Demonstrated line drive ability all fields during batting practice round. Fluid, projectable swing with added strength and development. Recorded an exit velocity of 72 MPH. Defensively- Good approach to the baseball. Gets underneath well with good crow hop mechanics gaining ground throughout the process of the throw. Quick catch and release with accurate throws. Will get better with added strength development. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 75 MPH. Pitching- Sets up in the middle of the rubber with a simple side step into a high leg raise above the hip crease. Breaks down well with good separation into a high ¾ release point. Could engage lower half into the delivery with a better follow though to get in a good fielding position. Will come with more strength and development. Fastball range was 72-74 MPH and peaked at 74 MPH showing arm side run. Curveball was 59-61 MPH with good 12/6 action.
