GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW
Our Week 5 Game of the Week is shaping up to be a really good one, as Teurlings Catholic travels to St. Thomas More for a District 4-4A clash. Teurlings Catholic enters Week 5 with an overall record of 13-3 and are coming off a tough series against Live Oak, where they lost two of three games from the Eagles. Meanwhile, St. Thomas More is coming off a perfect 3-0 week, which moved their season record to 11-3.
Teurlings Catholic
The reigning Select Division II State Champions enter Week 5 of the season with a strong 13-3 record. The Rebels secured a win over Berwick last Monday before facing top-ranked Live Oak in a three-game series. Teurlings Catholic took Game 1 with a 3-1 victory but dropped Games 2 and 3 on Saturday in a hard-fought battle.
Head Coach Brooks Badeaux has the program trending in the right direction, fresh off a State Title and boasting a roster filled with young talent. Leading the Rebels' pitching staff is junior LHP Evan Vincent, one of the top southpaws in the state. The Louisiana-Lafayette commit features a deceptive, "Chris Sale-like" delivery, utilizing a cross-body stride that makes him a nightmare for opposing hitters. His fastball sits in the mid-to-upper 80s, pairing effectively with a sweeping mid-70s slider. Last week, Vincent delivered a dominant complete-game performance against Live Oak, allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out nine to secure the 3-1 win. He remains undefeated at 3-0, with victories over Acadiana, Lutcher, and Live Oak.
The Rebels pitching staff starts with Vincent, but there's plenty more after him. Sophomore RHP Lincoln Guillory has been a shutdown arm out of the bullpen, tallying wins against Lafayette Christian, Brother Martin, and St. Louis Catholic, along with a save against Lutcher. Fellow sophomore RHP Isaac Boudreaux, a towering 6’4”, 195-pound righty, has one of the highest upsides on the staff, flashing a fastball that reaches the upper 80s. Junior Dylan Helms, along with seniors Jace Garber and Zan Johnson, have also provided valuable innings to the staff this spring.
Offensively, Teurlings Catholic is as dynamic as they come, capable of winning in multiple ways. Sophomore CF Kaden Chavis sets the tone atop the lineup, consistently grinding out at-bats and putting pressure on defenses with his speed and ability to drop down a bunt at any time. Switch-hitting junior SS Will Power and senior 2B Ryan Berard follow in the two and three spots, bringing experience and run production to the heart of the order. Behind the plate, seniors Brant Badeaux and Jack Ortego provide the Rebels with two strong catching options, while junior 1B Brennen Storms adds a veteran presence from last year’s championship squad.
With a balanced mix of experienced leaders and rising underclassmen, Teurlings Catholic’s offense is electric, making them a team to watch as they continue their title defense.
St. Thomas More
Under first-year Head Coach Justin Robichaux, St. Thomas More is off to an impressive start, boasting an 11-3 record as they enter Week 5. The Cougars are playing high-level baseball, picking up three big wins last week over Erath, Sam Houston, and Lafayette Christian.
The Cougars' pitching staff has been a collective effort, with multiple arms stepping up this spring. Senior RHP Riley Rowell, a Delgado Community College commit, holds a 2-2 record with one save. We saw him last spring running his fastball into the upper 80s while spinning a sharp low-to-mid 70s slider with spin rates up to 2,700 RPMs. Fellow senior RHP Talan Soileau recently secured his first win of the season in relief last Saturday against Lafayette Christian. Junior LHP Cayden Dartez and junior RHP Noah Gauthier have also been stellar. Dartez has allowed zero earned runs over his last two starts, while Gauthier owns a 3-1 record with wins over Eunice, Erath, and Southside. Sophomore RHP Brennan LeBlanc has been rock-solid as well, posting a 2-0 record with victories over Captain Shreve and Acadiana. Out of the bullpen, senior RHP Jacob Froehlich has been a reliable weapon. The Louisiana-Lafayette recruit earned his first win of the season last week, tossing two shutout innings in relief against Sam Houston.
Offensively, the Cougars are just as dangerous. Senior INF Cade Wilkerson, a former Future Gamer, is off to a scorching start, hitting just over .400 with two home runs, six doubles, two triples, and 10 stolen bases. Froehlich has also been a force with the bat, hitting .333 with a home run and 10 RBIs. Fellow seniors Andrew Carriere and Hayes Hebert have been steady contributors—Carriere is hitting .318 with 11 runs scored, while Hebert boasts a .387 average.
One of the biggest emerging names in Louisiana’s 2027 class is sophomore OF Cooper Hawkins. The 6’2”, 190-pound right-handed hitter is making a major impact in his first varsity season, with a .394 average, a team-high four home runs, and 16 RBIs. Fellow sophomore Landyn Craft, a former Jr. Future Gamer, has been the club's starting third baseman, adding a home run and 10 runs scored this spring.
Much like Teurlings Catholic, St. Thomas More fields a balanced, dynamic lineup capable of doing damage in multiple ways—whether it's hitting for power or putting pressure on defenses with speed. With depth on the mound and a well-rounded offense, the Cougars are proving to be a formidable force early in the season.
Teurlings Catholic currently sits at #1 in the LHSAA's official power ratings for Select Division II teams, while St. Thomas More sits at #2 for Select Division I schools. Both teams have aspirations and goals of making State Title runs later this spring with Teurlings Catholic looking to repeat as State Champions. One thing is for certain, high school baseball fans in the Lafayette, LA area are in for a treat this Saturday night when these two District 4-4A foes face off in what should be a thrilling game.
