PBR Spotlight Game: Brother Rice vs Divine Child
DETROIT - Birmingham Brother Rice took on Dearborn Divine Child at Comerica Park for the Catholic League A-B Division Championship. Brother Rice used a big third inning to defeat Divine Child 5-1.
These two Catholic League powers have a ton of college commits, most notably 2015’s Nick Plummer (Brother Rice /University of Kentucky), Collin Goslin (Divine Child/ Michigan State) and 2016 Karl Kauffmann (Brother Rice) committed to University of Michigan.
John Hopkins commit Josh Hejka took the mound to duel 2016 #1 ranked prospect Kauffmann.
Both Hejka and Kauffmann took no hitters with going into the 3rd inning.
In the top of the 3rd, Rice busted the game open with 5 runs.
Unsigned senior John Garry legged out an infield single and advanced to 2nd off 2015 Eastern Michigan commit Davis Feldman’s sacrifice bunt.
Divine Child decided to go for the double play intentionally walking Plummer.
2018 Reese Trahey singled to score Garry, as 2015 Hillsdale commit Steven Ring reached 1st on a free pass. Kauffmann helped his own causes smacking a 2-run single to right centerfield. 2016 Northern Kentucky commit Preston Pilat’s 2-run triple down the left field line gave Brother Rice a commanding 5-0 lead.
Divine Child added a run of their own in the bottom of the third as 2016 Shane Fugate singled on a hard grounder deflected off Kauffmann’s foot. 2016 Danny Blade smacked a liner to center field scoring Fugate.
In the end Kauffmann was too much for the Divine Child going 6 innings with 9 strikeouts surrendering only 3 hits. Brother Rice won their 4th straight Catholic League A-B division title.
