Indiana Draft Preview

By Phil Wade
Executive Director, PBR Indiana

The 2016 Major League Draft takes place June 9-11. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.

Indiana was a popular scouting destination in 2015 and produced two first-round high school picks for the first time since 1996. While that isn’t likely to happen again in 2016, the latest class warrants plenty of attention on its own. Three players—LHP Zack Thompson (Wapahani HS, IN), RHP Skylar Szynski (Penn HS, IN) and C T.J. Collett (Terre Haute North Vigo HS, IN)—landed in the PBR Draft 100 while several others had their share of scouts following them throughout the spring. If three get popped in the top 10 rounds, it’ll be the first time the state has had at least three high schoolers picked in that range in back-to-back years since 1995-1996.

PBR Draft 100 Prospects

25. Zack Thompson, LHP, Wapahani HS, IN
After dealing with a shoulder injury much of last summer and fall, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Thompson has come back strong this spring. He’s consistently shown a fastball in the 89-93 mph range, touching 94-95. One of the biggest questions heading into the spring, other than his health, was his ability to throw the breaking ball. He has shown on many occasions that he can spin it for a strike, showing sharp break and coming in hard to right-handed hitters. The changeup also improved over his last couple outings, sitting 82-85 with sink and fade. Thompson pitches with easy effort and a quick, clean arm action. He is committed to Kentucky.
