The 2026 high school baseball season is right around the corner, and as always, excitement is building across the Bayou State. Programs from every corner of Louisiana have been hard at work this offseason—honing skills, building chemistry, and setting their sights on a return trip to Sulphur for the LHSAA State Championships. As is tradition, the state is once again loaded with talent, from seasoned veterans to rising underclassmen ready to make their mark.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll take an in-depth look at teams from every region as part of our comprehensive season preview series. These previews will lead right up to Opening Day, followed by the release of our Power 25 Rankings and the return of our always-popular Game of the Week feature.

Team Preview

The St. Martin’s Episcopal Saints enter the 2026 season with high expectations and a veteran group that’s been through plenty of battles together. Under the direction of Head Coach Bobby Ledoux, the Saints will look to build upon last year’s second-round playoff appearance with a team anchored by returning experience on the mound, strong defensive play, and leadership throughout the roster.

With several multi-sport athletes and a core group of upperclassmen who’ve started since middle school, the Saints are one of the most seasoned teams in Class 1A. Their ability to pitch and defend will keep them competitive in nearly every game, and if the offense can produce timely hits more consistently, this group could make a deep playoff push.

-Experience Across the Board: Multiple four-year starters return, providing leadership and confidence.

-Pitching Depth: The Saints bring back several proven arms, including a trio that were All-District selections last spring.

-Defensive Consistency: Infield and outfield defense are strong, with athletic & versatile defenders across the diamond.

Top Returning Players

-2027 RHP/OF Cooper Wakefield

Three-time All-District selection and 2024 District MVP. Went 5-3 with a 2.216 ERA and 49 Ks in 66.1 IP. At the plate, hit .265 with a .451 OBP, 22 H, 18 RBI, and 15 SB. A four-year starter and team leader who competes at an elite level on the mound. Uses the whole field offensively and plays the game with an unselfish mindset. Two-way starter in football.

 

-2026 LHP/OF Alex Scheuermann

Four-time All-District performer who hit .379 with a .488 OBP, 39 H, 30 RS, and 21 RBI. On the mound, the southpaw went 3-4 with 55 Ks in 34 IP. A high-spin, three-pitch mix with excellent feel and movement. Brings leadership, academic excellence (4.0+ GPA), and big-game experience to the Saints’ rotation.

 

-2026 SS Gavin DiMaggio

Two-time All-District shortstop who hit .330 with a .435 OBP, 29 H, 25 RS, and 15 SB. Athletic, sure-handed defender and catalyst at the top of the order. Multi-sport athlete and point guard for the Saints basketball team.

 

-2027 RHP/INF Bryce Helwig

All-District performer and four-year starter. Posted a .329 BA, 28 H, 26 RBI, and 11 SB, while logging 37.1 IP with 39 Ks and a 3.562 ERA. True two-way contributor who excels on both sides of the ball. Also a shooting guard on the basketball team.

-2027 C Gabe Savarese

Three-year starter behind the plate and All-District pick. Hit .291 with 1 HR and 10 RBI despite missing time due to hand surgery early in 2025. Expect his numbers to jump back up with a full, healthy season. Two-way starter in football.

-2027 UTL/RHP Kade Vinju

All-District selection and one of the Saints’ most versatile pieces. Hit .236 with 16 RBI, and went 1-1 on the mound with a 1.667 ERA in 21 IP. The team’s top bullpen arm who can fill multiple roles. Also a football and basketball starter.

-2026 UTL Sage Falterman

Five-year starter who contributed 5 2B, 13 RBI, and 8 SB in 2025. A grinder who’s poised for a breakout season in 2026.

Newcomers to Watch

-2027 Will Lyons – Transfer who adds thump to the lineup and will contribute innings on the mound.

-2027 Tyler Sandlin – Another impact transfer who brings power and experience, while also adding pitching depth.

-2029 Beau Gibbs – Talented freshman who saw varsity time as an eighth grader; possesses big upside and consistency on the mound after a strong summer.

Outlook

The 2026 Saints are built to contend. With their experienced core, deep pitching staff, and team-first mentality, they have the pieces to make noise in Class 1A this spring. Their unselfish approach and ability to execute situationally on offense will determine how far they go.

If the bats find consistency early, especially after basketball season wraps up, St. Martin’s has the talent and depth to be one of the most complete teams in their classification — and a legitimate threat to make a run to Sulphur.
