Q&A with Kansas Commit Grey Sanders

Eliott Wilk
Central Region Operations Director

RHP Grey Sanders (Mulvane) is a well-established, flame-throwing right-hander from the Wichita area and is currently ranked No. 14 in Kansas’ loaded senior class. Sanders features a lively low-90s fastball that he’s run up to 95 mph and was a key piece of a Mulvane pitching staff that broke a 71-year-old state record for most strikeouts in a season. He saved some of his most dominant work for the biggest stage this summer, tossing two electric innings at the Senior Future Games, striking out three while sitting 93–95 mph throughout. Shortly after, Sanders committed to the University of Kansas.

We recently had the chance to talk to Sanders about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Grey: While in my recruiting process, I expected to have to be patient and trust that opportunities will only get better. I was looking for a place that I would have an opportunity to be on the field fast.

PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

G: I really like all of the coaching staff. The thing that sealed the deal for me was the way the team is built by their faith.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

G: If you believe you will get better, so will your opportunities.

PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

G: Distance played a big factor in my choice.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

G: The recruiting process picked up fast for me after the Senior Future Games. Kansas had seen me throughout the year, but pulled the trigger after that outing.

PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?

G: The Future Games brought me nearly all of my recruitment. It’s a great opportunity that I am happy I did not pass up.

PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

G: K-State, Louisville, Nebraska, and Oklahoma State.

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

G: Hays Ensley, Brody Clasen, Grady Myers, and Hudson Myers.

PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

G: I made a big jump on the mound after my 7th grade season. When I saw the numbers on the radar in my first bullpen of that offseason, I realized I had the opportunity to be good.

PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

G: We have a very high caliber team. Full of young and old talent. We are hoping to make a run at state. The thing that makes me the most proud of our team is the way that we grow together in our faith through the season.
