Mississippi Freshman Free Showcase: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

POPLARVILLE, MS — The Mississippi Freshman Free Showcase was held on Sunday, September 7th at Pearl River CC that featured top talent from the 2029 class. Players went through a pro-style workout with TrackMan and VALD Performance tech, while pitchers threw in a bullpen setting and were able to get data and metrics on our TrackMan unit.

Some prospects built on past showings, while others made strong first impressions.

We continue our post-event coverage with a look at some of the top performers from the event, with more breakdowns and full scouting reports coming soon.

QUICK HITS 📝

Chase Howard SS / 2B / Jackson Academy, MS / 2029

Continues to move in a really good direction with his development. Howard, a Junior Future from this past summer,  has a solid fundamental foundation in all areas. The 5-5, 142 pounder moves well with fluidity and looseness and looks to be able to slow things down when on the field. Howard has polished and synced up swing though could get into his lower half a little more. Consistently impressing our staff each time we see him.

Gavin Bramlett OF / C / Sumrall, MS / 2029

Had impressive numbers across the board on Sunday including an 93 mph exit velocity, 7.12 60 time, 2.10 pop time, and 85 mph throw from the outfield. Behind the plate he shows quick feet and transfers with upside at the position. The compact, athletic 5-7, 155 pound freshman is definitely a freshman to keep tabs on over the next couple of seasons.

Micah Butler RHP / OF / Petal, MS / 2029

Was another standout this past weekend that we look forward to watching develop. The athletic 5-9, 150 pound righty has plenty of upside using a whippy, loose arm with a fastball up to 78 mph currently, though we are pretty sure a jump in velocity is on the horizon. He also used a developing 3 pitch arsenal with solid shape to each offering.

Garner Russum LHP / 1B / Presbyterian Christian, MS / 2029

Has some current strength to him now and as overall maturity comes he has solid movement patterns that could result in him developing into a plus prospect. At the plate the 6-1,200 pounder has lots of loft to his swing which produces plenty of fly balls which could turn into plenty of home runs. With a slight adjustment to his swing plane he could be more efficient with barrels. Also has upside on the mound with a fastball that sits around 80 mph and has some feel for the strike zone.

Brennan Walker C / OF / Tishomingo County High School, MS / 2029

Showed a quick bat with some present pop (84 mph EV) and will only get better. The athletic 5-10, 165 pounder will become more consistent in time, and when that time comes he will be tough to deal with for opposing pitchers. On defense, Walker has a fairly polished look behind the plate with developing footwork, solid transfers and a strong, accurate arm. Like most Rising Stars, as the body changes over the next year or two, Walker looks to be a must follow.

Greyson Rogers C / 3B / Northwest Rankin, MS / 2029

We got our first look at Rogers this weekend and the receiver did not disappoint. Behind the plate the 5-9, 170 pound Rogers showed solid footwork with pop times as low as 1.97, and a still developing arm. In the box the right hander used the middle of the field well with a solid line drive approach and more strength on the way.

Colston Barnes RHP / OF / Mize, MS / 2029

Is another 2029 arm that should continue to gain velocity as a result of overall body maturity. The 5-10, 165 pound righty from Mize generates fastball velocities up to 80 mph currently but we expect that to rise progressively over time. Barnes also has a good feel for his breaking ball and still developing change up. He’s also another dual prospect from the 29’ class, showing upside at the plate with a solid batting practice round on Sunday with mid 80’s exit velocities and plenty of line drives in the middle of the diamond.

Wade Hill 3B / RHP / Regents School of Oxford, MS / 2029

Was another well rounded young player from our Freshman Free event. The 6-0, 170 pounder from Regents School showed defensive upside on the infield with a strong, accurate arm, while also putting together a solid batting practice round using a swing that featured a line drive pull side approach and exit velocities up to 91 mph.

Hayes Leach OF / RHP / Regents School of Oxford, MS / 2029

Started the day off with an event best 6.45 60 and showed off some next level tools the rest of the day as well. The 5-10, 15- pound Leach rattled off several line drives during his batting practice round using quick hands, a level swing path, with exit velocities up to 85 mph. He has a very comfortable look in the outfield, first step quickness, range, and an accurate arm up to 81 mph. A must follow from North Mississippi.

William Howell OF / RHP / Clinton, MS / 2029

Continues to make a name for himself in the early going of his development. The 6-0, 160 pound right hander has solid feel for three quality offerings on the mound, including a fastball that works into the mid 80's already. The shape and action of his breaking ball is next level and as he continues to add size to his frame the pitch could be a game changer for him. Look for Howell to get innings early for the Arrows this coming spring.
